Chinese

Bantienyao Kaowi

반티엔야오 카오위 Kaoyu (烤鱼) is Mandarin for 'grilled fish', the Sichuan dish of a whole grilled fish simmered at the table in spiced broth; Bantianyao (半天妖) is the name of the Chinese chain.

Compiled from 21 blog posts read in fullSources →

Bantianyao Kaoyu's Hongdae branch is on the 3rd floor of the Wise Park building by Hongik Univ. Station, sharing the building with Haidilao. It is a Chinese chain serving kaoyu: a whole freshwater fish arrives already grilled in a pan of mala, green-pepper or tomato broth, finishes on a table induction hob, and then becomes a hotpot as you add extras like mixed vegetables and mushrooms (8,800 won) or shrimp paste (8,800 won). Five visit posts give 43,000 won for mala kaoyu with ningbo fish, and 1,000 won a head buys unlimited rice, soft drinks and snacks from a self-serve bar. Two pairs paid 51,800 and 62,600 won; a family of four said they spent under 60,000. We read 30 posts dated March to October 2026; 22 describe an actual meal there.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The fish is big. Thirteen posts call the portion large and one found the fish itself smaller than expected. One pair called it a lot for two; a group of four still left some. Several posts suggest going as three or four, since you order one fish however many you are and only the add-ins scale.
  2. It is salty. Five posts say so; one noted it gets saltier the longer it cooks until it is hard to eat without rice, another that the broth is too salty to sip. Hence the repeated advice to add the 1,000-won rice bar.
  3. The fish comes out already grilled, as five posts say; you simmer it until the table hourglass (five minutes, per several posts) runs out. Ask for more broth when it reduces; one post says staff came round to check.
  4. You order on a tablet at the table, per six posts. One table had none, so that post ordered on a paper sheet and had to flag staff down for everything.

  1. Many go with a Naver reservation; seven posts booked ahead. One says same-day booking works if made three hours ahead, in 30-minute slots up to 9:30 pm. Walk-ins join a CatchTable waitlist on a tablet at the door.
  2. The room is large; eight posts say so. Posts mention group tables and a private room, partitions between tables, and window seats that feel less stuffy. One found it noisy and crowded.

Posts saying you can park6 of 21 posts

Six posts say you park in the Wise Park building garage. Whether it costs anything is unclear: one says it is paid, two say two hours are covered (one says free). Two posts written from the same template list 'no parking' in a copied info block; we did not count those.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 3 (of 21 posts read)

It is upstairs, not in a basement. Three posts describe riding the building's escalator up; one says the 4th floor, but every other post and the address say 3rd.

No one says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. That means we don't know, not that it's impossible. Posts only mention the escalator up to the 3rd floor; none mention a lift.

No one describes the toilets from experience. One post's copied info block says they are separate by gender; we did not count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Waiting depends on timing. Two posts report a wait: one at about 7:40 pm on a weekend with two parties ahead (10 to 15 minutes), another that saw the waiting seats full and booked instead. Five walked straight in (Sunday noon, 12:30, 7 to 8 pm); two of those are the same regular, who says 15 minutes at peak was the longest. One got in on a Sunday afternoon but had waited on an earlier evening visit.
  • Opinions split on muddy or fishy taste. Four posts noticed a smell: an earthy freshwater note, fishiness in some parts, a companion who tasted mud, and one about the intestines rather than the fish. Three found no fishiness, and in one post the writer was fine while a friend wasn't.
  • Heat splits too: two posts call it spicy (it builds as you eat), three say it is milder than it looks. One post says you pick from three heat levels.
  • Five posts are from repeat visitors (two by one person who says they've been over ten times); three won't return. Their reasons: once was enough, they'd rather go to Haidilao, and the Myeongdong branch is better.
  • Thirteen visit posts give the hours as noon to 11 pm, last order 10 pm, mostly in copied info blocks. One post gives 11 am alongside a wrong address; we ignored it. Seven posts list the phone as 02-6010-3366, and bookings go through Naver.
  • Some prices disagree: a September 2026 listing gives 46,000 won for the tomato and braised-mushroom kaoyu, while a late-2025 visit and a branch-info post say 43,000. We can't tell whether it rose or was miscopied. Meal totals reported: 51,800 and 62,600 won for two, mid-70,000s for three with drinks, and over 130,000 for a larger group.
  • The menu grew during 2026. From around May, posts mention silver carp as an alternative to ningbo fish (which one regular says used to be the only option); from September, sea bass and a red-pepper sauce appear. Dim sum was described as newly launched around May.
  • Some posts look templated. Two use the same phrases in the same order (the 'Haidilao of fish stew', Mekong ningbo fish, the hourglass, beef brisket as a must, skimming the mala sauce and adding it back with broth refills). Two visit posts by one writer repeat the same paragraphs, and one post stitched together from other blogs, with citations, we did not count as a visit.
