Mapo Yangji Seolleongtang

마포양지설렁탕 Yangji is beef brisket and seolleongtang is milky ox-bone soup — a Mapo seolleongtang house named for the brisket in the bowl.

Compiled from 15 blog posts read in fullSources →

Mapo Yangji Seolleongtang is an ox-bone soup house in a two-storey building at Saechang-ro 6, between Gongdeok and Mapo stations. Seolleongtang is 14,000 won, the large 18,000 won, tripe soup the same, and boiled brisket 35,000 or 45,000 won. The broth arrives unseasoned and you finish it with salt, pepper and scallion from the table, where three kinds of kimchi wait in crocks to help yourself. We read 23 posts from 14 June to 14 October 2026; 16 describe an actual meal. Six only introduce the place or copy its listing, and one, about the Ediya café on the ground floor of the same building, we set aside.

Rows without a count: 4 of 9 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The broth comes out mild. Five posts say it is not salty; four of them say it arrives unseasoned and you salt it yourself, while one found it already well seasoned. Several urge you to pile on the scallion.
  2. Five posts mention takeaway. The same details recur: two portions minimum, no single portions, and takeaway leaves out rice and noodles but adds extra broth. One long-time customer has often taken the brisket home to eat with wine.
  3. Most find the portion generous: four posts say there is plenty of meat, while one found both the bowl and the rice on the small side. One post compares the bowls and says the large, 4,000 won more, has far more meat.
  4. Five posts say neither the meat nor the tripe smells gamey; one first-time tripe eater had no trouble with it. Another enjoyed a slight funk in the tripe soup, which we left uncounted.

  1. Five posts come from repeat visitors: one family has been coming for 28 years, since the writer's father-in-law; another was first brought by a friend nearly twenty years ago; a third orders tripe soup nine times out of ten.

Parking

Posts saying you can park4 of 15 posts

Four posts parked there or describe parking first-hand: about five cars fit in front, one weekend visitor got the last space, and an attendant manages double-parked cars out front. One suggests the community centre's underground car park next door at mealtimes. Two more mention parking without a conclusion.

Getting inside

Second floor8 of 15 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 7 (of 15 posts read)

When the ground floor fills, you are sent upstairs. Eight posts mention the second floor, and three say they went up because the ground floor was full. A group of nearly fifteen was shown to a semi-private room upstairs, and another diner remembers rooms there. One post notes you reach it by stairs. Seven posts describe entering on the ground floor, so this is not a basement restaurant.

No one describes the entrance step or getting in with a wheelchair or pushchair; 'wheelchair accessible' appears only in two copied listings, which we did not count. One post says the second floor is reached by stairs, and nobody mentions a lift, which means no one wrote about it, not that there isn't one.

No post says where the toilets are or what they are like; separate men's and women's toilets appear only in copied listing text.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 21 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Only two posts talk about waiting, and they differ: one says weekday lunch brings a long line that moves fast, the other walked straight in around 2 p.m. on a weekend. Nobody gives a wait in minutes.
  • Three posts are family visits (two with a child), one with a friend, one a sports club of nearly fifteen, one a couple, and one a lunch with colleagues. No one wrote about eating alone; one post only noticed many solo diners on weekend mornings.
  • Eight posts give opening hours of 7:00 to 20:50, mostly copied from the listing; one says until 21:00 and another 'until nine'. Nobody mentions a closing day. One visitor who came after 3 p.m. was glad there was no afternoon break. The note about closing early when ingredients run out is also copied.
  • Every post agrees on 14,000 won for seolleongtang, but not on whether that is a lot: one says it is on the pricey side, two say it is worth it, and two stop short of a verdict. The 63,000 won figure for two bowls plus small brisket comes from a post that copied the listing.
  • Six posts give the phone number 02-716-8616, mostly copied from the listing. Reservations appear only in copied listing text; nobody wrote about actually booking.
  • Only one post describes the walk: straight out of Gongdeok Station exit 8 to behind the Police Mutual Aid building, close and easy to find. Another just says public transport works. The '211 m from exit 8' line is copied from the listing in several posts. Nobody came by bus.
  • The restaurant has moved; every post we read is about the current premises at Saechang-ro 6. Two regulars remember older sites, one behind the Mapo post office and one near today's Post Tower. The dates (opened in Yonggang-dong in 1974, moved to Dohwa-dong in 2006) come only from a post that pasted a press article, so we did not count them.
  • Four introduction-only posts copy the same listing: two walk through the 211 m route, the police-building landmark and the reservation, takeaway, group and high-chair icons in the same order, and two are entries in Mapo top-ten lists. We did not use their claims about parking, toilets or wheelchair access. One post found spicy paste (dadaegi) on the table and another said there was none; one diner alone found the kimchi bland.
