Sotdae sits on the third floor of the building with the Lotteria, straight out of exit 7 at Dongmyo. The sign and the customers call it 솟대 사주카페 동대문점 — Sotdae Saju Cafe, Dongdaemun. This is not a place you go to eat. Its registered trade is "other", and what actually happens here is fortune-telling: saju, sinjeom, face reading, tarot. A reading is ₩55,000 and drinks are billed separately. It runs on bookings only, one person per thirty-minute slot. One in the afternoon until nine, every day, and one post says there are no closing days. The posts we read run from December 2024 to July 2026.

What sets it apart
- Without a booking you do not get a reading. Slots are taken through Naver, one person to a thirty-minute slot. A December 2024 writer tried to book on the spot after a recommendation and found the next two weeks completely full; she set a cancellation alert and eventually got a weekday lunchtime slot. A November 2024 writer describes the weekend slots as concert-ticket hard to catch. A July 2026 post calls it booking-only, no walk-ins.
- Third floor, and there is no lift. "There's no elevator... don't panic," writes an October 2025 visitor. Two posts describe the stairwell papered with notes from people who have already been, and a line beside the door: "Right here, right now, let us be happy."
- A consulting room with a cafe bolted on. A December 2024 writer describes the drinks counter on the left as you enter, and giving your booking name to the staff to be shown to a seat. Two posts describe the seats divided by screens and timber, with big potted plants including a monstera. Payment for the reading comes at the end, on the way out, not up front.
- Writers disagree on whether a drink is compulsory. The earliest, November 2024, states flatly that the cafe requires you to order one. A December 2024 writer says ordering "did not seem to be required"; October 2025 says "you don't have to get a coffee"; December 2025 says that although it is a cafe, no drink was needed and she paid only for the reading. One early yes against three later noes looks like a rule that changed, but we cannot tell which holds now.
- The toilet is outside the shop. A December 2024 visitor notes it in passing — "there's a toilet before you go in the door" — a building toilet on the third-floor landing. Nobody says whether it is separated by sex, or what it is like inside.
- One wall is covered in celebrity autographs. A July 2026 writer describes the signatures filling it, alongside the shop's line "Right here, right now, let us be happy — Sotdae", and says a note about the comedian Shin Gi-ru having visited made the place feel properly famous.
- It is not a crowded room. A July 2026 post says the half-hour one-person slots mean no waiting; an October 2025 visitor went on a Saturday afternoon and found one customer in the slot before hers and none at all when she left. Hard to get into, quiet once you are in.
- Not the second floor but the third, and the only way up is the stairs. Out of exit 7 at Dongmyo the Lotteria is right there, with the shop's sign large on the third floor above it, as a December 2024 writer describes. One visitor says her heart nearly gave out on the climb; another describes the stairwell papered with notes from previous customers. One October 2025 post states there is no lift.

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. The words for wheelchair, pushchair, ramp and threshold appear nowhere in the six. All we know is that it is on the third floor with no lift — which we will not turn into "you cannot get in". Not recorded is not the same as not there.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 7 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Of the ten posts matched to this shop we counted six. 솟대 is also the word for the tall ritual pole villages plant at their entrance, so the name alone dragged in strangers. Two enormous near-identical posts from one blog on a single August 2026 day reel off shop and temple names around Yuseong and Oryu-dong in Daejeon, using 솟대 as one Chinese character among others; Changsin-dong, 336 Jong-ro and the word for fortune-telling cafe never appear. A third is a student's diary — "the sotdae is leaning this much", "refilled the water and stood the sotdae back up" — an actual pole in a yard. None of the three contains a line about this shop, so we dropped them. A fourth is a ten-best listicle for the Dongmyo area in which our shop is item five and nobody went, so it is out of the visited count.
- Almost nobody records eating here. All six writers are recounting their reading; only two name what they drank — one latte, one iced peppermint tea. Only the latte carries a price, ₩5,000, and one more writer says merely that "the drink was fine", without saying which. We did not divide or multiply anything to fill in the rest. That is why only two items stand in the list below — not because the place sells only two things, but because not one of the six posts copies out or photographs the drinks board. No post lists the drinks, and nobody writes down any price other than the ₩55,000 for the reading.
- Five posts agree the reading costs ₩55,000, but only one mentions a card surcharge. November 2024: "₩50,000, plus 10% if you pay by card." A month later, December 2024: "₩55,000, VAT included." The totals match, but we cannot tell whether cash still gets you ₩50,000 or whether ₩55,000 is simply the price. The October and December 2025 and July 2026 posts give ₩55,000 and say nothing about how they paid.
- Writers disagree on whether the screens keep your reading to yourself. A July 2026 post praises the wide spacing and good partitions as private. A December 2025 visitor, waiting early, says she could overhear the two readings before hers — two unrelated customers, she adds, told completely different things. Safer to assume the next table can hear you.
- No post declares a sponsorship. Four of the six say they paid their own way; two say nothing. Of those two, the July 2026 post carries a templated FAQ block — "Q. on access", "Q. on how busy it gets" — which reads like commissioned copy. We kept it in the count anyway: it records paying ₩55,000 each, what was drunk, and who was in the room. The other is a month-long diary covering several different places.
- Writers split on coming back. A December 2025 visitor booked again two weeks later and went: she had reread the pages written out for her so many times that detailed questions surfaced. A November 2024 writer sets down "would return: no — feels like there is nothing more to hear" and, on the next line, "would recommend to others: yes". The other four say nothing about their own feet, so we counted them neither way.
