Dongmyo Makete

동묘마케트 Dongmyo is the neighborhood named for the old shrine by Dongmyo-ap Station, and makete is a playful spelling of market: the room doubles as a small grocery where guests pick their own snacks, beer and wine off the shelves.

A self-service wine pub on Jongno 54-gil, tucked into an alley a short walk from exit 6 of Dongmyo-ap Station. You order food at the counter; wine, beer, snacks and cup noodles you pick yourself from the shelves and fridges, show at the counter, and pay for all at once when you leave. Water, ice and glasses are self-serve too. Pastas, tteokbokki and lasagnas run 18,000 to 21,000 won; the most-ordered dishes were the seafood butter pasta (21,000 won, ten posts) and the beef-brisket ragu tteokbokki (19,000 won, eight posts). One post paid 50,000 won and another 49,000 won for four items between two people. We read 30 posts from 31 July to 15 October 2026, set aside 3 that were about other places, and 24 describe an actual visit.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Food is optional. Three posts said you can order only drinks, and added that the snacks on the shelves can stand in as bar food.
  2. There are separate rooms tucked away at the back. Eight posts saw or sat in one; one couple sat in a corner room, and a group that booked a room said the layout was a bit of a maze. The figure of rooms for up to ten people is copied from the listing, not something anyone counted.
  3. Eight posts said the portions are large. The seafood butter pasta came up again and again for its big shrimp, squid and mussels, and the bacon cream pasta comes with two whole slabs of bacon. Four posts mentioned how thick the bacon is.
  4. Wine is chosen by the bottle from a storeroom at the back. Eighteen posts drank or picked wine and fifteen had beer. A wine blogger saw more than 50 labels, mostly American and Australian bottles at 30,000 to 50,000 won, and paid 38,000 won for a red. Several posts note non-alcoholic wine, beer and highballs. Paid corkage appears only in copied listing text.
2 more
  1. Ten of the eleven posts that discussed price said it was not expensive; one put the snack prices at convenience-store level. Some prices differ between posts: the brownie at 9,000 or 8,000 won, and wine by the glass at 6,800 won in two posts versus 4,800 won for a white in one.
  2. Close to the station but easy to miss. Eight posts walked there and called it near the station. One writer trusted the 188-meter distance and still had to pull out the map in the last alley; posts give the route as the alley to the right of Dongmyojip, behind the Season Building opposite exit 6.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

Close to the station but easy to miss. Eight posts walked there and called it near the station. One writer trusted the 188-meter distance and still had to pull out the map in the last alley; posts give the route as the alley to the right of Dongmyojip, behind the Season Building opposite exit 6.

Getting inside

In a basement1 of 24 posts
Toilet insideyes 0 · no 2 (of 24 posts read)

The floor level is unclear. The registered address says first basement, the bloggers' check-ins all say ground floor, and the one post that described it in person called it a half-basement you can see into through the windows. No one said whether you go down stairs to enter.

We don't know about steps at the entrance or wheelchair and stroller access. That doesn't mean there are none; none of the 24 visit posts mentioned it. One post described the building as a half-basement down a narrow alley.

The restroom is outside the shop: two posts said so, one adding it is right next door when you step out, and another that it was kept clean. No one said whether it is separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No post reported waiting. Two said there was no wait; three others found it nearly full: packed on a weekday evening, almost full on a weekend evening, and all but two tables taken within an hour of opening. Three posts had booked ahead through Naver.
  • Opening hours come only from copied listings. Fifteen posts agree on 17:00 to midnight Monday to Thursday and 17:00 to 01:00 Friday and Saturday. Sunday is split: ten posts say it closes at 23:00, four say midnight. Only one post gave a 23:00 last order and no regular closing day; one post alone had a 17:30 opening.
  • Four posts gave the phone number as 0507-1405-2062. One gave 070-7773-2050, but its hours also disagreed with everyone else, so we did not use it. Posts booked through Naver and Catchtable.
  • Two posts called the staff friendly; one gave service two stars out of five, pointing to the self-service setup. Another said everything is self-serve from start to finish, which can be a bit of a hassle.
  • Many of these may be promotional. Posts titled along the lines of 'Dongdaemun restaurant Dongmyo Makete' with the same hashtags cluster in September and October 2026. Only one disclosed a free meal; four said they paid their own way.
