Onjium

온지음 Onjieum Onjium reads as 'onjeonhi jieum', making something whole — one post quotes the institute's motto that past and present meet in full to build the future.

Compiled from 11 blog posts read in fullSources →

Onjium is a Korean tasting-menu restaurant on the 4th floor of the Onjium traditional culture institute at 49 Hyoja-ro, Jongno, across from the west wall of Gyeongbokgung. Head chef Cho Eun-hee and chef Park Sung-bae build a single course from old cookbooks and gentry and royal recipes, changing it roughly every two months. Since March 2026 lunch is 200,000 won and dinner 300,000 won; earlier posts give 170,000 and 250,000 won. Several diners note off-menu bites arriving between courses, and one meal ran three hours. We read 30 posts dated February 11 to October 15, 2026; 11 record an actual meal. Fifteen are lists or write-ups (Michelin, Seoul's 100 Taste picks and the like), and we set aside four that are about Arumjigi exhibitions, a pop-up, or another restaurant.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Getting a booking is the hard part. Six of the 11 diners talked about it: about two months' wait, several failed attempts, or a lucky cancellation. CatchTable is the channel they name, and one says slots vanish the moment they open.
  2. Big 4th-floor windows look down toward Gyeongbokgung. Five posts describe the view: a July 2025 diner said the green outside made it feel like eating outdoors, and a June dinner in a private room faced the mountain. An April visitor lost the view to rain.
  3. Seasoning is light. Three posts say so outright; one self-described salt lover found it a little underseasoned, and an April diner thought guests new to Korean food might find it bland.
  4. People come back. Four diners say they had been before; in February the chef remarked that one of them always came in autumn. Because the menu changes with the season, several want to return each time it turns over, and two writers in our set posted twice (February and July; May and July).
2 more
  1. Six posts praise the service, mostly the explanations of each dish's origin and the suggested order of eating. One describes staff with neatly pinned-up traditional hair; another notes two bottles were opened on request right away.
  2. The drinks list leans on a traditional-liquor pairing, but there is wine. Six diners drank wine or mention the list; one found it good but awkwardly priced and recommends the cheaper liquor pairing instead. In-house soju and citrus liquor turn up in some pairings.

Posts saying you can park1 of 11 posts

Only one diner says parking is available. List posts variously claim valet parking or just three spaces by the building wall, so we can't settle it from first-hand accounts.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 3 (of 11 posts read)
Lift to the floor2 of 11 posts

The restaurant is on the 4th floor; two posts say you check in on the ground floor and take the elevator up. Three others describe looking down from the 4th floor, so it is clearly not a basement space.

No one says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. Two mention an elevator. That means unknown, not absent.

None of the diners say where the restroom is or whether it is separated by gender. One write-up copies a Naver review tag ('clean restroom', 17 times), which we don't count.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 15 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-142 posts in one day
2026-10-122 posts in one day
2026-10-082 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices rose in March 2026. Posts through February give 170,000 won lunch and 250,000 won dinner, with the liquor pairing at 70,000 and 100,000 won; later posts give 200,000 and 300,000 won. One diner paid 420,000 won per person for dinner with pairing. Whether it's worth it splits one to one: 'quite reasonable' versus 'a real burden'.
  • Two posts (one diner, one write-up) say Onjium began as a one-table research kitchen and moved to its current 4th-floor dining room in 2018; the diner says it went from a single six-seat table to about 40 seats. Everything we read postdates the move.
  • Opening hours: four posts give Tuesday to Friday, lunch 12:00–15:00 and dinner from 18:00; two say it closes Monday, Saturday and Sunday. Dinner end time splits two to two between 22:00 and 21:00 (last order 20:00). All four copied an info box, so we can't say which is current.
  • No one queued at the door. Every diner came with a booking, so whether walk-ins are possible is unknown.
  • Only two diners say who they went with (friends). None mention family or a partner; one noticed solo guests, but that wasn't the writer's own visit.
  • No one went with children. One list post says children 10 and under aren't admitted, but no diner confirms it.
  • Five posts give the phone number 02-6952-0024. One write-up also lists 02-6272-5678, which another list gives as Mosu's number. Diners booked through CatchTable; whether phone reservations work, no one says.
  • We didn't count the 15 list and write-up posts. Two from February share a template that copies Naver review tag counts, and one write-up wrongly calls it two-starred (every other post says one star).
