Yongdengi Maeuntang

용뎅이매운탕 One dish only: a table-top pot of catfish stew with hand-torn dough, on the bank of the Geum river

Compiled from 22 blog posts read in fullSources →

Yongdengi Maeuntang cooks catfish stew in a converted house on the bank of the Geum river in Yeondong-myeon, Sejong. There is one dish on the board; you say how many you are and they choose the pot size. It arrives as a deep metal basin of red broth under catfish, water dropwort and hand-torn dough, and you boil it yourself at the table. There is terrace seating over the river, open only until three in the afternoon. Indoors you take your shoes off. Eleven in the morning to eight at night, last orders seven thirty. The name is written two ways — the sign and the menu say 용뎅이, the Naver map entry says 용댕이, and eight writers remark on it. The restaurant appeared on the television programme *Ttoganjip* in August 2026. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The terrace is half of what this place is, and it shuts at three. Sixteen posts describe the tables looking down on the river; five note the three o'clock cut-off. On a fine day everyone wants them, and three writers were sent indoors because the terrace had filled first. On a hot day the opposite happens — one writer found the terrace nearly empty, used as a holding area, while indoors she could barely taste her food for the heat. One found the terrace entrance closed off altogether.
  2. People who distrust freshwater fish use this place as a test. Twelve posts report no mud or fishiness, and five of those open by saying the writer does not normally eat river fish at all — one records herself eating on and on despite disliking fish. It is not unanimous. One writer's sharp-palated mother caught a faint earthiness in the flesh; another advises keeping the flame low to the end, because the smell creeps back as the broth cools.
  3. Indoors you leave your shoes at the door. Five posts mention the shoe rack. One clarifies that you still sit on chairs, shoeless; another found the floor warm underfoot in winter. On the terrace you keep your shoes on.

Parking

Posts saying you can park14 of 22 posts

There is a car park, fourteen people used it, and all fourteen found it hard. A steep drop down to a full lot; a slope severe enough that meeting an oncoming car would be trouble; spaces that are not level but tilted downhill; one writer wishing readers luck in "the parking mind-game". One counts about ten spaces and adds that it is nearly always full. One party gave up and parked at the café next door and walked down. Two note that from the car park you climb stone steps or a steep ramp to reach the door. Whether there is an accessible bay, nobody wrote.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 1 · no 1 (of 22 posts read)
Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 22 posts read)

Two posts mention floors and they disagree. One calls it a converted house, all on one level. The other places the terrace tables on the second floor, looking out over the river at lunchtime. Both may be true — the building stands on a slope, so the level you enter from the road need not be the level you see from the water, and the one toilet description also says you go *down* to reach it. Which it is, we do not know.

Whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in, nobody wrote. In all twenty-two posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, step and threshold never appear. Yet this is a place with a steep downhill car park and stone steps, where you remove your shoes to go indoors — writers describe all three, but none says what they mean for a wheelchair. We can neither say it works nor say it does not.

Two people looked at the toilet and wrote it down, and they do not agree. One gives directions — out past the terrace and down a level — while the other says only that it is modern. A third writes merely that you use the restaurant's toilet, which settles nothing about whether it is inside. The building sits on a slope, so what "down a level" involves, and how many steps, nobody wrote.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 7 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-08-112 posts in one day
2026-08-102 posts in one day
2026-08-072 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Nobody arrived by public transport. Twelve of the twenty-two say they drove; not one mentions a bus or a train. One writes that the location makes a car easier than transit, another states flatly that you cannot get here without one. Those who describe the approach call it a narrow country lane winding along the river; one calls the road itself hellish. Whether a bus stops anywhere near, and where, nobody wrote down.
  • Whether you queue depends on the hour: six waited, five did not. Those who waited came at two on a weekend afternoon (ten parties ahead, thirty minutes), at lunch during the Chuseok holiday (a bit over twenty minutes), and between half eleven and half twelve on a weekday. Those who did not came after two, at half three, right at opening, and at five on a Saturday. The queue runs on numbered tickets — you go inside, give your head count and take one, and one writer saw a notice that missing your call sends you to the back. Another reports they call three parties at a time. Whether you can book ahead, nobody wrote.
  • Eight of the thirty posts are out of the count, because this restaurant was on television. After the 7 August 2026 episode of *Ttoganjip*, five write-ups appeared from people who had not been — one carries the programme's watermark on every photograph, another states outright that it is a summary of the broadcast illustrated with screen grabs. Two more are round-ups of ten and of three restaurants (one of them prices a meal at ten to twenty thousand won a head; the smallest pot is thirty thousand). The last is one visit posted twice, two days apart, on two blogs by the same writer; we kept the first. The numbers on this page therefore rest on twenty-two, not thirty.
  • Something to know before bringing a child. Three posts came with children. One reports that with a single dish on the board there is nothing for a small child to eat, and that there are no high chairs. A party of four adults and four children brought packed gimbap, and ordered two pots rather than one to feel less awkward about it. What the restaurant itself says about outside food, even that post does not record. Two writers put the heat at about the level of a spicy instant noodle, and one twenty-five-month-old ate the fish happily.
  • On service and speed the writers part ways. Five call it fast — the pot lands as you sit, five minutes after ordering. But one watched a later party served first, mentioned it, and got her food with no explanation; she found the staff slow to acknowledge follow-up orders. Another found the owner brusque enough to be intimidating at first, then decided the crowd explained it. Not one of the twenty-two declares a sponsorship, and nine state outright that they paid their own way.
