Noodle house

Bongpyeong Memil Makguksu

봉평메밀막국수 A big roadside buckwheat-noodle house in Sejong's Janggun-myeon, known for an all-buckwheat noodle you can only order for two

Data as of · Published ·

Bongpyeong Memil Makguksu is a large buckwheat-noodle house on the road out to the west Sejong interchange, in Janggun-myeon. The licence is filed under a shorter name; the sign and everyone who writes about it use the longer one. A yellow sign, a stone wall, old pines, and a yard out front that doubles as the car park. Five kinds of buckwheat noodle — cold broth, spicy, perilla oil, hot, and with raw fish — alongside hot bowls of potato dumplings and perilla-seed sujebi. A tablet at every table takes the order and the payment up front. The posts we read run from March 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. You cannot order the all-buckwheat noodle alone. Two thousand won swaps any of the bowls to noodles made of buckwheat only — but the kitchen will not make it for one person. It is what the sign out front advertises, and yet of fourteen writers who mention it, three actually ate it. The others realised after ordering, missed it on the menu, or promise themselves next time. It seems easy to overlook, so come with someone and say it out loud when you order.
  2. Instead of water, a pot of warm tea arrives when you sit down. Thirteen writers went out of their way to mention it, and twelve of them name it: roasted buckwheat. one, who says they never touch the water a restaurant puts in front of them, drank a full cup. Two note it comes hot even in the middle of summer.
  3. Eight writers say the bowls are big. One wondered whether they had accidentally ordered the large; another reckons one bowl would fill a grown man with an appetite; a third was full to bursting and finished it anyway rather than waste it. Three ordered the large regardless. If you want a roll or dumplings alongside, three dishes between two is already a lot — one writer ordered exactly that and says so.
  4. Orders go in on a tablet at the table, and you pay there and then. Six writers mention it. Some like not having to flag anyone down; one tapped through the menu and only afterwards realised they had ordered the standard noodle rather than the all-buckwheat one they came for.
  5. People come back, and they come back in summer. Ten writers say they had been before — one on a third visit, one whose title counts it as a re-re-visit, one who says the office goes often. What marks this place's posts is how many tie it to the season: somewhere you have to go once the weather turns, a thing that has to be eaten every summer. Six more say they intend to return.

Parking

16 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park16 of 27 posts

Parking is the single most written-about thing here — sixteen posts, fourteen of them calling the lot large. But the yard is not the restaurant's alone: four writers say it is shared with the neighbouring places, and one adds that because of this you have to watch for the right sign on the way in. One guesses fifty to eighty cars would fit, though nobody counted. Not one writer had trouble parking.

Getting inside

Ramp at the door1 of 27 posts
Step-free access1 of 27 posts
Toilet inside1 of 27 posts

No one says what floor the restaurant is on. The photographs look like a single-storey building set behind a yard, and nobody mentions climbing stairs — but that is inference, not something we counted. One monthly diary contains the line "it has an upstairs too, and it's roomy", but the paragraph before it is about a different restaurant two provinces away, so we could not tell which place it described and did not count it.

One post in twenty-eight mentions the ramp. That writer saw it themselves: a ramp to the right of the entrance, which they say makes it easy to get in with a pushchair or a wheelchair. No one else writes about a step, a threshold, a slope, or getting to the toilet. We do not know how wide the aisles are, or whether the ramp carries all the way to the door. One person's one line is not enough to call it accessible.

Exactly one writer describes the toilet from having used it — there is one for the restaurant's own customers, they say, and soap in it. A second lists "inside, separate for men and women" in a block of facts at the top of their post, but nothing in the body suggests they went in, so we read that as copied from the listing and did not count it. Whether it is in fact split by sex, how many cubicles, whether there is an accessible one — we do not know.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Step at the entrance · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • One writer out of twenty-eight says anything about arriving without a car, and what they say is that it is awkward. No bus number, no nearest stop, no walking time — nobody wrote any of it down. The other twenty-seven either drove or never said how they got there. One puts it at about ten minutes by car from the centre of Sejong.
  • Two writers mention waiting, and they mean different things. One says that last time they wrote their name on the board and waited a good while, and that weekday lunch has a queue — though on the day they wrote about there was none. The other says there is a line out front at the height of summer, but that it had not got there yet. Neither waited that day. Two others turned up for the 10:30 opening and were surprised to find people already eating; two more found the room fairly full after the lunch hour. Nobody put a number on the wait.
  • One thing to watch in the opening hours. Nine writers say the place is closed on Mondays; two say that from April through September it runs with no closing day and no afternoon break. These do not contradict each other so much as describe a seasonal change — through the busy summer it opens Mondays too and stays open straight through. Our timetable has no column for a season, so those two lines are not in it. If you are planning a Monday between October and March, ring first (044-868-8823). As for the 15:30–17:00 break: four writers call it weekdays only, four do not say, and four say there is none at weekends or on public holidays.
  • Prices went up in the summer of 2025. Two posts from June 2025 put the cold, spicy and perilla-oil bowls at 9,000 won each; from 9 August onwards they are 10,000. The raw-fish bowl went from 12,000 to 13,000. It was still 10,000 in a post from February 2026. Five writers ate the potato-dumpling and sujebi bowls and not one of them copied down the price. The boiled-pork prices (15,000 / 20,000 / 25,000 by size) appear in a single post, and that post is from June 2025 — if it rose with the noodles, it is no longer current.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship. Three say in the title or the tags that they paid their own way; the other twenty-five say nothing about money — and saying nothing is not the same as having paid. One post of the twenty-nine we started with is not counted at all: it is a visit to the sulphur baths up the road, and this restaurant's address rode in on a block of four check-in widgets while the text never mentions noodles. Another has a half-deleted Naver review-count widget stuck in it, but it also lists everything that was ordered and how it tasted, so it stayed in.
