콩밭에 진도본점 Jindo soft-tofu house

Korean · Jindo-gun, Jindo-eup

Data as of · Published ·

Kongbate is a soft-tofu house on Namdong 1-gil in Jindo-eup, within walking distance of the island's intercity bus terminal. The registered name is the short one; the sign and the writers use the longer 콩밭에 진도본점. The menu is built on seven soft-tofu stews, each served with a stone pot of rice cooked to order, and the prices run to just two figures: ₩10,000 and ₩11,000. Two signs, one restaurant — one advertises the tofu, the other braised pollack, and inside they are a single room split by a partition. It opens at half seven or eight in the morning, which the writers keep pointing out is rare on this island. Closed Wednesdays. The posts we read run from November 2024 to August 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. There are several private rooms, and for a number of writers that is the reason they chose the place. Six posts mention them; one counts about five. Two explain the layout: the whole ground floor, four- and eight-seat tables down the middle, rooms along both sides. Two note that the county offices, the health centre and the bus terminal are close, so this is where work lunches and staff dinners land; three came as a family or booked as a group. The writer who brought a dog phoned ahead to ask, and was walked to the far end of a room, away from the door.
  2. The rice is started when you order, so there is a wait. One writer timed it at fifteen to twenty minutes; another simply notes the pots take time. What everyone gets in return is the ending: more than ten posts describe tipping the rice into a bowl and pouring hot water into the pot to loosen the crust at the bottom. The water arrives on the table or in a kettle — one writer's table never got any, used bottled water instead, and says it came out watery. The shop advertises that if you call fifteen minutes ahead it will have the food ready; not one post says they tried it.
  3. Five writers asked for more side dishes. Three counted eight or nine of them; the rolled egg, the toasted seaweed, a square of the house tofu, seasoned greens and kimchi turn up in almost every account. One writer says nobody makes you feel awkward about a refill, and that saying you like something gets you more of it. The complaints sit in the same place, though — one writer, at a tofu specialist, found the side dishes served cold and the seaweed stale-smelling, and a second also found the seaweed limp.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is haemul sundubu + yeongyang dolsotbap (해물순두부 + 영양돌솥밥) — 10 of 24 posts.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

Parking

10 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park10 of 24 posts

Ten posts write about parking and every one of them found a space — though they do not agree on where it is. Four say a lot directly in front of the shop, three say the public car park across the road, one says beside the building, and one names the public lot next to the Jeonnam hospital. Four call it free. Two add that when it fills you can leave the car in the surrounding lanes, and one shrugs that out here nobody minds a verge. Not one writer failed to park.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)

It is on the ground floor — and only one post actually says so. The registered address ends "1F," and one writer notes the shop uses the whole ground floor, which is why the room is so large. No post mentions stairs or an upper floor, and that silence should not be read as "there are no steps": nobody describes the entrance at all. Three writers do explain that the two doors on the street belong to one restaurant, but none says which to use — only that the rooms connect inside.

Nobody writes about getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across twenty-six posts the words for wheelchair, pushchair, step, threshold and ramp do not appear once. Six writers say the shop takes the whole ground floor and that the room is wide — but that describes the inside, and it is not an answer about the step at the door. Three writers brought small children, and not one of them says whether the pushchair came in or stayed outside.

Not one writer has looked at the toilet. One post has a line reading "parking, toilet: yes" and another lists "separate men's and women's" — both are the Naver listing's amenity checklist copied across, the second sitting in the same breath as "wi-fi" and "high chairs." Whether the toilet is inside the restaurant, how many stalls it has, whether it is clean: none of the twenty-six posts says. That is not a no. That is us not knowing.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Twenty-six, not thirty. Four posts are out of the count. One is an affiliate post that never says what was ordered or what it cost, still has its bold markers sitting in the text as asterisks, and gives the opening hours as "possibly closed Wednesdays" — nobody who went writes that. One is a "ten best restaurants in Jindo" listicle. One is the Naver listing copied wholesale, down to "329 visitors said the food was good." The last is a promotional post from the county's commerce foundation, which names as signature dishes two things that are not on the menu at all. Not one post declares a sponsorship; two say they paid their own way, and one was treated by relatives.
  • The hours did not disagree; they changed. Five posts from November 2024 to June 2025 all say 07:30–20:00, with a break from 15:00 to 16:30 and last orders at 19:30. Seven posts from September 2025 to June 2026 all say the kitchen now runs to 20:30, breaks from 15:00 to 17:00, and takes last orders at 20:00. Even in the later group the opening time splits between 07:30 and 08:00. Read the old timetable and you will arrive after closing — and there is no need to rush for a 19:30 last order that no longer applies. On the closing day all ten posts that mention it agree: Wednesday.
  • The prices went up too. The plain soft-tofu set is ₩9,000 in a November 2024 post and ₩10,000 in every post from May 2025 on. More than ten writers call the place good value — but the cheapest figure anyone quotes is the oldest one. And the two larger dishes, the tofu hotpot at ₩25,000–45,000 and the braised pollack at ₩36,000–60,000, are sold by size for a table to share, so they are not what one person pays.
  • Only two posts talk about waiting, and they contradict each other. One says the tables filled from about eleven on a weekend and by just past noon the wait was half an hour. The other arrived before noon to a full room and sat down at once, because the place is large. A third took the chairs outside as proof it must be good. All four writers who came on a weekday morning found it empty or nearly so — one had the room to themselves at ten. Twenty-four of the twenty-six posts say nothing about queuing at all.
  • Exactly one writer arrived without a car: five and a half hours on the coach from Seoul, off at the Jindo bus terminal, and a late lunch here on foot. Two more put "by the bus terminal" in their titles, but both drove. Two walked over from a nearby guesthouse — one measures it at two hundred metres, the other just says they walked. No post explains how to reach the shop by bus from anywhere else on the island; the rest all came by car and start with the parking.
