KYUSHU

규슈 동명본점 Kyushu Dongmyeong Shabu-shabu with an unlimited vegetable bar, in Gwangju's Dongmyeong-dong

Japanese · Dong-gu, Dongmyeong-dong

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

Kyushu's Dongmyeong flagship is a shabu-shabu house in the café lanes of Gwangju's Dongmyeong-dong — the original branch of a small local chain, reopened in mid-August 2026 after a refit. It is a free-standing building with an ochre exterior, a stone wall and a yard, which is why so many writers say it feels like Jeju or a holiday somewhere. You order in three steps — meat, broth, finish — and the meal runs barley bibimbap, hotpot, your chosen carbohydrate, omija tea. Vegetables and mushrooms are unlimited from the bar. Beyond the main room there is a separate annexe with two tables of four, seating eight. Eleven in the morning until nine at night. The posts we read run from 30 August to 27 September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. There is a room for a group. The annexe across the yard is one enclosed space with two tables of four — eight people; nineteen posts point at it, one specifying a minimum of five and a maximum of eight. The main building also has a partitioned corner off the hall. At the other end, there is a place to eat alone: a counter facing the picture window, which one writer recommends specifically for solo diners. For more than eight, phone first — no post records a larger party.
  2. A member of staff comes to the table and cooks the closing porridge for you. Six posts describe it — no risk of burning it, the seasoning lands right, you just sit there. Fourteen write about the service and not one has a complaint: three were walked through the ordering, three were steered towards a meat-and-broth pairing, one watched the bar being tidied continually, one had her pushchair carried up the steps. All fourteen, though, come from the same four weeks, so how evenly this holds we cannot say.
  3. An easy place to bring a child, except for getting in. Seven posts saw the high chairs for themselves and three brought children. The bar lets a child pick their own vegetables, and one writer's daughter got through two of the wavy fish-cake skewers that come with the set. If chilli is a problem, the doenjang half of the broth is the safe side — one party chose it for exactly that reason. One post warns the tomato-beef broth is too hot for a child. But the stone steps mean a pushchair needs a member of staff (written up separately).
  4. The meat is the only thing you pay for by weight. Vegetables, mushrooms, dough flakes, tofu pouches and rice paper are unlimited from the bar, as twenty posts record — extra meat is charged, vegetables are not, and writers repeatedly note they could go back without feeling watched. Three wrapped their food in the rice paper, though one reports being told there is no hot water for softening it, for hygiene reasons — dip it in the broth instead. Three dipping sauces come out (soy, peanut, chilli) with a card of suggested combinations on the bar. One writer, though, found it no better than any other shabu house's.

  1. The table arrives in sequence, and that slows you down. Barley bibimbap while the broth comes up, then the hotpot, then whatever you chose to finish with, then a cup of omija tea each. One writer puts it well: it doesn't all land at once, it comes in order, so you end up eating slower. The tea is not charged and seven posts mention it — sweet-sour, clean, it cuts the fat. One describes something more like hibiscus, so it may not always be omija. Another was handed a voucher for a nearby café on the way out — buy two drinks, get one free.

Parking

1 posts say you can park; 19 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park1 of 24 posts
Posts saying you cannot19 of 24 posts

There is no car park — nineteen of the twenty posts that mention parking say so. The restaurant has no spaces of its own, so everyone uses the public car park by the Pureun Maeul community centre, two or three minutes away: first hour free, then 700 won per half hour, and one writer reports no charge at all after six in the evening. The catch is that it fills — three posts found it full and ended up in the side streets. Four say kerbside and alley parking works; two note that the Daewon lot is free at weekends and on holidays. One post says simply "free parking available", which would send you looking for a car park that isn't there. Several writers preface all this by saying Dongmyeong is a hard place to park in general.

Ground floor — a free-standing building with a yard, its main room and annexe side by side. No post mentions stairs or a lift inside, though one does record the stone steps up to the door (written up separately). Nothing suggests you change levels once you are in.

There are stone steps up to the door, and a pushchair does not go up them by itself. Only one of the twenty-four posts says so, and only because she was carrying a three-month-old: "you go up the stone steps… getting the pushchair up was hard. I was struggling with it when a member of staff came out and helped." She adds that she was seated inside at a table with room to park it. Not one post mentions a wheelchair. Whether there is a ramp, how many steps there are, whether another door exists — nobody says. What is established is that staff will come and help, which is another way of saying you will not manage alone.

The toilets are inside and separated by sex — four people looked. One found them handy for being indoors; one was seated near them and notes they were clean as well as separate; one simply records the division; and one, who says she always checks, found them kept like a boutique's. Four further posts carry the line "separate men's and women's" inside a copied facilities list, and those we did not count — copied is not seen. Whether there is an accessible toilet, nobody says.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Everything we have read about this place was written inside four weeks of its reopening — read it in that light. Twenty of the twenty-four lead with the refit, and the same phrases recur almost word for word: a hundred servings a day, the master's recipe, the chef trained under a certified jang master, the holiday-resort concept. Five carry the identical offer of a free house ade for a photo review. Yet only one post declares itself sponsored ("visited through a review programme"), two say they paid, and the remaining twenty-one say nothing at all. We still counted them. Each records what was ordered and eaten, the combinations differ from post to post, two add up the bill, and one calls the porridge the sort of thing you could get anywhere. But these twenty-four are the record of four weeks when the restaurant was at its most watched, and whether it holds once the attention moves on, we cannot say.
  • Not one post says how to get here by bus or train — no route numbers, no stop names, across twenty-four posts. Three do give walking directions, and give the same ones: from the Dongmyeong-dong central library, 500 metres straight towards the community centre, then cross at the lights. One adds an alternative from the administrative centre. But those are directions from where you parked, not from a bus stop — all twenty posts that discuss parking arrived by car.
  • Only two posts talk about waiting, and they disagree. One, booked for a weekend lunch, says the peak was busy enough to queue for; another, booked for one o'clock on a weekday, walked straight in. There is somewhere to wait — three posts note chairs set out in front. What comes up far more often is booking, in eight posts: a hundred servings a day, so reserve. One quotes the reservation page itself — "even with a booking there may be a wait if the previous sitting runs long" — and notes that online booking closes three hours ahead, after which you phone.
