솔로투 담양점 Sollotu Damyangjeom Espresso bar beside the metasequoia road where coffee is served as a four-cup course
Other · Damyang-gun, Damyang-eup
Data as of · Published ·
Solo Tu Damyang is an espresso bar beside the metasequoia avenue on the edge of town. It is not a café where you pick a drink: coffee here comes as a course. You sit at the ground-floor bar while the barista pulls three espressos in front of you, then carry the final filter coffee upstairs and finish it at your own table. The basic course is ₩16,000; upgrading the closing bean makes it ₩25,000 or ₩30,000. Ten in the morning to eight at night, closed Tuesdays. The original shop is in Hwasun, with further branches in Gwangju, Yeosu and two near Seoul. The posts we read run from January 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- What this place sells alongside the coffee is the explanation. Ten posts describe the barista introducing each cup and telling you how to drink it — take it in one and roll it seven or eight times; divide it into ten sips; tilt the glass higher so the cream comes with the coffee. Those instructions are copied into the posts, which is how we counted them. Three say the talk extended to where the beans came from and why the rolling changes the taste; two mention questions being welcomed. Two writers who brought elderly parents tell the same story: the explanation was pitched so that people unused to this sort of thing were comfortable. Three note being given time to photograph before the cup is stirred, and five that the empty espresso glasses are stacked up for a picture at the end. One writer is asked at the door whether she knows what kind of shop this is.
- Six posts call it quiet; two found it busy. The quiet ones: a weekday morning with the room to themselves, a weekend with few customers, an afternoon with nobody there but two elderly guests. One contrasts it with a bakery café nearby she avoids because of the noise. The busy ones are both waits for a seat at the bar — ten minutes in one case, fifteen with a pager in the other. Nobody was turned away. It reads less like a place with a queue than one where the bar takes a fixed number at a time, and you wait for that. One writer rang on the day to ask how busy it was before setting off.
- Six posts reach for the word gallery. Vintage, antique and retro come with it: a ceiling piece one writer reads as a nod to the bamboo forest nearby, wall work that grows on you, floor lighting caught in a mirror. One assumed the building was a converted rice warehouse and decided it had been built this way. One visitor, though, complains outright: in the middle of an August heatwave there was a sheepskin rug, and she moved to a different seat rather than sit on it — it could be rolled away until winter, she suggests. A December 2025 post finds a Christmas tree up instead.
- It reads as a place people come to once. Only one writer says she has been back — she found it soon after it opened and drops in when she is in town — and she is the only one who notices that the menu has changed (a B course added) and that the cream on the third cup is not what it was. The other twenty-six either say nothing about it or read as first visits. Plans to return, on the other hand, are everywhere: six mean to try another course, to save the special one for an occasion, to bring friends. The reasons for coming overlap too — six had been at the noodle street or the bamboo garden or the metasequoia road, two had seen coffee omakase on television, three were sent by a friend.

Parking
15 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.
| Posts saying you can park | 15 of 27 posts |

Fifteen posts discuss parking and not one of them finds it short. The phrases are all of a kind — huge, ample, no need to worry — and one writer counts three separate lots, in front and on either side of the building. Another doubts you will find a café nearby with anything like it; a third found the lot so large that the way in and out confused her. Two parked at the tourist car parks next door and walked, and both still remark on the shop's own. Nobody counts the spaces.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | 18 of 27 posts |
|---|---|
| Toilet inside | 2 of 27 posts |
It uses both floors. Eighteen posts mention the upper one, and twelve of those describe climbing it themselves — when the course ends you are sent up with your last cup to sit wherever you like. The ground floor holds the bar where the course happens, plus tables for two and for groups; the floor above is where people settle. Three mention sofas up there, two a table for six or more, and four that the tables are far enough apart that you cannot hear the next conversation. Eight write about the tall windows, which look onto the metasequoia road and the fields beyond. One says you take the stairs up. Nobody says whether there is a lift.
Not one of the twenty-seven says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. The words for a step, a lip at the door, a ramp, a wheelchair, a pushchair appear nowhere. The only certainty is that the upper floor is reached by stairs — one writer says so — and nobody mentions a lift. Since the course itself happens at the ground-floor bar, it looks as though you could do it without going up; but that is us inferring from the posts, not something we have checked. Nobody brought a child; two brought elderly parents, and neither says anything about the way in.
Two writers actually saw the toilets. One reports one on each floor, and roomy; the other, on the upper floor, notes that the basin sits outside the cubicle rather than in it, which is handy when you only want to wash your hands. That is everything we know. Two further posts carry the phrase "separate men's and women's", but both have it inside a block of facilities printed beside the phone number and the hours — and one of the two says outright that she copied it from a map listing — so we have not counted them.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 28 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- The same scene recurs: someone walks in expecting a café. It does not sell iced americano, says one; she went to pick up a drink and found it was not that sort of place, says another; a third warns plainly that you will be thrown if you treat it as an ordinary café — and one reports being asked at the door whether she knew what the shop was. The harder thing to read is that whether you can buy a single cup seems to have changed. A January 2025 post states flatly that it is the course or nothing, and an April 2025 post agrees there are no single items. Yet a May 2025 writer bought a filter coffee on its own, and four posts from 2026 order an americano, a latte, a hazelnut-cream latte and a filter coffee singly. An August 2026 post copies out a board with prices for all of them. By date it looks as though the rule relaxed, but we have not confirmed it. If you are not there for the course, ring and ask.
- The closing day disagrees too, and again it looks like a change rather than a dispute. Eight posts say Tuesdays — all of them from December 2025 to August 2026 — while two say the shop never closes, and both of those are earlier, from January and April 2025. Four posts in between simply do not say. The hours themselves never move: all fifteen posts that give them say ten to eight, and not one mentions an afternoon break or a last order. If you are going on a Tuesday, ring first.
- Not one writer arrived by bus or train. Across twenty-seven posts there is no stop, no station, no walking time. What there is instead: thirty minutes by car from Gwangju in one account, the words *drive* and *just outside Gwangju* in twelve, and two writers who left the car at the tourist car parks next door and walked over. One stopped here on the road from Daegu; another drove the six minutes from the noodle street. Whether you can get here without a car, we do not know — nobody has written it down, which is not the same as it being impossible.
- Sixteen posts repeat that seventy per cent of the caffeine has been removed. We have not verified it. The claim is the shop's own, printed on the wall and at the door along with a line about being the only espresso shrine in the country and selling three hundred thousand cups a year, and sixteen writers copy it almost word for word. Five say they heard it from the barista, and those five accounts differ — four cups equal one americano, or two hundred milligrams against a chain americano's four hundred. Three describe what happened to them, and they do not agree either: one who normally suffers heartburn had none after four cups, one's caffeine-allergic friend had no reaction — but one writer, sensitive to it, drank in the afternoon and lay awake that night. If you are pregnant or have a reason to care, ask a doctor rather than a wall.
- Three posts say dogs are welcome, and all three are copying, so we have not counted them. In each it sits inside the shop's own blurb about being the country's only espresso shrine, and not one writer says they brought an animal. It does appear to be allowed. But the course keeps you at the ground-floor bar for eight to fifteen minutes, and the last cup is carried up a flight of stairs. Ring and ask.
- No post declares a sponsorship; five state that they paid, and one says a friend was buying. The other twenty-one say nothing. Three of the original thirty were taken out of the count, and here is why. Two are visits to other branches — one near Seoul, one to the original shop in Hwasun — with this branch appearing only in a list at the foot of the page. The third is promotional copy (February 2026): third person throughout, with no record of anyone drinking anything, and carrying a telephone number that matches none of the other ten posts. It does not call itself an advertisement, but it cannot be read as an account of a visit.
- Two things appear in a single post each — too few to count, but worth writing down. One is a corner of the room given over to tarot readings (April 2025): customers use it fairly often, the writer says, and the sittings seemed long and thorough. No other post mentions it, and we do not know whether it is still there. The other is strawberries and flowers brought over by the owner — the same post, the same single occasion, so do not read it as something everyone gets. Two further posts mention a ten-per-cent voucher for leaving a receipt review, and two a ten-plus-one card.
