Juknokwon Godeungeo Ssambap
죽녹원 고등어쌈밥 Mackerel braised with house-aged kimchi, near Damyang's bamboo park
Data as of · Published ·
Juknokwon Godeungeo Ssambap is a Korean restaurant in a quiet lane behind Damyang's noodle street, five minutes' walk from the Gwanbangjerim embankment. The name is the menu: house-aged kimchi and thick daikon under one whole braised mackerel per person. There is a set that adds Damyang's famous tteokgalbi and a steamed egg. Wrapping leaves and side dishes come free from a help-yourself bar. It sits in the middle of tourist country but fills with people who work in Damyang — one writer picked it by searching the county's published expense records for restaurants officials keep paying at. Nine in the morning until half past eight. The posts we read run from May 2025 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- Leaves and side dishes are free and unlimited — it is the single most written-about thing here. Twenty posts describe the bar, which is split in two: one counter for wrapping, one for banchan. But the leaves are cabbage and lettuce and nothing else — two writers call the selection varied, yet every list anyone actually records is those two, and one is openly disappointed: "cabbage and lettuce… that's it?" What they do agree on is freshness: not a wilted edge anywhere; the cabbage is sweet. The soup is on that bar too — it does not come to the table.
- A whole mackerel lands in front of each person. Eighteen posts talk about the quantity; two could not finish their fish and five took the rest home. One writer reckons there was enough for eight and says her famously large-appetite family still left food. Five posts point out the stack of takeaway boxes set out for you to pack leftovers yourself — a genuinely useful thing to know, and a sign the kitchen knows what it is sending out. Rice arrives in a big bowl for mixing, and three writers still ordered a second.
- An easy place to bring a child — seven posts saw the high chairs for themselves. They are shaped like pandas, several people photographed them, and one child made straight for one before the adults sat down. "Plenty of them"; "they have them as a matter of course". This is not a copied facilities line; these writers were looking at the things. What no post mentions is child-sized bowls or anything portioned out separately — and since the aged kimchi is sharp, what a child will actually eat here is the tteokgalbi and the steamed egg.

Parking
18 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.
| Posts saying you can park | 18 of 26 posts |
|---|
More than half the posts looked at the parking themselves. Eighteen describe it and they agree: four or five spaces at the door, and a free public car park directly behind the building (two writers say there are in fact two of them back there). Holidays are another matter: one visitor barely squeezed in among the crowds heading for the bamboo park, and another warns that the car park on the noodle-street side is easy to enter and hard to leave — park across the bridge instead. One post calls the spaces at the door cramped.

Getting there

Getting inside
Ground floor — it is in the address, and across twenty-seven posts nobody mentions stairs or a lift. One writer notes that the seating is all tables and chairs, no floor seating, which is worth knowing if getting down and up again is a problem.
Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across twenty-seven posts there is nothing about a step, a ramp, or the doorway. Four parties brought children and seven noticed the high chairs, yet nobody describes wheeling a pushchair in. The phrase "pushchairs and cases welcome" exists only in the one post that scraped the map listing wholesale. One writer does warn that the obvious-looking door is not the entrance — it's the one next to it — which suggests the way in takes finding, but what it looks like, no one says.
Nobody has looked at the toilets. Across twenty-seven posts there is no word on whether they are inside, or separate for men and women. The phrase "separate men's and women's" turns up exactly once, inside a post that pasted the map listing's options in as a raw Python list — a post that does not even say what its author ate. This is nobody wrote it down, not that there aren't any.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 27 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Only one post says how to get here without a car: thirteen minutes on foot from Damyang's express bus terminal. The other twenty-six all drove, and the distances they record — three minutes from the bamboo park, ten from Meta Provence — are driver's distances. Two writers did walk in, but both had parked nearby and strolled along the embankment first. Nobody has taken a local bus.
- It fills at lunch and empties either side of it — eight posts give the hour. Three found it nearly full on a weekday lunchtime, and one arrived during a holiday weekend to a room so packed the staff were visibly overrun. Against that: quiet at half past one on a Saturday; a table going spare at one on a Sunday as lunch wound down; and one early-evening visit that started empty and was heaving by the time she left. Nobody reports queueing outside — the only mention of a wait is second-hand, "I'd heard there's usually one." The room is large enough that there may simply never be one.
- Two writers flatly contradict each other about whether there is a private room. July 2025: "there's a room too, I just couldn't photograph it." June 2026: "no separate room, but it's still fine for a group." Both were sitting in the place looking around, and we cannot settle it. Group booking definitely exists, but the capacity differs every time it is quoted — 65, 73, 75. If you are bringing a party, phone.
- The price has gone up twice in a year — check the date on any "what a bargain" you read. The mackerel ssambap: 12,000 won a head in May–July 2025, 13,000 by that autumn, 14,000 by mid-2026. The tteokgalbi set: 19,000, then 20,000, then 21,000. Receipt photographs back it up — 26,000 for two in November 2025, 28,000 for two in February 2026. All three posts marvelling that the prices "make no sense" or "haven't caught up with inflation" were written at or before the older figures. The only grumble about value anywhere concerns the beef: good, says the writer, but not worth the extra 7,000 won.
- The aged kimchi is where people part ways. It is made in-house and braised long, and writers note it accordingly: "well fermented, a bit salty", "salty by the end", and one plainly — it was too sour for me and I couldn't eat much (her mother, at the same table, was fine). Two say wrapping it in a leaf fixes that. Four call the side dishes plain or unremarkable, though two of those read the plainness as deliberate balance against a forceful main. One writer was taken aback to find the room felt like a roadside canteen and concluded it doesn't quite work as a destination for a trip — the coolest verdict among the twenty-seven.
- One post declares itself sponsored — a July 2025 review that opens by saying the meal was provided free by the restaurant. Beyond that, three posts pass along an offer of a soft drink for writing a receipt review, and one mentions a panda keyring. Seven of the twenty-seven state that they paid their own way, three of them with a photograph of the receipt. The rest say nothing either way.
