할머니시장국수 Grandmother's Market Noodles — an anchovy-broth noodle house on Damyang's noodle street
Data as of · Published ·
The sign says Halmeoni Sijang Guksu — Grandmother's Market Noodles — and only the licence says Sijang Guksu. All thirty writers use the sign. It stands on Damyang's noodle street, a row of noodle houses along the Gwanbang stream between the bamboo garden and the old levee woods, directly in front of the street's public car park. Four posts say it is in its second generation; one says third. Two dishes carry it — anchovy noodles and cold spicy noodles — with soybean and young-radish versions added in summer. Alongside them: tea-boiled eggs, acorn jelly, and a seafood-and-spring-onion pancake. Damyang noodles, several writers explain, are the thick kind, not thin somyeon, in a strong broth. Nine in the morning to eight at night. The posts we read run from October 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- Most people eat outside. Twenty-eight posts describe the outdoor tables, and more than ten say that in decent weather there is no question about it — the stream runs past the front of the shop and there are swan boats on it. Those who went indoors always explain themselves: it was raining, it was midwinter, it was the height of summer and they went looking for the air conditioning. So the seating here follows the season — summer and winter posts describe the room, spring and autumn ones never mention it. How many tables are inside depends who you ask: six, says one; nine, says another. A regular points out that visitors often assume there is no indoor room at all.
- The shortest true thing about this place is its prices. Eighteen writers remark on them and every one is surprised downward. Five thousand won for the anchovy noodles, six for the cold spicy ones, a thousand for two eggs, six for the acorn jelly, ten for the pancake — and those five numbers do not move once between October 2025 and September 2026. One writer adds up four dishes and arrives at twenty thousand won; another reckons a family could eat for less than that. The line that recurs most often is some version of: five thousand won for a meal, in a tourist town. It is fair to add that this is the whole street's pricing — two writers note that the shops here share a menu and a price list.
- You fetch your own side dishes, from a counter outside the door. Fourteen posts describe it. Three come with the meal — soured kimchi, dressed bean sprouts, sweet pickled radish — and more is out there for the taking, along with plates, cups, cutlery, napkins and a water cooler. Two writers point out that if you are eating indoors this means going back outside, and one advises loading up properly the first time. Three confess to refilling the bean sprouts more than once, and one learned from her father to tip a heap of them into the cold noodles and eat it like jjolmyeon. You also order at a window by the entrance, or fill in a slip and hand it in, rather than from your table — and a notice asks you to tell the counter if you move seats.
- The shops on either side sell the same dishes at the same prices — so every writer has a different reason for picking this one. Two say outright that it hardly matters: same menu, same money, much the same meal. Against them stand the people who compared. One had eaten at three of them and found this broth the best seasoned; one has ordered nothing but this shop's cold noodles for ten years and says the others cannot touch it; one, burned by an earlier visit elsewhere, read the reviews carefully before choosing. And exactly one compared and came down the other way — a February 2026 writer rates this the thinnest broth on the street and tells readers to eat their noodles somewhere else, allowing that the pancake was fine. Whichever you believe, on this street it is the writers who compared who are worth reading.

Nobody records what floor it is on. Some describe the room inside — a converted house, one writer thinks, with tables set into what were rooms; six four-seat tables, says another; nine, says a third. No post mentions stairs or a lift, and since most people sit outside, many never went in at all. That the shops on this street are single-storey and in a row is visible in the photographs, but no one writes it down.
Nobody has looked at the threshold. The word wheelchair appears in none of the twenty-nine posts. The nearest thing is a mother of sixteen-month-old twins noting that the car park is right in front, so the pushchair went easily — but that is the walk to the door, not the door. One thing is worth saying, though: most of the seating is outdoors, and one writer records that when the street was refurbished the old raised platforms gave way to tables, chairs and even single seats, set on the flat. What the step into the indoor room is like, nobody says.
The lavatory is outside, not in the dining room. Two writers say so and both point to the same spot: just beside the entrance, next to the self-service counter where you refill the side dishes. One calls it easy to find. Whether it is split between men and women, how many stalls, what it is like inside — nobody says. The other twenty-seven posts never mention it.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Nobody writes about getting here without a car. In twenty-nine posts there is no bus and no train. Everyone parks and walks up — half an hour from Gwangju, they say, a drive out of the city. One writer notes you can walk over from the bamboo garden but not how long it takes. It sits in the middle of a small town and a tourist district, and still not one post mentions public transport.
- Which day it closes is not settled. Twenty-four of the twenty-nine posts do not say. Of the five that do, two say Tuesday, one says Monday, and two say it never closes. The most useful line comes from a July 2026 visitor: she was told on the day that it shuts on Tuesdays, and adds that Naver still lists it as open every day. On the hours themselves there is no disagreement at all — twenty-six posts give nine in the morning to eight at night. If you are driving any distance, ring first: 061-381-2728.
- One post declares a sponsorship and one is unclear. A December 2025 post carries `#sponsored` in its trailing hashtags — the body says nothing of it and reads like any other meal. An October 2025 post says only that she went "through a good opportunity", which we could not resolve either way. There is one more thing worth flagging: ten posts carry the same three hashtags in the same order, and several titles repeat the same three phrases verbatim. These look like posts written to a supplied set of keywords. We counted them anyway — the bodies differ, the orders and prices differ, and among them are writers who found the broth thin and the cold noodles too sweet. Not one was a copy of another.
- The posts disagree about high chairs. Three say there are some — one in September 2026 writes that they bring one out if you come with a baby, and two in July 2026 simply list them. One, in May 2026, states flatly that there are none. The three that say yes are the later ones, so it looks as though they arrived in between, but we could not confirm it. Eight posts came with children; several of those sat outside and never raised the question. One notes disposable bibs.
