길성유부 A retro snack bar by Chonnam National University's back gate, known for blowtorched inari sushi
Beer and fried chicken · Buk-gu, Yongbong-dong
Data as of · Published ·
Gilseong Yubu is a snack bar in the lane behind Chonnam National University, across from the engineering gate. The sign and the customers say Gilseong Yubu; the shop writes its own name longer. It sells five things — inari sushi, instant noodles, fried pork, blood sausage and fishcake — with the rice pouches offered plain, with tuna mayonnaise, with fried kimchi, or half and half. School desks, green-speckled plates and eighties ballads make it look like a period piece; it has in fact been open since 1999. You write your order on a slip at the table and hand it in at the counter, and fetch water, side dishes, cutlery and drinks yourself. Closed Sundays; lunch only on Saturdays. The posts we read run from September 2024 to August 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- The blowtorch is the whole point, and it is what brings people back. Sixteen writers describe the scorch on the outside of the pouches, and it is what sets this place apart: a different order of thing from ordinary inari, one says; the thing that makes an ordinary dish particular, says another; it takes the sourness out of the fried tofu, says a third. One writer who could never eat inari sushi has eaten it happily ever since. Eight of the posts are return visits — two after a gap of two years, one from a man who goes on dates there, goes when he thinks of it, goes with colleagues and went again today, and one who tried the takeaway and came in person afterwards. One dissents — in March 2026 a writer tasted no smoke at all, only old kimchi. The pouches are too big for one mouthful, and the price, four for ₩4,500 to ₩4,900, has not moved between December 2024 and June 2026.
- You do a lot of it yourself here. You write the order on a slip at the table and take it to the counter — twelve posts describe this — and fetch water, kimchi, pickled radish, plates, cutlery and drinks from a self-service counter (fifteen posts). The drinks come out of the fridge; the dips for the sausage and the fishcake sit there too. One writer notes with some satisfaction that there is no kiosk, just a biro and a bit of paper. It is not unlimited — a sign asks for one side plate each. And the side dishes are two: kimchi and pickled radish, which one writer records flatly as the sum total.
- It is small, so you wait. Eight to ten tables, a lunchtime queue, and the waiting happens on chairs outside — you cannot hold a table, and your whole party must be there before you are seated. Six writers describe a wait; the two who avoided one came at one in the afternoon and at half past five. One notes that students here queue as a matter of course. Another, walking past at lunchtime, saw people out front, thought better of it and went to the tteokbokki shop opposite. When the food runs out it shuts early — four posts say so, and one woman went several times to find the door closed or only takeaway left.

Parking
9 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

There is no car park, and nine writers say so; none of them found it easy. It is a university lane, so the kerbs are no help either — one drove, gave up halfway and walked the rest in the heat; another describes scanning the alleys with a hawk's eye; a third says it takes the parking skills you had as a student. Where to leave the car depends who you ask: the university's own paid lot, the district office lot ten or fifteen minutes away, the McDonald's five minutes off, the covered road by the district office. None of these comes from the shop. Each writer worked it out alone.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | yes 0 · no 1 (of 26 posts read) |
|---|---|
| Toilet inside | 3 of 26 posts |
Ground floor, in the lane. Only one post states it, but the address says so and neither stairs nor a lift appears anywhere in twenty-seven posts. Inside there are eight to ten tables like school desks, the floor stepping up once in the middle. Three writers note the open kitchen; two of them add that a sign forbids photographing it, and one was asked not to photograph the room at all (October 2025).
Nobody has looked at the doorway. The words wheelchair and pushchair appear in none of the twenty-seven posts. There are two things to go on. One writer says you come up a slope from the convenience store; several say the room is small — eight to ten tables — so you wait on chairs outside. And one, in April 2026, mentions a step inside: the floor is split into two levels, which she offers as part of the charm. How high that step is, and whether there is one at the door, nobody says.
The lavatory is inside — three writers say so, in August 2026, February 2025 and October 2024. The last adds that the door is "like a country door", and does not explain. Whether it is split between men and women, or how many stalls, nobody says. The other twenty-four posts never mention it.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 27 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Only three posts describe the walk. From the engineering-faculty bus stop, up the slope past the Seven-Eleven (October 2024); get off the bus at the engineering faculty (September 2024); six minutes on foot from the east gate (February 2025). Exactly one writer actually came by bus, for a lunch appointment on campus in August 2025. The other twenty-four either drove or do not say. Everyone who gives directions picks a different landmark — next to the McDonald's, up the Subway lane, between the two cafés, beside the burrito place, opposite the Chinese restaurant, across from the tteokbokki shop. Which reads as a shop you cannot see from the main road.
- You can take food away, but not leftovers. Five writers record that any dish can be ordered to go, and one boxed up untouched pouches for the children at home. But three note a sign saying leftovers cannot be packed, and one woman in April 2025 tried to take two pouches home, was told no, and forced them down instead. Outside food and drink are barred too, say two. There are other notices: everyone in your party must be present before you are served; while people are waiting, eat and go; do not move the chairs; please shut the fridge. They divide opinion. A May 2025 writer found the wall of prohibitions hard to warm to and would not recommend the place to the thin-skinned. Another writer, the same month, read the queue notice and started looking forward to the meal.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship. Eight state that they paid, and one adds a line insisting it is not an advertisement. One visit did appear on two blogs, though — two posts from 4 and 7 June 2026 recount the same Saturday, the same wife, the same television programme, the same complaint about the single egg and the same boxed-up pouches, in the same order; we counted one. And two plates went unpaid for: one writer was recognised as a returning customer and given blood sausage, another was handed fried sweet potato at the end of the meal. Neither came with a review attached.
