Gucheondong Matjip

구천동맛집 A wild-greens and mushroom restaurant at the mouth of the Gucheondong valley below Deogyusan, open from nine in the morning.

Data as of · Published ·

Gucheondong Matjip is a Korean restaurant in the row of eating houses at the mouth of the Gucheondong valley, by the visitor centre for Deogyusan National Park. Its name literally means "Gucheondong restaurant" — two writers open by saying so, because it is also what everyone types into a search box. On the register since 1999, it serves what the valley grows: wild greens, mushrooms, trout. It opens at nine, so people come for breakfast; the room is large and has a private one off it for groups. The posts we read run from January to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. The wall carries signatures and broadcast credits, and two writers looked at them: one picked out a minister and a provincial governor among the names, the other says she read the wall while waiting for her food. One adds that the restaurant was on a television programme in December 2023 for a mushroom spread, and that it holds a ministry hygiene certificate. We have not checked any of it — we count only that two people saw it on the wall.
  2. Nobody says they waited, but this is not a place with tables to spare. The writer who came early found the room quiet. The one who came for an early dinner found almost every table reserved, got the one that was free, and says she had not expected a tourist-strip restaurant to be booked out. A winter lunchtime visitor found it packed. Four of the five came early in the day, which is worth keeping in mind.
  3. The five ate five different things — soup, bibimbap, pork, raw trout, grilled deodeok — and only two dishes have more than one eater. So we have no grounds for calling anything the house dish. One writer sums it up as ordinary home cooking, and good for a row of tourist restaurants; another went in for a light breakfast and met twelve side dishes. What brings people here, on this evidence, is that it opens at nine and has room, not a particular dish.

Parking

Posts saying you can park2 of 5 posts

Two writers mention parking. One simply notes that you can leave a car in front; the other says there were several places to put one when she came, and adds on her own account that the marked bays and whether anyone charges for them need checking. Nobody says how many cars fit. This is a tourist strip where parking is likely to depend on the season and the hour, and all we have is one winter lunchtime and one autumn morning.

Getting there

Getting inside

No post says which floor it is on. Our register puts it in unit 5 of building 1; another business in the same building calls itself units 4 and 5 on the ground floor, so even the unit numbers overlap. Not one writer gives a floor. We do not count what we merely infer.

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. No writer mentions a step, a ramp or stairs. Two describe the size of the room and the private room off it, but nobody describes the doorway. We have not checked it. This is a strip of restaurants at the foot of a mountain — an easy place to invent an approach — so we leave it empty.

Nobody writes about the toilet. The word does not appear in any of the five. Whether it is inside or out in the building, whether it is separate for men and women, we do not know. That is not the same as saying there isn't one.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 7 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Twenty of the twenty-eight confirmed posts were about other restaurants, and we removed them. The name is also the search term for this whole valley, so everything came in with it: three about a duck house, four about the place next door but one, three about a freshwater-snail restaurant, two about a fried-chicken shop, and single posts about six more, plus one restaurant's own advertisement and a golf package. Of the eight that remained, three more contain no record of anyone eating and are out of the count: a five-line listing, a winter travel guide copied from the county tourism page (which names a mushroom rice soup that none of the five who actually ate here mention), and a directory of addresses and phone numbers. The numbers on this page come from five posts.
  • At least four businesses share this address. 101 Gucheondong 1-ro is ours, but also Samwol (unit 4–5 on the ground floor of building 1 — our register puts us in unit 5 of building 1), a fried-chicken franchise, and a fourth restaurant with a different phone number. All four turned up in our pool of posts. A matching address proves nothing here — the name and the number have to match too. Our unit number and Samwol's overlap, and we could not establish which is right.
  • In the evening this becomes a drinking house. A January 2026 writer found enough drinkers in the room to make eating there uncomfortable, and says so plainly. A June visitor at lunchtime noticed how many tables were grilling pork belly and thought it would be the thing to come back for with soju. If you only want to eat, the morning looks better — both breakfast visitors found the room quiet.
  • The closing time does not agree. Four posts give nine in the morning to eight at night, last orders at 19:05. The one writer who ate dinner here, in September 2026, gives ten at night, last orders at 21:05. Another from the same month gives the earlier hours but adds, unprompted, that an older review had the doors opening at 8:30 and that it is worth ringing before a breakfast visit; she could not find a closing day or a break in any official listing either. Not one of the five names a day when it shuts. If you are going early or late, ring first.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship. One says plainly that she paid; the other four say nothing about it, and saying nothing is not the same as not being sponsored. One does record that a receipt review earns you a bottle of the local rice beer (September 2026). On price there is little to go on: one writer could not get past what she paid for the trout, and one thought the stone-pot bibimbap thin on greens for the money.
