Korean

Hwanghae Sikdang

황해식당 Hwanghae is the Korean name for the Yellow Sea (and an old province), and sikdang simply means eatery; the posts never say why the house chose the name.

A hairtail (galchi) restaurant at 7682 Iljuseo-ro in Iho-dong, five to ten minutes by car from Jeju airport. Braised hairtail is 16,000 won a head with a two-portion minimum; a whole grilled hairtail is 40,000 won and grilled mackerel 15,000. It opens at 10 a.m., so many people stop in for a first or last meal on the way to or from a flight. We read 30 posts dated September 24 to October 21, 2026, and counted 12 of them as real visits; most of the rest were promotional copy repeating the same sentences. The restaurant moved to this address recently.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. There is no floor seating. Three posts say every table is a standing-height four-top, about ten of them (one post counts 11). Each table has a built-in gas burner, and you fetch your own apron from the kitchen counter. All three describe an open kitchen, and the one who went with elderly parents said the chairs made it easy for them to sit down and get up.
  2. Waits vary. Two posts waited: ten minutes in the car at a weekend lunch, and one that couldn't get in right away because the entrance was packed. Four walked straight in, on a weekday, a weekday just after noon, a morning, and a Saturday around 11:30. Three posts mention a handwritten sign by the door asking people to wait outside or in their cars because the room is small. Nobody mentions a waiting area.
  3. You can get there by bus: two posts say there's a stop right outside the door, so it works without a car. Nobody says which routes stop there.
  4. No one calls it expensive. Six posts say it's cheap: one says it's clearly cheaper than other braised-fish places, and a family of three who had the stew, grilled fish and crab said the bill came in lower than expected. Four posts also mention big portions: plenty for two, enough for three, hairtail piled up like a mountain.
2 more
  1. The stew is milder than it looks: three visitors said it looks fiery but isn't hot at all, more clean and refreshing. Three also said the fish is thick. Saltiness got one vote each way: one found the stew mild, another found the grilled mackerel over-salted.
  2. Side dishes are refilled from a self-serve bar, according to five posts. The sides that keep coming up are stir-fried anchovies, pickled garlic, seasoned perilla leaves, cabbage kimchi and seasoned laver; two posts were told the lineup changes with the season.

Parking

8 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park8 of 12 posts

Parking is available. Eight visitors parked beside or in front of the restaurant. Two say the lot next door takes 12 to 14 cars, and one found a free space even at a weekend lunch. The advice about overflow parking on nearby side streets comes from the promotional copy.

Getting inside

Toilet inside3 of 12 posts

No one says what floor the dining room is on or whether there are stairs at the entrance; only the address says ground floor.

No one says whether there's a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. That means we don't know, not that it can't.

Three posts say the restroom is inside the restaurant; none say whether it is separated by gender. Two mention air conditioning, one counting two units.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 18 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-212 posts in one day
2026-10-152 posts in one day
2026-10-142 posts in one day
2026-10-134 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The restaurant moved here recently. One post says the writer once couldn't eat there because the shop was closed for the move, and another notes a recent relocation. No post gives the old address or the date. All 30 posts we read are about the current address.
  • Opening hours: all ten visit posts agree on 10:00 to 18:40, last order at 18:00, closed Thursdays, and three saw this posted on the door. Ignore the 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., open-every-day hours in much of the promotional copy. Two posts quote the shop's own notice that even before the 18:00 last order you may not get served if there's a late rush.
  • Much of the writing is promotional copy that repeats the same lines in the same order: a spotless fish tank out front, every side dish made by the owner, a TV appearance and a celebrity regular. We didn't count those as visits. Six of the 12 visit posts also say they were paid; three of those swap the prices of the stew and the grilled fish and describe the paid crab as a free side.
  • One post says it saw a high chair, and one family ordered the grilled hairtail for the kids. Another post's high-chair checkbox was copied from a listing.
  • Three visitors went with family, one with a partner and one with friends; six drove there. No one went alone, and since the stew starts at two portions, we can't say whether a solo diner can order it.
  • Two phone numbers appear about equally often: 064-747-9737 and 0507-1318-9737. Two posts quote the shop saying it takes no reservations, and one quotes a separate mobile number, 010-5822-9737, for takeout and lost property.
  • One post says the food was slow, about 20 minutes at a Saturday lunch; two others say the table was set soon after ordering.
