Mongtan Aewol

몽탄 애월 Mongtan is the name of the Seoul straw-fire galbi house this branch comes from; Aewol is the seaside town in northwest Jeju where it stands.

Compiled from 21 blog posts read in fullSources →

Mongtan Aewol is a short-rib house tucked into the Aewol café street in northwest Jeju (56-4 Aewolbukseo-gil), the Jeju outpost of Mongtan, the Seoul restaurant famous for long lines. Straw-fire-seared udae-galbi (280 g with the bone, 37,000 won a portion) is grilled for you at the table by staff, with seokbakji fried rice, a dark soybean stew and buckwheat noodles on the side. Nearly every post describes walking down a long, dark corridor into a cave-like dining room. We read 25 posts published between 30 September and 27 October 2026; 21 are first-hand visits (the visits themselves run from April to October 2026). The other 4 retell a Kim Sook YouTube episode or sketch a day itinerary.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Staff do all the grilling — 18 of the 21 visit posts say so. They cut and grill the lean meat first, stack it on the bone, suggest the first bite without sauce, and near the end strip and grill the meat left on the bone. Two posts found that bone meat too tough to eat; three called it the best part. One table that ordered five portions said the grilling took long enough to test their patience.
  2. Waits split: 6 posts walked straight in, 5 waited. The walk-ins mostly came off-peak — around 1 pm on a weekday, mid-afternoon, 4:20 pm. Those who waited mention being number 8 in line for about an hour; a party of seven with a 7 pm booking waiting over 30 minutes because earlier diners lingered (the house sent out a caviar gimbap by way of apology); and a weekday 7:30 pm visit when the walk-in list had already closed. Another put their name down, browsed the café street and came in when a KakaoTalk message called them.
  3. Ten posts went with a reservation. Bookings open on CatchTable two weeks ahead and also via Naver; one weekday diner got a table the day before. Parties of six or more are taken by phone, and one group of seven booked that way. One post was told half the tables are held for walk-ins — hearsay, not something we can check.
  4. Six posts call it expensive. One table of three paid 134,000 won for three portions of rib, mixed noodles, fried rice and a cola; a party of seven paid 580,000 won. One post balked at 2,000 won for a bowl of rice.
4 more
  1. Portions split three to three: three posts found them generous, three found them small once the bone weight is taken out. Two diners on three portions plus a rice dish were full; five people on six portions and three sides were full too. Two posts note extra rib comes only in two-portion lots, which is why one table ordered three portions up front.
  2. Five posts found the food salty, four of them about the fried rice or the soybean stew. Four called the rib marinade sweet and four said it turns rich after a few bites — hence the many posts leaning on the frozen radish slaw and wasabi. One said the slaw arrived frozen rock-hard and never thawed enough to eat.
  3. Four posts say once was enough, and three of them compare it unfavourably with Mongtan's Gujwa branch on the east side of Jeju; one said the same dishes, side dishes and service were all better there.
  4. It is dark inside. Two posts mention the high ceiling, with star-like lights hung far overhead — one likened it to a dungeon, another found it too dim to eat comfortably. One post praised the roomy floor, wide table spacing and strong air-conditioning; another found the chairs hard. One noted lockers for bags and coats.

Posts saying you can park10 of 21 posts

There is no lot of its own. Ten posts say they parked, mostly at one of the four Kakao T Aewol Café Street lots, where the restaurant covers the first hour (one post says the parking QR is scanned at the counter when you pay). Past an hour it gets expensive — one paid 5,000 won an hour, another a few thousand won extra. Cars can't reach the door, so you walk from the lot: about 200 m, or two minutes, by two accounts.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 1 (of 21 posts read)
In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 21 posts read)

Nobody says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in — not that there is none, just that no one wrote about it. One post describes a single-storey ground-floor building; you enter through a grey door and a long dark corridor, and one post says you press a red button to open the automatic door. One family went with a baby, and one post saw plenty of high chairs.

No post says where the toilets are or whether they are separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-273 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No one wrote about getting there by bus; every post that described the trip drove and parked nearby.
  • One couple cancelled on the day and were hit with a 50,000-won fee; when they phoned, the restaurant waived it if they came at the booked time. Another post copies the rule that a no-show past 20 minutes forfeits the deposit. Twelve posts list the phone number as 064-748-9292.
  • Five posts give the rib at 37,000 won (one receipt total adds up to it) and two at 35,000 won. The split does not follow dates, so we cannot say which is older.
  • Thirteen posts list opening hours, all copied from the restaurant's own listing: twelve say 12:00–21:30 daily, one says 21:00. Nine give last orders at 20:30. One says there is no closing day; none mentions a mid-day break.
  • Several posts call it newly opened, yet one visit is dated 18 April 2026 and another was a summer-holiday trip, so we do not know when it opened. One pair of posts looks like the same blogger writing up the same visit with friends twice; we counted both, but they may be one visit. Three posts point out that the plain 'saeng-galbi' is pork, not beef.
