Cheonghae Bada Susan
청해바다수산 A ground-floor live-fish house in Gyesan where the free side dishes arrive by the tableful and most people come in autumn for salt-grilled prawns.
Data as of · Published ·
Cheonghae Bada Susan is a live-fish restaurant on the ground floor of the Risevill building, in the eating lane across from Gyeyang district office. Two posts date it to 2006, remodelled in 2017. You pick from the tank and it is cut to order; the prices are not on the menu but chalked on a board at that day's market rate. Flounder and rockfish are the standing fish, with flatfish, abalone-fed bream, yellowtail and gizzard shad coming in by season. And yet eight of the fifteen people we read ordered not fish but salt-grilled prawns — seven of those eight in September or October. An order brings steamed egg, corn and cheese on a hot plate, periwinkles and a whole grilled fish, free, which thirteen posts write about; a spicy fish stew closes the meal, discounted if you ordered fish. It is at street level, and on a good day the tables go out front. Half past two in the afternoon until around two in the morning. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- Thirteen posts write about what arrives free, which makes it the most consistently recorded thing here. Steamed egg and corn-and-cheese on a hot plate are the constants (eight posts), with periwinkles, raw carrot and cabbage, soft tofu, seaweed soup, white kimchi — and a whole grilled fish. One writer was startled: most places stop at a few small dishes, she says. Another notes that houses which still lay out a spread like this have become rare. Two confess to a bottle finished before the main thing came. They do not agree on how generous it is: an October 2025 writer says plainly it is not a grand spread, and an October 2024 writer asks whether it is not thinner than usual. The second had been before and is comparing against her own earlier table — and both were nights when only prawns were ordered. It reads as though a fish order brings more than a prawn order, but we could not confirm that. One change is on record: the grilled fish used to be saury and is now a very small butterfish, and the writer who noticed rates the saury three times better.
- The people who ate prawns and the people who ate fish came away differently, and this is the split that matters most here. Both writers who say they will not come back ate only prawns, both in October 2024. One is careful about it: the owner was kind and the outside tables pleasant, and she cannot speak for the fish — but not again for prawns (hers is the post with the over-salted heads and thirteen prawns in a small). The other liked them well enough but would not go out of her way again: she ate prawns at two more places afterwards, cheaper and plumper. The three who would come back all ate fish — one leaving the prized abalone-fed bream for next time, one saying she will return when she wants raw fish, one calling it a place she cannot stay away from. Price falls along the same line: the one writer who calls it expensive ate prawns, and the three who call it reasonable all ate fish.
- Tables go out in front, and six writers sat at them. Plenty of them, says one, and cold now but worth it before it gets colder; the weather is ordering me to eat outside, says another. All six came in cool weather — three in October 2024, one in July 2025, two in October 2025. One had expected to be forgotten out there and was not: normally you have to wave to be noticed at an outside table, she writes, and here someone counted them and laid the table at once. One post, though, says there were none — on 19 October 2024 a writer notes the whole front of the restaurant standing open but the outdoor tables gone — and a post five days later describes them laid out in numbers. Whether they came in and went out again, or go out by the day, we do not know. Two others record that the front is thrown open when the weather allows, outside tables or not.
- Somebody comes to your table to deal with the prawns — four posts describe it. When they are done, she asks whether you want the heads in butter and only then cuts them off, deliberately leaving plenty of meat on because they are going into the fryer. Another writer records the owner himself coming over to say that overcooking dries them out, and seeing to them. One notes that cotton gloves and a plastic bag arrive for the shelling — so you can peel them hot. The owner turns up at the fish tables too: two writers were walked through what was in the tank, and two ordered on his recommendation. Five posts call the owner or the staff kind, and none has a complaint about the service.

Parking

Three different stories about parking circulate here, and only one writer describes parking herself. She (July 2025) says flatly that there is nowhere convenient in this part of town and you should use a public car park — the district office lot or the one across the road — and then collect a two-hour voucher from the restaurant. The other two accounts sit in header blocks: two hours in the building's underground car park (twice), a public lot right outside at ₩2,000 an hour (once), and 120 minutes free (once, copied straight from an online listing). One of those writers labelled her own block as taken from the restaurant's online photos. Whether the underground car park and the lot across the road are the same thing, and whether two hours are free or an hour costs ₩2,000, the posts do not agree on. If you are driving, ring and ask.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | yes 0 · no 2 (of 14 posts read) |
|---|
Two posts say it is at street level, and both treat that as a point in its favour. A September 2026 writer says being on the ground floor makes it easy to drop into, and puts its regulars down to its age; a July 2026 writer says it is the only proper full-sized raw-fish house on a ground floor around here — which reads as a comment on how rare that is in this neighbourhood. The check-in address carries "Risevill, 1st floor" too. What nobody writes is whether there are steps, or what the doorway is like. There is another bar on the floor above, and a post does describe both a lift and stairs up to it — but that post is one of the ones we took out as being about somebody else's shop, so we have not counted it.
Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. Across the fifteen there is no threshold, no step, no ramp, no wheelchair, no pram. Two posts put it at street level, but what they actually say is that this makes it easy to drop into and that a proper fish house on the ground floor is rare — neither is an account of looking at the door. Ground floor and no step are not the same thing. Two note that the whole front opens in good weather, and there are tables outside, which is also not the same thing. "Yes" and "we don't know" are different; ring and ask.
Nobody has looked at the toilets. Across the fifteen there is nothing on where they are, how many, or whether they are separate. The phrase "men's and women's separate" appears twice and both times it is copied — once in a footer listing beside booking, groups, takeaway, wi-fi and 120 minutes' free parking, and once in the machine-written post we did not count, which turns that same listing into prose. Something being written in a post is not the same as somebody having seen it. Wi-fi, group bookings and local-currency payment show up only in the same place, so we have not counted those either.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 17 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Seven of the twenty-five posts have been taken out, because three restaurants share one building. On the ground floor, this place and a soybean-stew house; on the first, a drinking house called Jumin Hoegwan. Six of the seven are reviews of the upstairs bar and one of the stew house. All seven name this restaurant, and all seven name it only as a landmark — the building with the stew house and the fish place on the ground floor, next door to the fish place, upstairs from the fish place. The bar has its own phone number, its own hours (five in the evening until five in the morning) and its own menu, of clam pasta and rice-cake in rosé sauce. Counted carelessly, highballs and tteokbokki would have ended up in this restaurant's numbers. Three more were set aside as not written by anyone who came: one assembled from scraped review statistics, one machine-written (it gives the hours as four in the afternoon to three in the morning, which nobody who came here has ever written), and a month-long diary carrying twelve check-ins. Which is why the number is fifteen and not twenty-five.
- Not a place with a queue so much as a place that fills. One writer records a struggle for a table: a weekday evening in October 2024, packed, and — she adds — always like this, with prawn pans on nearly every table. She also found the tables set rather close together, while allowing that theirs may have been the worst spot. Against that, one writer found it quiet: a weekend evening in August 2025, noticeably emptier than her previous visit — oddly empty, she says, putting it down to how much else there is to go to nearby. The rest describe arriving to a full room and getting in anyway: packed but lucky, two seats left and only just, busier than expected. Nobody records actually waiting, and it reads as a place where coming late means not sitting down.
- One post covers getting here without a car, and it advises against the subway. An October 2024 writer places it in the eating lane by the district office and says plainly: the subway is awkward, take a bus. She does not say which bus, or which stop. What the others give is not minutes on foot but things you can see — across from the district office near a particular bar (twice), diagonally opposite that bar, down past the cinema and facing a chicken-ribs place, five minutes from the district office. One writer did walk here from Jakjeon station, but that was an hour-plus walk she took for exercise and is no guide to anything. Which station is nearest, and how long from it, is nowhere in the fifteen.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship, and six declare that they paid. The other nine say nothing. There is no batch of near-identical posts here and no hashtag block repeated word for word: fifteen posts by fifteen people, each with its own dish, date and complaint. Three writers did label where their header information came from — the restaurant's online photos in one case, its online menu listing in another. That courtesy is what let us keep those lines out of the count. One writer notes that she had written about the place once before, which she rarely does; that earlier post is not in our set, and all that survives of it is a link preview carrying its older hours.
