Bulnabang Agujjim
불나방 아구찜 Monkfish stir-fried dry over high heat, five minutes from Changwon's ballpark
Data as of · Published ·
Bulnabang Agujjim is a monkfish house on the ground floor opposite the police box at the mouth of Sanho market, in Masan, Changwon. It is a five-minute walk from Changwon NC Park, so a good share of its custom is people going to or coming from the baseball, while at lunch the room is mostly neighbourhood regulars. The dish it leads with is agu-bulgogi — monkfish stir-fried dry over high heat, which even in Masan few places sell. There is also the more familiar steamed agu-jjim, a crab version, a seafood version and a poached one. Rice is a separate order: plain, a single-serve stone pot, or fried at the end in what is left of the sauce. Eleven to nine, no afternoon break, closed every other Tuesday. The shop opened in 2025, though the couple who run it had another steamed-fish place in the same neighbourhood before. The posts we read run from September 2025 to August 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- Heat is the one thing these writers cannot agree on. Six say the bulgogi's default is about Shin Ramyun level — and from that same starting point one concludes it is pleasantly warm and fine for people who avoid chilli, while another watched her friend struggle. A woman who says she cannot manage Shin Ramyun ate it without trouble; a woman who eats fire noodles daily found it far milder than Shin Ramyun; a pregnant visitor who worried beforehand reports a clean heat rather than a capsaicin one, and ate it happily with rice. The bean sprouts are the safety valve — six writers say they take the edge off, and one couple ordered extra for a husband who cannot take heat. The iced dongchimi broth does the same job in five more. One thing worth knowing: the bulgogi has no mild grade — you can only go hotter. Mild exists on the steamed jjim, which runs mild, medium, hot and very hot.
- The couple who run the place draw the most consistent praise here — eighteen posts describe the service and not one of them complains. And they are not repeating a stock line: each writes about something different. Five had the fried rice cooked for them although it is officially self-serve; two asked for extra bean sprouts and were handed a pile with no charge; one arrived with a baby and was brought a high chair, a fried egg and a child's spoon unasked; one, who had come from Gwangju for a game cancelled by the heat, was given madeleines. All five of the fried-rice five note that it was a quiet hour, and one adds: don't read this and go asking. Do not expect it when the room is full.
- You have to decide about rice when you order. The stone pot is started on the spot and takes about thirteen minutes, which is why one writer was asked at the counter to choose between pot rice and fried rice before anything else. Another ordered her pot after the fish had already arrived, and waited. A row of single-serve cookers stands along one wall; four writers mention the hissing, and two say they want one for home. The roe, milt and cuttlefish add-ons also have to be asked for before cooking. Going the other way: three writers phoned their order ahead and ate the moment they sat down, because the bulgogi itself comes out already cooked — at the table you only set it over the burner and let it tighten.
- There is a room at the back, and it is the single most-mentioned feature here — thirteen posts note it. One says it seats eight, another that it holds two tables, and six say you need to book it. The main room has tables for four and for eight, and one writer reckons the outer tables can be pushed together for a party. Big bookings really do happen: someone visiting in November 2025 found nearly every table in the house reserved for a party of forty that evening. Nobody wrote from inside the room, though — all thirteen ate in the main room and noticed it on the way past.
- The walls carry autographs from NC Dinos players — ten posts mention them, and one picks out Chun Jae-hwan by name. "Near a ballpark, signatures on the wall usually mean the food is good," writes another. Away fans really do come: one found the place full at three on a weekday afternoon, "mostly Doosan and Samsung shirts"; one came down from Seoul and back in a day for this and nothing else; one came from Gwangju, lost her game to a heat cancellation and ate here instead. Only one post mentions queuing, though: on a game day you need to be in before noon or wait twenty to thirty minutes (June 2026). The other twenty-seven say nothing about waiting at all.
- Instead of water they bring a metal kettle of warm barley tea — seven posts mention it, and two remark on the kettle itself, the kind you expect makgeolli in. Winter visitors were especially glad of it. Its counterpart is dongchimi with ice still floating in it: ten posts mention it, and five use it as a mouthful of relief when the chilli builds. One writer's mother declared it the best thing on the table, loudly enough that the room turned. The side dishes change by the day — acorn jelly, sprouts, mushrooms, bellflower root, seaweed stem, laver, macaroni salad, braised quail eggs, potatoes — and one writer notices that none of them contains chilli powder, which makes sense against the main dish. They will bring more if you ask; three writers did.
- "Ten years' experience" and "brand new" both appear, and both are true. Eleven posts carry the line about a young couple with ten years behind them; several others call the place brand new, just opened, obviously recent. A November 2025 post joins the two: the owner used to run Sanho Chogajip beside the Savoy Hotel — the shop is new, the steaming is more than ten years old. Another guesses the business was handed down from a mother; two date it to 2015. So: this shop in this spot opened in 2025, and the decade belongs to the couple, not the address. The oldest post we hold is from September 2025, and it too says the place looked newly opened.

Parking

Parking comes down to whether you get one of the one or two spaces in front. Six posts say those spaces exist; five say there is no car park at all. They are describing the same thing from different sides — no dedicated lot, room for a car or two outside. Those who did park in front had either arrived at opening or come late. Otherwise it is the Sanho market public car park — two or three of them, between a one-minute walk and 200 metres, and two writers give addresses (6 Sanhobuk 11-gil; 45 Sanhobuk 15-gil). One paid ₩700 for an hour in a light car, another ₩1,300 for the meal. A November 2025 post says she talked the owner into ₩1,000 per table towards the public car park — no later post mentions it, so whether it still stands we do not know. One post lists the hours when the kerbside outside is free to use: weekdays 11am–2pm and after 5pm, all day at weekends.

Nobody has written about floors or stairs. The word "stairs" appears in none of the twenty-eight posts; "second floor" appears twice, both times about a different shop in a different city, inside travel diaries that cover many places at once. The licence gives the address as ground floor, 2 Sanhobuk 15-gil, and six writers place it at street level in the market lane opposite the police box. So the ground floor is what our records say, and no visitor has told us whether the way to the door is flat.
Nobody has written about a step at the door or a ramp. In all twenty-eight posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, ramp and threshold never appear. Whether there is a lip at the entrance, how wide the door is, whether a chair fits between the tables — we do not know. Four writers call the room spacious and one says the tables are not crowded together, but that is comfort once seated, not access on the way in. Two visitors brought babies and both were given high chairs — neither says what happened to the pushchair.
Only two writers describe the toilet from having seen it. Both say the same two things: it is indoors, and it is clean — one likes not having to go outside, the other says exactly that is what she looks for. A third post carries the line "separate men's and women's," but it sits in a block with "groups welcome, takeaway, reservations," copied off the listing page, so we have not counted it. Whether it is in fact separated, how many stalls, whether it is cramped — nobody has confirmed. Nor is there any mention of a baby-changing table, not even from the two who came with infants.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know
- Not one line about getting here on public transport. Across twenty-eight posts there is no bus number, no stop, no train — the only buses are the coaches that brought people down from Seoul and Gwangju. Every distance given is a five-minute walk from Changwon NC Park (six posts); the rest are directions for people who already know the area: opposite the police box, at the mouth of Sanho market. Driving does appear — through the Palyong tunnel from central Changwon, quick enough. So whether a bus runs here from the station, and how long it takes, we do not know. That you can walk it from the ballpark, several people have confirmed.
- They disagree about how big it is. Four call it roomy: "pretty large and clean, not packed in too tightly"; "bigger inside than I expected"; "it looked cosy passing by, but there is real space in there." Two call it small: "six or seven tables at most"; "not big, so if there's a queue you'll wait twenty or thirty minutes." The two who actually counted tables agree — six, and six or seven — so the room has not changed; what they are measuring against has. The four were talking about elbow room and the back room; the two were talking about how many parties fit on a game day. Assume it fills quickly at lunch when there is baseball.
- Nine writers say they will be back; not one of them has come back and written about it. The twenty-eight posts are twenty-eight different people, each writing once, and twelve of them say this was the first time they had ever eaten agu-bulgogi anywhere. For a shop that opened in 2025 that is only to be expected — but it also means nobody has yet told us whether the second visit is as good as the first. One post relays a companion's memory of an earlier visit, of the jjim and the poached version; that is his report, not hers.
- These prices are for a dish, not for a person. A small agu-bulgogi at ₩30,000 feeds two — four couples had one and left some — the medium at ₩40,000 feeds three, the large is ₩50,000. The steamed jjim starts at ₩25,000. Rice is extra on top: ₩1,000 plain, ₩2,000 for the stone pot, ₩2,000 for the fried rice, and none comes with the bulgogi. Two people with a small bulgogi, two pots and a fried rice pay ₩36,000. Only one post copied the whole board (April 2026); everyone else recorded what they themselves ordered, and from September 2025 to August 2026 not one of those figures contradicts another. Nobody calls it expensive; seven use the word value, two of them by comparison with Seoul. No one mentions the regional currency card, and one notes that Zeropay works.
- The posts arrived in two clusters: four over five days in late November 2025, nine over ten days from 24 January 2026. Thirteen of the twenty-eight sit inside those two windows, and within them three sentences recur almost word for word — a young couple with ten years' experience, no MSG in any dish, a sauce the owner developed himself. Eleven posts carry the decade, eight the MSG line. This is copy the shop supplied. Yet only one of the thirteen declares a sponsorship. Four others state they paid their own way; the remaining twenty-three say nothing about money at all, and saying nothing is not the same as saying it was not sponsored. We did not drop the thirteen: what each of them ate, paid, ordered and brought differs post by post — a ₩6,000 milt charge on a receipt, ₩700 for an hour's parking in a light car, an order placed at the hot grade, a party of forty booked that night — and that is not a template. But we have kept those three sentences out of our counts. The MSG and the decade are things the shop says, not things we checked.
