Smilda is a small hanok cafe on a back lane in Hapcheon town, within walking distance of the old Wanghu market. There is a garden and outdoor tables in the yard; inside, under exposed rafters, floor seats on the wooden verandah sit alongside ordinary tables. The signatures are made with rice — a rice latte, rice financiers — and in summer, shaved-milk ice with red bean. One corner of the counter is a craft shop selling mother-of-pearl and traditional knotwork, with occasional one-day classes; six posts say the owner makes the pieces herself. Eleven to six, closed Mondays. The posts we read run from August 2025 to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- It is small. Eight posts say so and none says otherwise: not many tables, seats looking a little short, not a big cafe. Two could not photograph the room because every seat was taken, and one advises going early. Three think the yard makes up for it — with the back garden, they say, there is room enough.
- You can sit outside — fourteen posts mention it. Tables on the lawn, large parasols over each of them in one account, more seats in the back garden in two. But in summer nobody did: four writers went indoors because of the heat, and all four end the same way, saying they would come back when it cools. Only one post, written in autumn, reports seeing people actually out there.
- There are floor seats — nine posts mention them: round low tables and cushions on the verandah in front of the big window, and several call it the best seat in the house. One got lucky and landed there; another says she will aim for it next time. Three single out the yellow lacquered table inlaid with mother-of-pearl. One writer dissents: lovely for the atmosphere, hard to sit at for long.
- Seven posts single out the seat by the big window onto the garden. One whole wall is glass, they say, and the view lands like a framed picture — two use almost that exact phrase. Three admit they were angling for that seat to take photographs.
- No post calls it expensive. The two that mention price both go the other way — very cheap, one says; good value at 3,500 won for an americano, says the other. That 3,500 is from August 2025, though: a post two months later puts the same drink at 4,000.
- Three posts talk about the people behind the counter and all three are warm about it: one asked who makes the inlay and was told it is the owner's sister; one was told, unprompted, that the fig compote inside the shaved ice can be refilled; one was handed a twice-baked financier for nothing. No post complains.
- Two posts say they came back; three say they mean to. The other twenty-two say nothing about their own return, so we left it blank. One of the two who returned noticed what had changed — more of the inlay work on sale than last time.

Seventeen posts talk about parking, and here that is not copied boilerplate — seven of them parked their own car and describe the spot. One counts about four places in the front yard and says they double-park when it fills; another points out that the rightmost slot is not a slot at all but the way through. How many fit is where they disagree: three to four, four, four to five, five, eight with double-parking — six posts, six answers. Four say there is more space across the road, though they call it different things: a temporary lot, a wide empty plot, a public car park nearby.

Not one of the twenty-seven posts mentions a step at the door, a ramp, or a wheelchair. Nine describe the hanok, the yard you cross to reach it, the floor seats you take your shoes off for — but nobody describes the entrance itself. That is not an absence of steps; it is an absence of information. If you are coming with a wheelchair or a pushchair, call ahead.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 28 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Not one post says which floor it is on, or whether there are stairs. Twenty-seven of them describe the tiled roof, the rafters, the yard and the verandah; none mentions an upstairs or a basement — but none rules one out either. It reads like a converted hanok you walk into straight from the yard, and that reading is ours, not anybody's report.
- Only two writers used the toilet and said so. Both found it clean; one of them notes separate men's and women's. Two more posts list "separate toilets" among the bullet points at the top — we did not count those, because they are lifted from the platform's facility list, not seen. Nothing at all about an accessible toilet.
- Wi-Fi, dogs and contactless payment appear only in copied lists — two posts carry the same string of bullet points verbatim, and in the body of neither does anyone use the Wi-Fi or bring a dog. One writer came to work on a laptop, but all she says is that she skipped the floor seats; she never mentions the connection. We counted none of it.
- None of the twenty-seven arrived by public transport. Seven drove and parked; the two who walked had just eaten at a restaurant nearby. One post does say the intercity bus terminal is close enough to come without a car — but that post records no order and was excluded from the denominator, so we did not count it.
- No post describes queueing. What two do describe is arriving to a full room: one could not photograph the inside, the other could not have the floor seat she wanted because someone was already in it. One writer arrived at half past eleven to find customers already there; another was the first of the day.
- The last-order time does not agree. Sixteen posts give the same hours — eleven to six, closed Mondays — with no contradiction at all. But eight put last orders at five o'clock and two at half past five, and the two are from February and September 2026, so the dates do not sort it out either. If closing is six, five is a full hour before. Going late, work from five.
- It has closed for a long stretch in winter. One October 2025 post says the writer happened to catch the last weekend of the year — shut from 29 October to 31 December for refitting. Two months. Whether that happens every year we cannot tell from a single post, and the 2026 posts say nothing about it. Another writer, also in 2025, found it open through the Chuseok holiday. If you are going in winter, check first.
- The seasonal menu turns over, and we cannot say what is on now. A single year of posts turns up four limited drinks alone: a pink salted-caramel coffee for the pink-muhly season in October 2025, Jeju green tangerine that autumn, matcha and strawberry in spring 2026, green figs in September 2026. Shaved ice appears in summer and not in winter. Prices are the same story: only four of the twenty-seven posts give any, and all four were written between August and October 2025. Not one post from 2026 quotes a price.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship, and five state outright that they paid. Two things are worth recording anyway. First, two of the posts are from Hapcheon county's own travel blog — one of them had no order in it and was dropped from the denominator. Second, four are write-ups of trips taken under the county's half-price travel scheme, which refunds half the cost; the shop gave them nothing, but public money is inside the trip. The remaining sixteen say nothing either way.
- Three of the thirty were dropped, which leaves twenty-seven. All three introduce the cafe and none of them says what was eaten: one reprints a press piece on the county's six recommended shaved-ice cafes and staples an affiliate coupon to the end; one is a three-city flower-viewing round-up where Smilda gets two sentences; one has no order at all and contradicts itself on parking inside a single post, first saying there is no lot of its own and later that there is a small one out front. The twenty-seven that remain are twenty-seven different people — no one wrote twice.
- One post does not square with the hours. Writing in February 2026, a visitor says they set off late and reached Hapcheon after seven in the evening, found nothing open, searched, and went to Smilda — and the same post lists the hours as eleven to six. Whether the memory is wrong or the cafe stayed open that night, we cannot tell. The hours line in that post matches the other fifteen, so we left it standing and note the discrepancy here.
- Nobody says whether the mother-of-pearl class has to be booked. Five posts mention that it runs; all five only looked. One does advise checking ahead because it may need a reservation — but that post is one of the three we dropped. We have no price and no schedule.
