Pungnyeon Galbi

풍년갈비 A charcoal grill house at the mouth of Jeongja market in Suwon, known for thick-cut marinated pork collar it sells as steak galbi.

Compiled from 28 blog posts read in fullSources →

Pungnyeon Galbi is a charcoal grill house at the mouth of Jeongja market in Suwon. Its名 dish, the 'steak dwaeji-galbi', is not rib at all — pork collar cut thick as a steak, scored deep and steeped in the house marinade, ₩17,000 for 250g. There is beef short-rib meat too, marinated or plain, at several times the price. They bring the charcoal and the grate; the cooking is yours. Side dishes are refilled as often as you like from a self-serve counter, and the rice and doenjang stew come one to a person. There is a free car park out front with no time limit, and private rooms at the back. Open every day, eleven in the morning to ten at night, with no closing day. The posts we read run from December 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. The 'steak dwaeji-galbi' is not rib. It is pork collar — one writer says shoulder-collar too — cut steak-thick, scored all over and left in the marinade. As one puts it, the cut is collar and you would take it for rib if nobody told you; another is simply glad there is no bone to work around. Seventeen writers remark on the thickness and not one calls it thin. Two servings arrive as two or three heavy slabs, browned whole and then cut down on the grill. If what you want is meat off a bone, this is not that — one writer makes the distinction exactly: people who love the rib itself may be disappointed, people who love the marinade will not be.
  2. The rice and the doenjang stew come one to a person, ₩3,000 a set. One writer notes that most grill houses give a table a single stew and this one does not; another confirms that ordering a second bowl of rice brings a second stew. That price went up — every post up to early June 2026 says ₩2,000 and every post from 23 June on says ₩3,000, with nothing in between. They all still call it cheap. The meat did not move at all: ₩17,000 for 250g appears twelve times between January and September 2026, always the same.
  3. You help yourself to the side dishes, as often as you like. Twenty-six posts mention the counter and none has a grumble about it. What is on it shifts a little day to day — one writer says outright that the setting changes daily. Spring onion salad, pickled onion, soft tofu, dressed lettuce, salad and pickles turn up in nearly every post; candied sweet potato, glass-noodle salad, japchae, dongchimi and a seaweed pancake in only a few. What people go back for is not more meat but more onion and more spring onion — one writer works out mid-meal why everyone else kept getting up. One singles out the yuzu in the pickled onion. Two note that anything not on the counter will be brought if you ask.
  4. There are private rooms with doors, at the back. Thirteen posts mention them and one counts two. Two writers saw them in use, with a work party already going inside. Even the people who did not go in agree the main room is roomy — twenty-one of them. Four-tops are pushed together in pairs, so six or seven sit at one table, and there are separate fours by the window. Not one post says whether the rooms must be booked, or whether there is a minimum number of people.
2 more
  1. Several writers say it suits children. Two note that there are plenty of high chairs, and three brought a child. The reason they give is the marinade: it is sweet rather than hot, so there is nothing on the table a child cannot eat. One says her baby normally refuses grilled meat as too tough and kept taking this. Nobody writes about a nappy-changing table. Read this together with the note on the charcoal below — two writers found the underside of the table very hot.
  2. It takes the regional currency and government relief vouchers. Three writers mention it, each naming a different scheme: the Gyeonggi local currency in September 2026, a fuel-price relief voucher in July, and a provincial cashback promotion in March. Promotions come and go and we do not know which of these still runs — but across three separate months, this is a shop that keeps signing up for them.

Posts saying you can park26 of 28 posts

The car park is why people choose this place. Twenty-six of the twenty-eight posts talk about it and not one of them has a complaint. The point is where it stands: writers describe the parking around Jeongja market as a daily war, with even the public lot inside the market full — and this shop has its own yard at its front door. They write it as people who parked in it: room for ten cars easily; a private lot rather than a shared building one, with no time limit; two cars in one party, no trouble. It costs nothing. One writer watched someone who was not even eating there ask to leave a car, and the owner said yes. Cars go in from the front only — one post warns that you can walk in from the back but not drive in, and another got lost because the satnav sent her somewhere else.

Getting inside

Separate restrooms1 of 28 posts

Exactly one writer puts the shop on the ground floor in her own words, in a caption under the outside of the building (March 2026). Another says it is a free-standing building of its own; a third, explaining the parking, insists it is the surface lot and not the supermarket basement — which is about the car park, not the shop. Not one post describes going up or down stairs, or using a lift. Nobody writes about how you get from the car park to the door.

Nobody writes about getting in with wheels. Across twenty-eight posts the words wheelchair, pushchair and ramp do not appear. One writer does record a step inside — she found a change of floor level with a warning marking on it, and supposes it is left over from when that part of the room was a shoes-off platform (February 2026). She adds that you now walk straight in with your shoes on, which reads as a raised seating area converted to tables with the step still there. Where it is, how high it is, and whether there is a way round it, she does not say. Whether there is a step at the door itself, nobody says at all. This is not 'there is no step'; it is 'we do not know'. One mother writes that these details matter when you are carrying a child rather than pushing one — but she is talking about the car park, not the threshold.

Two writers checked the lavatory themselves. One makes a point of it — she looks every time now — and reports that it is inside the restaurant rather than shared with the building, clean, and separated for men and women (July 2026). The other simply notes that it is indoors and very clean (January 2026). Two further posts do say 'separate men's and women's', but only as one line in a block copied wholesale off Naver's facilities list, along with booking, groups, wi-fi and parking — so we did not count them. Copying is not seeing. Whether there is an accessible lavatory, none of the twenty-eight says.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Seven of the twenty-eight declared a sponsorship — one in four. Where they declare it varies. Six do it with a bare hashtag in the caption at the very bottom, so you have to scroll to the end to find it; only one writes it as a sentence, saying the meal was provided and the review honest anyway. Two others state that they paid, and the remaining nineteen say nothing either way. We did not throw the sponsored posts out — all seven say what they ordered, how many servings and what it cost, and none of their prices or portions contradicts the twenty-one others. Still, read the praise knowing that a quarter of it comes from people who did not pay. One of them adds that it was sponsored and she ordered more anyway.
  • Not one writer says they queued. The word does not appear in any of the twenty-eight, and nobody describes a waiting list or a bench by the door. It is not that the place is empty — around ten posts describe a full room: customers coming in without a break on a Sunday evening, the place packed well after the lunch hour, the hall busy at seven on a weekday with a work party already in the back room. Nobody was turned away or made to wait. The size of the hall and the separate rooms may be the reason, but we have not confirmed that. Two writers booked ahead and found the table laid when they arrived.
  • Exactly one writer came without a car. Of twenty-eight posts, one mentions public transport at all — that the Jeongja market bus stop is close and the place is easy to reach that way — and even she does not say she took a bus. The phrase 'Hwaseo Station restaurant' appears in more than ten of the titles, and not one person walked from Hwaseo Station. The only walking anybody describes is from Starfield Suwon: two posts put it at fifteen minutes. Everyone else drove or lives nearby. How far it is from a station, and which buses stop where, we do not know.
  • The charcoal box under the table gets very hot. Two writers mention it independently: one warns to mind your legs once the charcoal goes in, the other eventually asked for the fire to be taken away and says the rest of the meal was far more comfortable. They will take it out if you ask. The heat itself gets good reviews otherwise — six writers say the gap between coals and grate is wide enough that even marinated meat does not burn, and four describe staff laying a second grate over the first so the cooked pieces stay warm. Two pass on the tip that the flame is strong and finished meat belongs at the edge.
  • We know nothing about the lunch dishes. The board lists a short-rib soup at ₩16,000, spicy beef soup and bulgogi hotpot at ₩10,000, kimchi stew and brisket doenjang at ₩9,000, a hotpot rice set, cold soybean noodles and naengmyeon — and four writers remark on how many office workers and locals come at lunch for these alone, without lighting a grill. One passes on that the lunch specials are cheap. But all twenty-eight of the people we read came to grill meat, and not one of them ate any of it. The prices are read off photographs of the board; the food itself we cannot describe.
  • The steamed egg is sometimes ordered and sometimes given. Of the eleven who ate it, six got it free and five paid. Even the ones who got it free are unsure what it was: one says she does not know whether it is part of the table setting, one assumes it is, one calls it a service dish. None of them can say what decides it, and neither can we. It was ₩4,000 in February 2026 and ₩5,000 on the September board. Do not count on it; be pleased if it comes.
