Tonggolbaengi Sanghoe

통골뱅이상회 Tong-golbaengi means whole whelks cooked in the shell (as opposed to canned whelk meat), and sanghoe is an old word for a trading house.

Compiled from 26 blog posts read in fullSources →

A whole-whelk drinking spot on the ground floor of the Bujaro Tower in Okjeong's central shopping area, Yangju. Whelks and mussels simmer in a big pot by the door; they're ladled into a tin pan that you bring back to the boil on a burner at your table, and when it's finished the kitchen cooks ramyeon in the leftover broth. Most posts give the hours as 6 pm to 3 am. On the March 2026 menu a medium whelk stew is 31,000 won and sets run 35,000–49,000 won; in spring 2025 they were 25,000 won and 25,000–38,000 won. We read 30 posts from March 2025 to August 2026, 26 of them from actual visits.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The upstairs window seats come up again and again: 7 posts mention windows thrown open or sitting by them, from a cool breeze upstairs to watching the rain from a window table.
  2. 9 posts mention outdoor tables in front of the entrance — eight from May–June 2025 and one from August 2026. In good weather the front is left open, so the breeze reaches indoor tables too.
  3. Food comes fast: 7 posts said so, some timing it at under two or under five minutes, because the stew is ladled straight from a pot that is already simmering.
  4. 12 posts said there was no fishy smell, for both the whelks and the mussels; one noted that restaurant mussels often taste frozen and these didn't. Claims that the shellfish come from Yeosu or are washed seven times were repeated from the owner, so we don't rely on them.
3 more
  1. 12 posts called the portions generous; one set was enough to fill two, and one post said it looked small at first but turned out plenty for two.
  2. 8 posts described the owner as friendly — explaining the eating order and telling diners to mix the noodles one bundle at a time. Several posts list free extras: fish cake, braised cockles and dried pollack, potato salad, white whelks, marinated mussels, potato pancake.
  3. 7 posts called it good value and none called it expensive — but 6 of those 7 were written in April–May 2025, before prices went up.

Posts saying you can park4 of 26 posts

4 posts parked in the building's underground car park; one waited about five minutes for a space, another double-parked and had to move, and one said parking is free if you give the owner your plate number. One post's copied info block says no parking, which contradicts the rest.

Getting inside

Second floor21 of 26 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 6 (of 26 posts read)

There is an upstairs room reached by stairs at the back of the ground floor; 21 visit posts mention it, calling it attic-like or a hideout. One said the ceiling up there is a little low. Table counts differ: about four downstairs and four upstairs in one post, three or four upstairs in another, around fifteen in total in a third.

Nobody mentioned a step at the entrance or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller. The shop is on the ground floor; the upstairs seating is reached by stairs.

No one described the toilets from experience. Three copied info blocks say they are separated by gender, one of them noting they are in the building rather than the shop.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices have risen. Spring 2025 menus show A-set 25,000, B-set 30,000, C/D-sets 38,000 and a medium whelk stew 25,000 won; the March 2026 menu shows 35,000, 39,000, 49,000 and 31,000 won. We don't know exactly when the change happened.
  • The leftover-broth ramyeon changed: posts from April to late May 2025 say it was free, while posts from 27 and 30 May 2025 say it now costs 2,000 won or was about to become paid.
  • No post describes queuing. Some found it full — the upstairs was taken so they sat downstairs, or nearly every table including outside was occupied. That doesn't mean there's never a wait; nobody recorded one.
  • 18 visit posts give opening hours; 17 say 6 pm to 3 am, closed the second and fourth Sunday. One gives a 4 pm start and one says Monday–Saturday with every Sunday off. Most of these are copied info blocks.
  • The phone number 0507-1378-5714 is repeated across posts. That reservations and groups are accepted appears only in copied info; no one wrote about booking ahead.
  • Posts cluster heavily in April–June 2025 — 24 of 30 — and five carry the same five hashtags in the same order. None discloses sponsorship, but some may be commissioned. One March 2026 post labelled self-paid largely copies earlier posts' sentences, so we did not count it as a visit.
