CHEF'S WIT

셰프스위트 Syepeuseuwiteu It sounds like 'Chef Sweet', but the house spells it Chef's Wit — its own blurb, copied into one post, ties the name to its playful chefs.

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

Chef's Wit sits beside Hwaseong Haenggung palace, on the craft-workshop street in Namchang-dong (27 Jeongjo-ro 801beon-gil, Suwon). It serves pasta, risotto, pizza and steak alongside sushi and rice bowls: four posts say it knocked through into Tsuyoi, the sushi bar next door, so you enter through Chef's Wit and order both menus from one tablet. Pasta runs from 15,000 won for carbonara to 23,000 won for the spicy steak cream pasta, and a ten-piece sushi set is 15,000 won. You pick a heat level for pastas and risottos, and a free mini fruit drink and potato salad arrive once you sit down. We read 30 posts from December 2024 to October 2026, 24 of them from actual visits; 19 of the 30 were written in September–October 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Of 24 visit posts, 21 mention a fruit drink served in a tiny handled cup once you order. Nobody agrees on the flavour — strawberry, peach, plum — and one writer found it too sweet to drink.
  2. Twenty-three posts describe the free starter: mashed potato salad on crackers, topped with mandarin or olive, often with pickles on the side.
  3. You set a heat level for pasta and risotto when ordering, and one post mentions a mild, low-salt option for children. Six posts call the food spicy, mostly hotter than expected — one found even level 1 hot and suggests going a step lower. Another says if you skip the setting, the default has no heat.
  4. Eight posts say you order on a tablet at the table. One adds that it takes orders only — you pay at the counter on the way out — and that some two-seat tables had no tablet, so they moved to the bar.
4 more
  1. Sixteen posts describe seasonal decorations: the 14 from mid-September to October 2026 found Halloween pumpkin lanterns, and the two from around Christmas mention a tree. Several also describe two halves to the room — a wood-toned restaurant on one side, an izakaya-style corner with old Japanese posters and noren on the other.
  2. Eleven posts call the room spacious — roomy for Haenggung-dong, with well-spaced tables, plenty of four-tops, bar seats and a long table for groups. Seven mention the open kitchen.
  3. No post reports waiting. Four say they walked straight in: on a festival-week evening, on two weekday evenings (one at 8:15 pm), and at noon on a Sunday. Others say the room filled quickly at weekend opening or around 1 pm, and one writer booked through Naver for a weekend visit to be safe. A roundup's line that you must book or queue is quoted from others' reviews, so we didn't count it.
  4. Five posts call it good value and one calls it pricey, saying 3,000–4,000 won less per dish would have felt fair. Another found its rice bowl small for the price. Several mention government 'fair price' and 'safe restaurant' stickers, but those are the shop's own signage, not anyone's judgement.

Parking

3 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot3 of 24 posts

Three posts say in their own words that there is no parking of its own, and all five that drove used nearby public lots: the Hwaseong Haenggung lot about 50 m away at 900 won per 30 minutes, the free but small Namchang-dong temporary lot, or the Hanumul lot across the street at about 3,000 won an hour. One notes a long line into the public lot on the first day of a holiday.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)

No one describes the floor or any stairs from experience; only the address says 1st floor. That means nobody wrote about it, not that there is nothing to report.

No post says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. We only know there are two entrances: one writer found the door on the back alley confusing at first, another discovered a larger entrance on the far side.

Just one post mentions the toilet: out through the back door, shared by men and women, but clean. The same post's pasted info box lists separate toilets, contradicting what the writer saw. It is a single report, so we can't confirm it's still the case.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Only one post complains of slow food, but it timed it: ordered at 8:20 pm, the kaisendon came 29 minutes later and the gnocchi after 36. Another saw a lone chef running the kitchen until a second staffer arrived. Other posts say dishes came out almost together.
  • Nobody says they came by bus or subway. One sponsored post says it is under ten minutes' walk from the Paldalmun bus stop, but that writer drove. Several say it's a two-to-three-minute walk from the Hwaseong Haenggung entrance.
  • Portions split opinion: four posts found them generous (gnocchi, spinach pasta, steak salad, spicy steak pasta) and two found them small — the vongole's noodles and a salmon bowl with minced fish.
  • The pizza divides people. Five posts say the crust is thin, one calls it fairly thick and fluffy. Most liked it, but one called it below par and another stopped after one slice.
  • Two posts describe going back, two say they won't, and two are undecided. Three call it ordinary — one says it's the kind of place you'd drop into if it were round the corner from home — and one likened the ten-piece sushi to supermarket or buffet sushi.
  • Most posts give opening hours of 11:00–22:00, a break from 15:30 to 17:00, last orders at 15:00 and 21:30, and Tuesdays closed (16 posts list 11:00–22:00), though nearly all copy it from an info box. Two posts list 11:30–23:30, probably Tsuyoi's old hours, and one says it opens at 11:30. Check before you go.
  • One price has moved: the half-and-half steak was 25,000 won on the January 2026 menu and 32,000 won in a September 2026 post. Pasta prices (15,000 won carbonara, 21,000 won spinach pasta and so on) are unchanged from December 2024 to October 2026. The estimate of about 40,000 won for two pastas, before drinks, comes from a roundup post.
  • It hasn't moved, but it merged with Tsuyoi, the sushi bar next door, which still shows up separately on maps; we counted three posts written under the Tsuyoi name as this restaurant's. No post dates the merger, and a December 2024 post already lists sushi, so it may be older than that.
  • One post booked a table through Naver. Naver booking, CatchTable and the phone number 0507-1306-6898 appear only in pasted info boxes; no one writes about booking by phone.
  • Read the posts with their timing in mind. 19 of the 30 cluster in September–October 2026 and run through the same beats — date spot, year-end parties, welcome drink. Two posts say the restaurant's review event gives two pieces of sushi for reviews that include its name and the 'Haenggung-dong restaurant' keyword. One post discloses sponsorship, four say they paid their own way, and the rest say nothing.
