Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegunhosu

화덕으로간고등어 백운호수점 Fish from the wood oven

Data as of · Published ·

Past the lake at Baegunho, up where the village of Neungan backs onto Morak mountain, an old tile-roofed house has been made over into a single restaurant. The registered name is the longer one; the sign and the customers say Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo, Baegunhosu branch — it is a franchise with other branches, which one writer only worked out afterwards. Fish goes into a wood oven above 500°C and comes out on a tray with a clay pot of rice. Mackerel, atka mackerel, spanish mackerel, dried croaker, braised mackerel, stir-fried pork, roe soup, marinated crab: almost everything is a set-meal around that pot of rice, and the price includes a help-yourself bar with no limit on it. Eleven in the morning to nine at night, closed on weekdays between three and five. It opened in June 2026, and the posts we read run from that June to September.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. Half of what gets written about this place is the help-yourself bar. Every post we read mentions it; one writer's mother asked outright whether they had walked into a buffet. Six side dishes come to the table, and the bar holds a further set that never does — tteokbokki, kimchi pancake, japchae, acorn jelly, macaroni salad. Rice and the cabbage soybean soup refill too. Several writers say the sides alone would see off a bowl of rice, and one had already eaten a plateful before the fish arrived. This is why there is a one-dish-per-person rule: from age eight everyone orders a dish, and one post relays that four- to seven-year-olds must order from the children's menu.
  2. The oven is on show. Seven writers describe a separate oven room beside the entrance where you can watch the fish go in — a kiln, one calls it; two huge ovens, says another; visible behind the counter, visible even from outside. One writer calls it the thing that makes the place. Two note the stir-fried pork and the children's beef patty go into the same oven as the fish.

Posts saying you can park22 of 25 posts

This is a place you drive to. The whole front yard is the car park, and six writers found an attendant waving cars into place. The phrases repeat — room enough for a nervous driver, a wide private lot, no need to worry — and more than twenty of the writers parked a car there themselves. One notes there is no parking charge. But another came out after her meal to find the lot full, so the ease the off-peak visitors describe should not be read straight across to a busy hour.

Not one post says what floor it is on, or whether there are steps up to the door. The registered address says ground floor of a building at 148 Neungan-gil, and the writers consistently describe a single tile-roofed house standing in its own yard — a converted hanok, a detached building ringed by mountain. But nobody states it in so many words, and nobody counts the steps at the entrance. Nor do they say whether the floor changes level inside, or whether the private rooms sit up on a platform. Reading cannot fill this in, so we leave it empty.

Nobody writes about getting in by wheelchair. The word does not appear once across the twenty-five posts, and no one describes a threshold, a ramp or a step. All we have is two accounts of prams: one writer parked hers beside the table because the room was wide enough, and another was shown to a seat chosen so the pram would fit. A pram getting in is not the same as a wheelchair getting in — this is a converted tile-roofed house with its lavatories outside, and we do not know whether there is a lip at the door.

The lavatories are outside the building. Two writers saw this for themselves: one found a separate block outside the restaurant, and cleaner than she expected; the other places it directly opposite the entrance, men's and women's. Only one of them describes them as separated by sex — a third post says so too, but that line is lifted wholesale from the Naver listing, so we did not count it. Nobody writes about an accessible cubicle, a step at its door, or whether there are stairs on the way out to it. Nor about what the walk is like in the rain.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • The writers disagree about the size of the mackerel. Two were let down: one was startled at how small the fish looked and ended up filling up from the side bar instead; the other wanted a thicker fillet and called it the weak point for the money. Four say the opposite, that the flesh was plump. Seven writers are startled by size — but at the spanish mackerel and the dried croaker. Both complaints are about the mackerel; most of the astonishment is about the other fish, so they may not be contradicting each other at all, only eating different things. We could not settle it.
  • We know almost nothing about getting here without a car. Only two of the twenty-five posts touch on it. One writer walked about twenty minutes from the lakeside path up into the village, and going home caught a bus from a stop directly in front of the restaurant — that post is the one declaring sponsorship. The other says flatly that the lake needs a car. No post gives a bus number, a frequency, or the nearest station. The remaining twenty-three either drove or never say.
  • You may have to wait — but when is not clear. Two writers actually did: one at one o'clock on a weekday, seated after a short wait; another at midday on a weekday, twice surprised, first that the place was full and then that she was queuing. Against that, one writer walked straight in at one on a weekday, and another found most tables taken at weekday lunch but still got a seat, by the side bar. No post gives a ticket number or says how long the wait was. Two say weekends are busy, but both are passing on hearsay; we have no post written by someone who queued at a weekend. One writer booked by telephone.
  • This page is built on four months of writing. The restaurant opened in June 2026 — one writer had seen the banner announcing it while eating across the road, another found congratulatory flower stands still lining the entrance — and the posts we read run from 22 June to 23 September. We have summer and the start of autumn, and nothing else. Much is made of the yard, the seats under the eaves and the green view through the glass; nobody says what any of that is like in winter, or what having the lavatories outside means on a cold night. The same goes for prices: we can see the roe soup go from ₩17,000 to ₩18,000 across those four months, but not how anything moves over a year.
  • Most of the writers never say who paid. Two declare sponsorship — one with the tag dropped mid-paragraph, one with it heading the closing line of hashtags. Six state they paid their own way, four of those carrying Naver's receipt verification. The other seventeen say nothing at all. What we can see is that certain lines recur almost verbatim — the 500-degree oven, salt drained of bitterns for over ten years, a television comedian's seal of approval — which reads as the shop's own copy travelling from post to post. That does not make the silent posts sponsored; it means we cannot tell.
