Mimi Maratang

미미마라탕 Maratang is the Sichuan soup of numbing pepper and chilli that you build yourself from a bar of ingredients; Mimi is just the shop's name.

Data as of · Published ·

Mimi Maratang is a mala soup shop on the ground floor of the Gugal Sports Centre, across from the Giheung district office. You fill your own bowl from the ingredient bar and it is weighed at the till: 1,800 won per 100g for the soup, 2,800 for the dry stir-fry, with heat from level one (no chilli) to level four. Rice is free if you eat in. Eleven in the morning until ten at night, closed Mondays. One writer takes it to be run by a couple, and the kitchen is open to the room. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. Five writers comment on the price and all five say it is cheap. Nobody disagrees: 1,800 won per 100g reads as low against other mala shops; the stir-fry at 2,800 is called kinder than elsewhere; one writer's bowl always runs past twelve thousand elsewhere and comes out less here for the same amount of food; two people ate a soup and a stir-fry to bursting for under thirty thousand. It is not only the weight price doing that work — rice is free in the room, according to six posts, and two record the meat surcharge dropping from 3,000 to 2,000.
  2. Five writers touch on cleanliness, all five approvingly, and three of them say what they were looking at: hair ties and hand sanitiser set out, and the ingredient tubs themselves clean; the ingredients trimmed and turning over fast because the place is busy; the origin labels properly posted. One writer, who always cinches an apron tight so the broth cannot reach her shirt, found the strings here had an adjuster and says she has never seen that in a restaurant before. Whether the aprons are disposable seems to have changed: an October 2024 post calls them disposable, a September 2026 post says they are not, and have cartoon characters on them.

The most ordered dish is maratang (마라탕) — 7 of 8 posts.

Parking

1 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park1 of 8 posts

Four posts mention parking; one person parked. Three are bullet lines — a P with a tick, "parking available", or the Naver listing's options row copied whole. The fourth records doing it: you park on the third or fourth floor of the Gugal Sports Centre building, and on a Sunday evening there was plenty of room (February 2026). That is the only post that names a floor, and no post at all says whether it is charged or for how long. Two others came by car — one was picked up from work by a friend — without saying where they left it.

Getting there

Getting inside

No post says anything about the floor beyond the address. Our ledger puts the shop at unit 131 on the ground floor of the Gugal Sports Centre, and five writers copy "ground floor" into an address line, but not one mentions steps or a threshold at the door. One notes the open kitchen; another that it is tucked away in a lane. Three mala shops trade on that same floor, so from the posts alone you could not tell which door is ours.

Nobody wrote about getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. The words for wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, threshold, step and stairs appear nowhere in the eight posts — we searched by machine and checked by hand. Several describe a small room seating about twenty, but small is not an answer to whether you can get through the door.

Not one writer describes a toilet they saw. The phrase "separate men's and women's" does appear twice — but in the two posts that copy Naver's amenities row wholesale, the same blogger writing the same line twice, and those are not visits and are excluded. Whether it is inside the shop or out in the building's corridor, we do not know. That something is written down is not the same as somebody having seen it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 11 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Eight posts, not twenty-six. Sixteen were not about this shop, and three were about it but were not visits. There are three mala shops on this one ground floor. A September 2026 writer remarks on it herself — three of the same trade in one building. One of them, a branch of Radori Maratang at unit 101, shares our street address, and three of its posts came in with ours. Two more belong to similarly named shops in other cities: a Mimi Maratang in Gwangju that a writer ordered delivery from, and a Mimi Sichuan Maratang in Gangnam, Seoul. The remaining eleven caught on "mimi" used as something other than a shop name — a noodle chain, a tuna restaurant, a macaron shop, a Hello Kitty edition, somebody's nickname, and, in one case, the Korean phrase for "negligible". One was written by a blogger who calls herself Kim Mimi. The three we set aside as non-visits: two are the same blogger transcribing the Naver listing, their whole body reading like "293 visitors said the food is good", with no record of eating anything. The third is a template round-up with "source: Unsplash" under every image slot and an un-deleted "SEO keywords and clickbait titles" section at the foot.
  • Roomy and cramped both appear — two posts say roomy, four say small. The cramped side is more concrete: five or six tables (January 2025); about seven four-seaters and not large (February 2026); a snug size (August 2025); not very big, though the turnover makes it feel adequate (September 2026). The two who call it roomy are talking about the gaps between tables rather than the room itself — comfortable spacing, easy to sit down at lunchtime. Read together, it is a small room with generous spacing: seating for about twenty.
  • Nobody records queuing. Two saw a full room: one arrived at noon on a weekday to pick up a takeaway and found every seat taken; another met a large party on a weekday evening. A third guesses there would be a wait at peak, but that is a guess and is not counted. The bar itself can run low, though: the January 2025 visitor at noon found little left and was put out to find neither the prawn balls nor the tofu skin she wanted. In a shop where you pick your own ingredients, arriving late means choosing from less — and only that one post says so.
  • Nobody wrote about getting here without a car in their own footsteps. In eight posts not one describes the walk from a subway or a bus. One says it is easy to reach because the district office is nearby; another gives the only real direction we have — tucked in a back lane, round the corner from the GS mart — without saying which station that lane runs from. This is not a claim that the trip is hard, only a record that nobody wrote it.
  • No post declares a sponsorship. Five state plainly that they paid their own way, two of them posting the receipt; the other three are diary entries that say nothing either way. What is worth recording instead are the three we moved out of the count: two are keyword pages transcribing the Naver listing — one is titled "Yongin Giheung Gugal-dong Chinese Mimi Maratang recommended menu price hours review parking" — and one is a template round-up. Counting those three would take eight to eleven and inflate every figure on this page by nearly half.
