Ulleung Yakso Sutbul Garden
울릉약소숯불가든 Charcoal-grilled yakso — cattle raised on Ulleungdo's wild herbs — at a window over the sea in Sadong
Compiled from 18 blog posts read in fullSources →
Ulleung Yakso Sutbul Garden is a beef house on the shore at Sadong, about five minutes by car from the Sadong ferry terminal on Ulleungdo. Cattle raised on the island's wild greens and herbs are called yakso — medicine cattle — and this house grills them over charcoal set into the table. The windows face the sea, and nine of the eighteen posts talk about the window seats: more is written here about the view than about the beef. The room is large and there are private rooms, so groups come. At midday it lays out a ₩12,000 Korean buffet; in the evening it grills. The minimum order for the grill is three portions. The posts we read run from April 2025 to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- Two people still order three portions. Six posts say so. One writer works it through: she balked at three, then realised a portion is only a shade over a hundred grams, so three comes to about 300g. Two argue the rule is what makes the bill look frightening; another found three portions merely enough for two and was disappointed. One party stopped after three and ordered noodles rather than more beef; another added three portions to five and says it barely showed.
- More is written here about the window than about the beef. Nine posts describe the glass wall facing the sea and the tables along it — turn your head from the grill and there is the water; you watch the ferries come in; one writer marvels at eating beef, not fish, with that in front of her. Two say to take a window table if one is free, and one is still sore that they were all booked. As she puts it: for the same money, you may as well have the sea.
- The verdicts split: three call it exceptional, two call it fine. On one side — the two sisters who put down their chopsticks and said only "wow"; the writer for whom it was the best meal of the trip; the one who was won over at the first bite. On the other — "a perfectly ordinary restaurant I would not press on anyone", and "not, for the price, a wow". One writer prefers the yakso she bought at an island butcher and grilled herself, found this plateful richer than she expected, and adds that it may come down to the cut and the day. Several note that yakso is lean and dark and does not taste like the marbled hanwoo people know — which is much of what the disagreement is about.
- The house tells you up front that the wild garlic and the aster greens are bottomless. One writer connects it to the three-portion rule: since you have to order that much, they make a point of the refills. Ten posts talk about the myeongi — after the beef it is the most-written-about thing here — and two say there is more than enough to wrap every piece. Side dishes come again if you ask. One visitor had only ever eaten it pickled, and was delighted to be handed it raw, to wrap with.

- One writer reports that the island's chak gift-certificate app does not work here. She went round ten island restaurants marking which took it, and this one is flagged "mobile chak difficult". Since the same post explains that loading the certificate gets you 12% off, it is worth asking about payment before a meal this size. But this is one person's note from August 2026, and it speaks only of the app — paper certificates may be another matter.

Parking
4 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Four posts mention parking and they do not describe the same thing. One calls the space out front ample, one says simply that there is a private car park, and two count: two or three cars, cramped. One of those two offers a way out — an open lot two or three minutes' walk toward Sadong beach. Whether "ample" and "two or three" are the same patch of ground seen full and seen empty, we could not establish. Nobody reports failing to park.

Getting inside
| Second floor | 1 of 18 posts |

| Separate restrooms | 1 of 18 posts |
The dining room is upstairs — and only one writer says so. A 2022 visitor reports a cold store on the ground floor and the restaurant on the first. Separately, another notes that the owner runs a hostel in the upper part of the same building. Nobody writes whether there is a lift, or how many steps there are. One mention in seventeen does not mean the others found it at street level; it means nobody else raised it.
Not one writer mentions a step at the door or wheelchair access. In eighteen posts there is nothing about a sill, a ramp, or whether a chair or a pushchair fits. One party brought a 21-month-old and notes the high chairs, but says nothing about a pram. Set beside the single report that the dining room is upstairs, this is a thing worth checking — and we have nothing to check it with.
One post mentions the lavatory, in a single line: men's and women's are separate. Whether it is inside the restaurant or outside it, and what it is like, nobody writes. The other seventeen posts do not raise it at all.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 30 posts we gathered, 12 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Opinion on the price splits exactly down the middle — six and six. The dear side does the arithmetic: ₩30,000 a portion, three portions minimum, so ₩90,000 before anything else, and one writer sets the word "expensive" in brackets after it. Another says it costs more than you can eat your fill of. The other side counts grams: ₩30,000 for 130g undercuts most mainland beef houses, one argues, and only looks steep because of the three-portion rule; a party of two paid ₩106,000 with soju, a soft drink, stew and rice and calls that fair. They are looking at the same numbers. What divides them is the price they expected the island to charge.
- The price per portion has not moved in four years; the portion has. A 2022 visit written up in 2025 records 150g for ₩30,000 — and the same writer, checking, notes that the price is identical today but the portion is now 130g. Two other October 2025 posts also say 130g. We could not establish when it changed. Most posts give no weight at all, so "₩30,000 a portion" may not mean what it meant.
- Exactly one writer came by bus. She took the island loop service, got off and walked about five minutes — and then advises driving or taking a taxi instead, because you have to fit your meal around the timetable. Everyone else drove (two mention being at the wheel), was ferried there and back by a package tour, or was staying five minutes' walk away. No post names a stop or a route number.
- Nobody reports queuing, and nobody reports being turned away. One writer did miss out on a window table because they were all booked; another visited out of season to an easy room. One post warns it can get hectic when the coach parties arrive — but that writer went in 2022. How long you wait on a summer evening, we do not know.
- Almost nobody records the opening hours — what recurs instead is "ring first". One post gives numbers, noon to nine, and even that one puts a question mark after it. The others write "call to check" and "confirm separately", and one writer says she phoned 054-791-4050 before setting out to make sure they were open. Another rang as they were closing and was told to hurry over. Several posts note that island restaurants shut without notice in the winter low season, shorten their hours, and close early when they run out. We have no basis for printing a single set of hours for this place. Telephone before you go. If you are a group, ask about a table while you are on the line: one writer lost the window seats to bookings, and another says they will take twenty or a hundred with notice.
- Why the number is eighteen and not thirty. On 12 February 2026 an EBS travel programme featured this place, and ten posts about it went up between the 10th and the 15th. They repeat the broadcast — the Goguryeo tomb paintings, the brindled ox of the poem, the island fodder — in near-identical sentences, copy the address, phone number and prices off a map service, and never step inside. One says outright that its author would like to visit; another prices the grill at "around ₩35,000–40,000, market rate", where everyone who actually ordered it has paid ₩30,000 for four years running. Add a lodging review that links to a 2022 visit and a ten-things-to-do listicle, and twelve posts are out of the count.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship, and nine declare that they paid. One, though, is written by an island car-rental company: the author ate the lunch buffet and photographed the plate, but the same post argues against the island's price-gouging reputation, holds this restaurant up as the honest one, and closes with a link to its own rental site. We left it in the count — what is only in that post (no alcohol at lunch, one dish per person, trays running down after half twelve) is observation, and nothing in it contradicts the rest.
- One writer went twice and wrote it up twice — dinner on the first night and lunch on the last of a week-long family trip in the summer of 2025, split across a day-one post and a day-seven post. Eighteen posts, seventeen people, and two of those meals are the same trip.
