Ire Jipbap
이레집밥 A one-woman kitchen and cafe on Ulleungdo, named a county fair-price shop, where mountain-greens bibimbap and island gimbap stay under 10,000 won
Compiled from 14 blog posts read in fullSources →
Ire Jipbap is a small Korean kitchen on the ground floor of the Ire Town building, on the main road past Ulleung High School, midway between Ulleungdo's two harbours. The licence says simply "Ire"; the sign and the customers say Ire Jipbap. It sells mountain-greens bibimbap, a noodle soup with minced meat, and gimbap rolled with three island greens — and it is a café in the same room: order food and it is a restaurant, order a drink and it is a café. One woman cooks and serves, and the pickles and soy pastes on the shelf are her own. The county has named it a "fair price" shop, and it is one of the few places on the island where a meal costs under ₩10,000 — four writers describe the room filling with neighbours and local office workers rather than tourists. It opens early enough to be breakfast, and closes on Sundays. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- There is really one reason this place gets written about: these prices, on this island. Writers report ₩20,000 a head as the island norm, a bibimbap set seen elsewhere at ₩25,000, a first sighting of a meal under ₩10,000. Four mention the county's "fair price" plaque by the door. One reckons nothing else on the island trades at these rates; another, who had been microwaving rice cups at the guesthouse to save money, found this place on the last day of the trip and says so ruefully. Prices did step up in the summer of 2025 — the rice and noodle dishes by ₩1,000 each. The gimbap stayed at ₩4,000.
- The kitchen and the café share one room. As one writer puts it, nothing divides the space — order food and it is a restaurant, order a drink and it is a café. Three stayed in their seats for coffee or a latte afterwards. The coffee is brewed by the owner; the ades are seasonal fruit she puts up herself. Several describe shell mobiles hung from the ceiling, a note left by her granddaughter, and a shelf of worn board games, which makes it a room to sit in rather than clear out of. On size they disagree: one calls it roomy, another says it is not large but has a fair few four-seat tables.

Parking
6 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

You can park, but nobody agrees on how much room there is. Four writers left a car in front of the shop; three mention a rooftop lot a little further up the hill. One says it is tight but has always had a space, on both visits; another calls it awkward — one or two cars at most, check the traffic before you come. Three posts note that most restaurants on the island have no parking at all, which puts any of it on the credit side. The writer who found the rooftop lot guesses it belongs to the flats above, and thinks nobody minds a car left there over a meal.

Where it is

Getting inside
| Second floor | yes 0 · no 2 (of 14 posts read) |

This is the ground floor; the second floor of the building's annex is a scooter-rental shop called Ire Bike. They share a name and a street address, which search cannot untangle — of the twenty-seven posts we collected, eight turned out to be about the bikes and never mention the kitchen at all. One writer went up for a scooter, noticed "a restaurant called Ire Jipbap underneath Ire Bike", and came down for the bibimbap; another dropped in after returning the bike. For anyone touring the island on two wheels, lunch is at the same address — though those who walked up to collect a bike report that the ten minutes is all uphill.
Nothing in these posts touches on thresholds, ramps, or getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across all fourteen, none of those words appears. We know it is on the ground floor, that one writer walked in "through the door right beside where I parked", and that two describe the road outside as a slope. Whether there is a step at that door we could not establish.
No post mentions the toilet at all — not whether it is inside the shop or out in the building, not whether it is shared. This despite three writers arriving with children and several coming straight off a three-hour ferry. Not that there isn't one; nobody wrote it down.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 17 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Only two posts say anything about how busy it gets, and they say opposite things. One arrived after five on a Friday and had the room to themselves. Another came at ten to twelve and found every table taken, with the food slowed by the lunch rush. Both were seated, and nobody describes queuing. Beyond "noon is busy", we do not know.
- Not one post says how to get here without a car. All fourteen arrived by rented car or scooter and parked out front or on the roof; none stepped off a bus, and none gives a walking time from either harbour. The best directions we have are a driver's: heading from Dodong towards Jeodong, on the left of the main road just before you reach the high school. This is not an absence of buses but an absence of writers — the island's buses do run along this road.
- The hours come in two versions, and the shop closes for days at a time without notice. Four posts from spring and early summer 2025 give 08:00–19:00 with last orders at 18:30; three from late August 2025 onward give 07:00–18:30 with last orders at 18:00. That looks like a change rather than a disagreement, but we cannot tell which is current, so both are here. Five posts give Sunday as the weekly closing day. One writer waited two days because the owner had gone to the mainland, and ate here only on the morning they left — adding that the doughnut stall and the sushi place were shut for the same reason, and that not being able to choose your restaurant is part of the charm of Ulleungdo. With one woman running the place, a phone call is worth it if you are coming any distance.
- Nobody argues about the price; the taste is argued about in one place — the meat noodle soup. Three writers expected the Jeju dish of the same name and got thin noodles with minced meat instead. Two find it underseasoned; one places it awkwardly between anchovy broth and the Jeju version and noticed a faint smell to the meat that day. That same writer records the next table — locals — eating it happily. Two are unmoved by the gimbap as well. The bibimbap, the side dishes and the cold version of the noodles draw no complaints at all.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship. We read the bodies and the hashtags to the end, and found no "provided for review" line anywhere. Three writers state they paid; the rest say nothing. Fourteen posts are fourteen people — no blogger wrote twice. A great deal did arrive under this name, though: eight reviews of the scooter shop at the same address, one Seoul diary tagged to a fish-market stall called Ire Sanghoe, and a list of new openings that matched only because the word "skyrail" contains the syllables of the name. Three of what remained are not visits either — two lists compiled from searching, and one machine-written island guide whose phone numbers run 054-791-1234, -2345, -3456 in order.
