Bongja Makchang Pohang Mundeok

봉자막창 포항문덕점 Bongja is an old woman's name; makchang is the last stretch of pig intestine, grilled.

Data as of · Published ·

Bongja Makchang's Mundeok branch grills pork tripe and pork belly on a main road in Ocheon, Pohang. It sells one thing, really: a platter on which you take any two of six cuts — fresh tripe, sauced tripe, fresh belly, neck, sliced beef belly, frozen belly — mixed at no extra cost. The tripe arrives part-cooked from the kitchen. Steamed egg and shaved ice cost nothing, and the packet ramyeon at the self-serve counter you cook at your own table, which has a second burner for exactly that. Four in the afternoon until two in the morning. The chain began in Gyeongsan in 1995, and the television programme everyone here mentions was filmed at that original branch, not this one. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. What the shop does not charge for is the point of it. All twenty-nine posts record the steamed egg, the ramyeon and the shaved ice as free. More egg comes when you ask through the tablet; the ramyeon you take as a packet from the counter and boil at your own table, which five writers note has a second burner so the meat need never come off. Nine brands are named across the posts. The ice is ordered from the tablet too, and one writer had two. Another sums it up: she ordered the meat and then found there was nothing left to order.
  2. The self-serve counter is unusually large for a grill house. Twenty-seven posts describe it, and one writer says she has never seen a spread like it at a meat restaurant. Named between them: lettuce, perilla, pickled radish wraps, spring onion salad, spring-onion kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, aubergine, courgette, enoki, rice cake, garlic, garlic scapes, chillies and three sauces — plus three kinds of sausage to put on the grill beside the meat. One writer counts about twenty items. And one warns that the leaves are not brought to the table: if you want to wrap your meat, you fetch them yourself.
  3. The tripe comes part-cooked. Nine writers record it, and say it therefore needs little time on the grill. Even so, eight of them repeat the same instruction — cook it hard or it goes rubbery — because the shop has written it on the wall and on the tables. One writer has the owner's version: stop turning it, and flip it when the fat starts to bubble. Another was taught the layout: belly in the hot centre, tripe round the cooler rim. Two pass on the trick for the bracken — leave it until the meat has rendered, then cook it low on the plate in the fat.
  4. Leave a receipt review and you get fried rice or a plate of pork skin. Eight posts mention it, two of them surprised — elsewhere, they say, you get a soft drink. Of the four who name their choice, three took the pork skin, which is ₩5,000 on the card. It also means at least eight of the posts behind this page were written under that prompt, which is worth holding in mind against how warmly they read.

Parking

6 posts say you can park; 4 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park6 of 29 posts
Posts saying you cannot4 of 29 posts

Writers do not agree about parking, and the disagreement does not sort by date. Four say there is a car park: three spaces or so behind the building, with the street and the front as overflow (September 2026); a car park with a back door leading straight in (July 2026); a writer who found nowhere on the main road and used the lot behind (May 2026); one who simply says the lot behind is there (August 2026). Four say there is not: no dedicated parking, use the road in front or the lanes (May 2026); no dedicated parking, park nearby (April 2026); park on the verge (August 2026); park on the verge (January 2026). Both groups are writing in 2026, and two of them a month apart. It may be that three or four spaces reads as a car park to one person and as nothing to another — but the posts do not settle it. If you drive, plan on the side streets.

Getting there

Getting inside

No post says what floor it is on. The address and the licence both say ground floor, but not one writer mentions it — nor whether there are steps, nor whether the back door and the front door are at the same level. One post does say ground floor, but that one is about the old building.

Nobody writes about getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Not a step, not a door width, not whether you could pass between the tables. Eighteen writers call the tables well spaced, but that is about sitting down. Three came with children, one of them with a two-year-old — and none says whether a pushchair came too.

Nobody writes about the toilet. One of the twenty-nine even says so outright: she did not use it, so she has no photograph of it. Whether it is inside, whether it is split by sex, how many stalls — we do not know. For a place that serves drinkers until two in the morning, that is a real gap.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • This shop has moved. The old address was 134 Wondong-ro; it is now at 108. A January 2026 writer is explicit — the branch near her home had closed, it has reopened, and *the location is different from the old one*. A February writer says it vanished and then reappeared; an August writer calls it her first visit since the move. So the four posts from October 2024 to April 2025 describe a different building. We have not counted what they say about the room, the parking or the hours: the old place shut at midnight rather than two in the morning, and had a wide car park right beside it. We have counted only what they ate and what they paid — the platter was ₩39,000 then. One of the four even has its map check-in on the old listing.
  • Nobody writes about getting here without a car. Four give directions and all four are for drivers — across from this shop, opposite that bathhouse, near the cinema, by those flats. One offers times from three landmarks, twenty-five, twenty and eleven minutes, all of them driving. No bus, no walk. And since the place runs to two in the morning, the way home is a question too — one nobody answers.
  • Nobody records actually queuing, but six writers describe the room filling up. One arrived at opening and left with the place full; one had it to herself and watched it fill within half an hour; one came at ten to six and saw the rush at half past; one chose eight on a weekday precisely because she had heard about the wait at dinner time. All six got in early and dodged it, and none puts a number on the wait. Three say to book if there are several of you.
  • Three posts declare a sponsorship — one at the top, through a review agency; two by the #ad tag on the Instagram post they embed. Four state they paid themselves; the remaining twenty-two say nothing either way. We kept the three, because they are specific about what was eaten and what it cost — and one of them is the post that warns the hours on the door differ from the ones online. One more thing to discount. Sixteen posts carry almost the same sentence about two television personalities praising the shop's top-grade tripe and pork belly. The programme was filmed at the chain's original branch in Gyeongsan, not here — and the only post that says so is the one we left out of the count.
