Korean

Hyeondae Jjimdak

현대찜닭 Hyeondae is the Korean word for 'modern', and jjimdak is soy-braised chicken; none of the posts explains why the house took the name.

Compiled from 16 blog posts read in fullSources →

A one-dish house in the jjimdak alley of Andong's old market (47 Beonyeong 1-gil): soy-braised chicken, 32,000 won for one bird or 48,000 won for one and a half, regular or spicy. You eat it in a small shoes-off room or take it away in an insulated bag. We read 26 posts from 29 November 2025 to 24 October 2026. Two were about other shops, and 16 describe an actual visit, 5 of them by people who took the food back to a hotel or home. The phone number given is 054-857-2662.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Fourteen of the 16 visits call the portion large. One couple ate a single chicken and still had about half left; another pair found one chicken plus a bowl of rice just right; two takeaway posts say one chicken fed three or four adults. The glass noodles come up again and again, described as far more than in ordinary jjimdak.
  2. The room is small. Five posts counted the tables and got 7, 9, 9, 9 and 10, and five say the room is tight or the tables close together. Three posts say you take your shoes off at the door. Only one post mentions the toilet: it is not inside but next door.
  3. Four posts waited: two groups ahead at 1 p.m. on a weekday, 20 minutes at a weekday lunch, 10 to 15 minutes in line. One weekend visitor found the room full and the line long, and took the food away instead. Someone arriving at 2:10 p.m. on a Saturday was told it would be five minutes. Once seated, it is fast: two posts say the food came in under five minutes.
  4. Heat is disputed: three posts found it spicy, two did not, one could not decide. One diner was told the regular level was about as hot as Shin Ramyun and ended up in tears; another found even the spicy level mild, and a family said their children ate the regular one happily. Several posts say the staff compare the heat to Shin Ramyun, but they disagree on which level gets that comparison.

  1. Five posts took the food away. The chicken comes chilled, with the noodles and vegetables packed separately in an insulated bag, plus cooking instructions; one Seoul-bound customer was given a large ice pack as well. Opinions on the reheated result differ: one found it bland and greasy, another said takeaway does not taste like eating in and recommended staying.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 16 posts read)

No visitor says what floor the shop is on or whether there are steps. That does not mean ground level; nobody wrote about it.

No visitor describes the entrance step or wheelchair or stroller access. One post lists 'wheelchair: not usable', but that is copied listing data from someone who never went in. Three visitors do say you take your shoes off to enter.

Only one post mentions the toilet, saying it is next door rather than inside. Nobody describes its condition or whether it is separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 24 posts we gathered, 8 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-233 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Nobody describes arriving by bus or train; everyone who mentions the trip parked at the old-market public car park.
  • Thirteen posts give the same hours, 10:00 to 21:00 every day, all copied from listings. The only first-hand check is a family that walked in right at the 10 a.m. opening. One post says there is no afternoon break; nobody gives a last-order time.
  • Prices are 32,000 won for one chicken, 48,000 won for one and a half, 1,000 won for rice, unchanged from November 2025 to October 2026. One post found it expensive now that a chicken costs over 30,000 won; another called the price reasonable. One paid with the Andong local gift voucher.
  • Most posts give 054-857-2662; one also lists 054-854-0137. Several copy 'reservations possible', but nobody says they booked. The tip about phoning ahead to cut the takeaway wait comes from someone who only received the food as a gift.
  • Most verdicts are positive, but two visitors call it ordinary, saying it tastes like jjimdak you can get anywhere in Seoul or at a neighbourhood shop. Two identical news-roundup posts that end in a card-wallet ad describe no visit and were not counted.
