Gyeongmi Sundae

경미순대 A blood-sausage soup house across from the Mungyeong hospital, open from seven in the morning — but half the tables are there for the squid grilled over briquette coals. Jeomchon is the town centre; the older branch across town is a different shop with a different menu.

Gyeongmi Sundae is a blood-sausage soup house in Jeomchon, Mungyeong, directly opposite the front gate of the Jeil hospital. Seven in the morning to nine at night, closed Thursdays. The name says soup, but the briquette grill is half the reason people come — squid and pork, marinated and laid over coals on a wire rack. The broth is not the milky kind; it runs clear with an amber cast, and you choose sausage only, meat only, or both. The room is almost all locals: office workers and older regulars at lunch, and a few tables drinking from early afternoon. The posts we read run from November 2024 to August 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Writers disagree about the pork smell, though the weight is lopsided. Most say there is none, and the wording repeats: no off smell, nutty; not gaminess but depth; the head meat carrying nothing of its own. Three writers say they do not normally eat this soup at all, and all three ate this one. One writer says the opposite, and does not mean it as a complaint — she calls the broth thick with a faintly funky note, warns that it will divide people, and says she loves it. Hers is among the earliest posts we have, from November 2024, but we cannot tell whether that is time passing or simply her palate.
  2. It is somewhere you can reach on foot. Two writers place it close to the Jeomchon intercity bus terminal, one suggesting a bowl before your bus. It also sits between the city hall and the hospital, and the customers come from there: two note early risers eating before hospital appointments, two the lunchtime office crowd, one a table of soldiers. One post is by a couple riding the cross-country cycle route who stopped for breakfast.
  3. The side dishes come from a self-serve counter. The lists overlap: cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi, salted shrimp, red chilli paste, chopped green chilli, side plates. Four writers refilled the kimchi more than once. What comes up most often here is the chopped green chilli — one notes it is real chilli put through a grinder rather than powder, two say it cleans up the broth, and three advise stirring the red paste in halfway through to turn the bowl spicy. Four mention salt, pepper and perilla powder standing on every table. It is not always spotless — one writer arriving after the lunch rush found the counter a little untidy.
  4. Prices moved over the twenty months we read. The soup was 8,000 won on four menu boards between November 2024 and October 2025, and 9,000 in posts from May and July 2026; the rice-less stew went from 7,000 to 8,000. One writer in July 2026 puts it as creeping up but still cheap for the times. Some things did not move: the grilled squid held at 12,000 and the pork at 11,000 from March 2025 to July 2026, and the sausage-and-head-meat plate stayed at 11,000. Nobody calls the place expensive.
  5. It packs to go, from two portions up — two writers note the minimum. One took the sliced meat and sausage home for the rest of the family; another arrived late, found the dining room closing, and was still sent off with grilled squid and a soup. A third, visiting someone in hospital, regrets not taking any and plans to next week.
  6. Not one writer reports queuing. Several describe a wide room with plenty of tables, and four sat down at once — on a holiday weekday, a weekend lunch, a weekday afternoon, and a late market-day afternoon. The hour matters, though: two warn that weekday lunch fills with office workers, one found it near full at seven on a Sunday evening, and two walked in at eleven in the morning to a room already busy. It is worth noting that most of the writers we read went at quiet times.

Parking

1 posts say you can park; 6 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you cannot6 of 24 posts

There is no car park. Two writers say you can fit one car in front of the shop; beyond that everyone parked somewhere different — the hospital car park (one paid, one reports the first hour free), the city hall side, the main road, a back lane, the road by the rose garden. One says flatly that parking is awkward. One puts it five minutes on foot from city hall. If you are driving, plan on the hospital car park — it is the answer that comes up most.

Nobody wrote about getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. That is not a no — it means no one looked. In twenty-five posts there is no mention of a step at the door, a ramp, or the width of the entrance, and none says whether the toilet could be used from a chair. One writer who came here as a child remembers floor seating and says it has changed, so it appears to be chair seating now — but that is one person's memory. Five writers brought children and found it fine; one child ate two bowls of broth with rice and meat stirred in, and another, who cannot take heat, got through the soy-marinated grill.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • There are two Gyeongmi Sundae in Mungyeong, and this page is the Jeomchon one. One writer states that the original is beside the northern bus terminal by Heungdeok market and that this is the second shop; two others simply note there are two. The menus are not the same — two say the original does not serve the grilled dishes, and one came across town for that reason. One writer also finds the meat different: leaner here, with more fat worked through it at the original, though he flags that as his own impression. Check which one a post is about. Of the thirty posts we gathered, one gave a Heungdeok address and linked to a map entry under a different name, so we dropped it.
  • Few writers discuss the service, and those who do disagree. The good reports are specific: minced garlic brought on request, soybean and chilli-vinegar pastes produced when asked for, a solo diner's table laid with care. There is one on the other side — a plate of grilled pork nobody had ordered, and from there an order that came out one dish at a time, so the table never ate together. That writer's mood recovered over the food and he says he would come back. This is not enough to say which is typical.
  • Only one writer describes the toilets from having seen them: past the till at the back of the room, on its right, men's and women's separate. Nobody says how many cubicles, whether they are cramped, or whether they are clean. Two mention high chairs, but one of those is a facility list copied from a listing, so we did not count it; one writer saw them for herself. Nobody mentions a nappy-changing table.
  • Not one post says what floor it is on, or whether there are stairs, or whether there is a step at the door. What the writers place is the location — opposite the hospital's front gate, on the lane by the rose garden — and, in one case, getting out of a car and walking straight in. Whether you have to climb to reach it, we cannot say.
  • There are two telephone numbers. Thirteen posts give 054-554-9898 and nothing else; one writes '054-556-1234 / 554-9898' side by side. The number in the public business register we hold is the 556-1234 one — presumably the registered contact, or an old line, though we have not confirmed it. This page carries 054-554-9898, the number the writers actually use.
