신촌약수식당 Chicken simmered in the local iron-and-carbonate spring water, under a lid of scorched rice
Korean · Cheongsong-gun, Jinbo-myeon
Data as of · Published ·
Sinchon Yaksu Sikdang is a chicken-and-broth house on the trunk road at Jinbo, next to the Dongcheongsong interchange in Cheongsong. The village sits on a mineral spring, iron and carbonation both, and restaurants that boil chicken in that water stand along both sides of the road; this is one of them. The spring itself runs beside the restaurant's own sign, and people drink from it or fill a canister before or after eating. Two set menus — one crowned with a sheet of scorched rice, one served a bowl per person — each a minimum of two portions, each bringing a plate of grilled apple-marinated chicken for every two people. A single-portion bowl exists for those who want less. The pot takes thirty to forty minutes, so most people telephone their order ahead. The posts we read run from May 2025 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- You telephone before you come. Nine posts time the cooking and five of them give the same figure: thirty to forty minutes. Two explain that the pressure cooker only goes on once the order is in. Eleven posts raise booking and none argues against it — seven ordered the food itself by phone, two used the Naver system. They also record what it bought them: one called thirty minutes ahead and waited five; one advises twenty to thirty; one found the food waiting as she sat down. It is not a guarantee. One writer booked ninety minutes in advance, got the grilled chicken first and then waited another twenty for the pot — by which time the grilled chicken had gone cold under the air conditioning.
- Both set menus start at two portions. Six posts say so and none disagrees, which changes the arithmetic if you are alone or not very hungry. One couple, having eaten a large breakfast, asked whether they could order only the single-bowl version listed among the sides, and were told yes without fuss — and got the full spread of side dishes anyway. Odd numbers work in your favour: since the grilled chicken comes one plate per two people, two parties of three were given two plates, and one party of five got three.
- Everything went up by ₩2,000 in the spring of 2026. Five posts between July 2025 and February 2026 give figures that agree to the won — ₩21,000, ₩17,000, ₩13,000, ₩19,000 — and every post from May 2026 gives those four numbers two thousand higher. On whether it is worth it the writers split three against three. Those who say yes point to the jujube, gingko, mung bean and ginseng in a ₩13,000 bowl, and to getting both the pot and the grilled chicken for ₩19,000. Those who say no are more specific: 'there's plenty of it, but the only chicken is that one drumstick, so ₩23,000 a head feels steep.' Nobody complained about the price before it rose, and all three complaints are from September 2026.
- Twelve writers say there is too much food and nobody says there is too little — and it shows in what they do about it. Ten took leftovers home. Seven describe the arrangement, always the same: bag it yourself and it is free, a container costs ₩1,000 and you ask a member of staff for one. Two set some aside before they began; one ate the rest of the porridge for breakfast the next day. One reckons a single bowl would do two or three people.
- The queue is a matter of when you come. Seven writers found no wait and two did — and all seven mention in the same breath that they came after the lunch rush, at one in the afternoon, or late on a weekday evening. The two who waited give the same reason: the tables were held by people who had telephoned. One turned up without booking and waited; the other was told that arriving even slightly late means a wait, and reckons she nearly missed lunch altogether. One writer watched the room fill at noon; another arrived at one on a Sunday to a full car park and still sat down at once, the room being large. One notes a whiteboard by the door where waiting parties write their names.
- A receipt review gets your table two bottles of soft drink. Five posts mention it and three collected. You find the restaurant on Naver, leave the review and show it to a member of staff; the receipt itself comes if you ask. One writer does the arithmetic — ₩4,000 saved — which squares with the ₩2,000 the board charges for a drink.
- Seventeen posts call it clean and none calls it otherwise — and they mean particular things by it. Three note the disposable sheet laid over each table, one the individually wrapped cutlery, four the brassware the side dishes arrive in. One writer's mother thought she had walked into an expensive traditional restaurant; another lists 'refurbished not long ago' as one of the three reasons she picked this place over its neighbours. Two mention the remodelling directly. One writer's companion, though, remarked on the way in that the interior looked new — and on the way out that he no longer thought this was the place he usually went to. That is what happens on a road where a dozen restaurants sell the same dish.

Parking
15 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

This is a roadside place you drive to, and parking is not the problem. Fifteen writers parked and none failed to. Two counted the spaces and disagree — eight, says one; ten, says the other. Eight put the spaces in front, two add more to the left or behind, one says you may use the other side of the road if it is full, and one the verge. Five describe it as roomy. One drove round the block because she could not find the way in.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Toilet inside | 2 of 25 posts |

Nobody writes about steps. Our own address record gives no floor, and in twenty-six posts no one mentions a lip at the door or anything to climb on the way in. Nor does anyone mention an upstairs or a basement. Ten call the room large; one says flatly that the place is not that big. One notes a table that seats eight; one says there is a separate room for groups. It reads like a single-storey roadside building — but that is us noting an absence, not a description anybody wrote.
Whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets in, nobody says. No ramp, no threshold, no gangway width in twenty-six posts — and this is a restaurant people bring their parents and grandparents to. Nine came with family, among them a man who drove a couple in their eighties here after a hospital discharge, a woman who brought her grandmother, and three sisters who brought their mother. Five writers saw high chairs with their own eyes, and one with a toddler found plenty of them. None of them mentions a step.
Two writers say the lavatory is inside the restaurant — one listing it among the three reasons she chose this place over its neighbours, the other simply noting it in passing. Whether men's and women's are separate, nobody says: one post's information block claims they are, but that line is lifted from the shop's Naver listing and we have not counted it. A third writer says the lavatory was clean. Beyond those three, nobody raises the subject at all.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 29 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Closing time has been pulled forward twice in a year. Seven posts from May 2025 to February 2026 give 10:00–20:30, last order 20:00. Three from May and July 2026 give 10:00–20:00, last order 19:30. Four from September 2026 give 10:00–19:30, last order 19:00. All sixteen agree on the ten o'clock opening. One post from November 2025 contradicts itself, giving 20:30 at the top and 20:00 at the bottom. The four most recent posts all say 19:30, so assume that. Only one writer says anything about a mid-afternoon break, and what he says is that there isn't one.
- We have recorded the closing day as 'Tuesday', but it is not every Tuesday. Seven posts say the second Tuesday of each month; one, from July 2026, says every other Tuesday. Our records can only hold a weekday, so all eight went in as Tuesday — which makes a monthly closure look weekly. Meanwhile another July 2026 post states flatly that the place never closes. Three different answers, and not one of these writers went on a Tuesday and found the door shut — every one of them is copying an information line. If you mean to come on a Tuesday, telephone (054-874-0234). You were going to telephone anyway; the pot takes forty minutes.
- Four of the thirty confirmed posts are out, which is why the denominator is twenty-six. One is a directory of twenty Cheongsong restaurants with telephone numbers and opening hours, and contains no visit. One is the same blogger's second write-up of a single visit, as a trip itinerary — counting both would turn one meal into two, so we kept the fuller one. One copies out the menu board, adds some claims about the medicinal properties of ginseng root, and ends with an entire paragraph advertising franchise opportunities, with not a line about what was ordered. The fourth is probably about a different restaurant — see below. Two posts by one blogger from July and August 2025 we did keep: different days, different company.
- A dozen restaurants on this road sell the same dish, and it cost us a whole post. The one we dropped is titled with both names run together, and its information block gives an address and a telephone number that belong to the restaurant across the road, not to this one. Only the Naver check-in widget pointed here. Matching prices prove nothing — another writer explains that every place on this stretch has the same menu at the same prices, which is why she chose on ratings alone. The till-side item does not match either: here it is astragalus taffy, and that post describes honey black coffee and soft-serve. We could not tell which restaurant it was about, so we counted nothing from it. For what it is worth, one writer distinguishes the two clearly — she went to the other one last year and this one this year, and says why she changed.
- Not one of the twenty-six says how to get here without a car. No bus, no train, no walking time. All seventeen who say how they arrived, drove. Even the directions are written for drivers: one minute from the Dongcheongsong interchange on the main road; twenty-five minutes by motorway, ten or fifteen more on the ordinary road; twenty-five to thirty minutes from the resort at Juwangsan; an hour and a half from Daegu, two hours from Yangsan, not far from Andong. If you do not have a car, none of this helps you.
- Nobody declares a sponsorship. The words for it never appear, in the bodies or the hashtags. What does appear, in nine posts, is a statement that they paid for it themselves; two say somebody else did — a grandmother in one case, a companion in the other. The remaining fifteen say nothing. Uniform praise is not the same as identical posts: one writer found the food unremarkable and said so, and another concluded that nothing here is a flavour you could only get here. Those two are from October 2025 and September 2026.
