Sosohambak · Kkachiseom

소소함박·까치섬 Soso means small and modest and hambak is the Korean word for hamburg steak; Kkachiseom, 'magpie island', is the upstairs café, which says it took the name from the magpies in painter Chang Ucchin's work.

A two-storey hanok at 21 Sonhyoja-gil, at the start of Hwangnidan-gil facing Cheonmachong tomb in Gyeongju. Downstairs, Sosohambak serves charcoal-finished hamburg steak, soy-marinated abalone-and-shrimp rice, raw-beef bibimbap and cold buckwheat noodles on one-person trays; upstairs, Kkachiseom is a café selling monaka and cream-topped lattes and doubles as the restaurant's waiting room. Most single dishes are 15,000 won; the Soso set for two (two mains, one side) is 44,000 won. We read 30 posts from 15 June to 25 October 2026; 27 describe an actual visit (17 ate downstairs, 11 went to the café, one did both).

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect a long wait at lunch. Eight posts waited, one did not. October posts arrived at 11:30 to find 20 groups ahead (45 minutes), at 11:45 to find 29 groups (1 hour 15 minutes), and at dinner faced 25 groups and an hour. An August post waited under 10 minutes behind two groups on a Sunday at 11:30, and a July post walked in at Monday opening but saw the room full half an hour later. You sign up on the Tabling device at the door and get a KakaoTalk message when your turn comes.
  2. The waiting area is the upstairs café: seven posts waited there or described it as the waiting room, and one was glad not to stand outside in the heat. Twelve posts note that showing your meal receipt or Tabling number gets 20% off at the café.
  3. The big windows are the point: ten posts describe looking out over the pond, fountain, Daereungwon wall and Cheonmachong. One weekend post found the window seats taken and sat in the middle of the room.
  4. Each table carries instructions: dip the hamburg steak in the poached egg and sauce, then mix the rest into the rice. Seven posts called it juicy, four thick, and three said it had no gamey smell.
3 more
  1. All eight posts that commented on the fried items — fried shrimp, menchi katsu, yuringi chicken salad — called them crisp.
  2. Most found the portions generous: six posts (the cold noodles were 'almost one and a half servings', the fried-shrimp side large), against one that said they were not.
  3. Four posts came with children and five mention high chairs. One says baby tableware was provided; another says the child crossed the pond's stepping stones again and again.

Parking

Posts saying you cannot2 of 27 posts

There is no parking at the restaurant. Two posts say so from experience, and the five that drove parked at nearby lots such as the Jjoksaem temporary lot or the free Seorabeol Cultural Center lot and walked about five minutes.

Getting inside

Second floor19 of 27 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 5 (of 27 posts read)
Toilet inside1 of 27 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 2 (of 27 posts read)

The restaurant is on the ground floor and the café upstairs: 19 posts describe the upper floor and five say the restaurant is on the first floor. Three mention a railed terrace upstairs, and one post walked up by the stairs.

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or pushchair got in — we simply don't know. One post climbed stairs to the café, and none mentions a lift.

Accounts of the toilets differ. The two posts that described them said they are shared by men and women (one placed them upstairs); two posts copied 'separate men's and women's' from an info listing, which we did not count.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No post arrived by bus or train; one simply notes the express bus terminal is about 15 minutes' walk away.
  • The two floors keep different hours. Most posts give the restaurant as 11:00-21:00 with a 15:30-17:00 break and last order at 20:10; five say the break applies on weekdays only, and two give a 10:30 opening (one of them a 20:30 close). The café runs 10:30-19:00; five posts give Tuesday and Wednesday as closing days and three Tuesday only — two posts from 10 July said Tuesday, posts from 24 July on said both. Most of this is copied from listings, so check before you go.
  • Prices: from July to September 2026 the charcoal hamburg steak was 15,000 won, the beef version 19,000 and menchi katsu 15,000; from October, 'NEW' stone-plate versions were added at 17,000 (pork), 21,000 (beef) and 17,000 (katsu). Highballs appear at both 7,000 and 8,000 won. One couple paid 49,000 won for the Soso set and a drink. On value, two posts called it good value and two hedged ('on the high side, but').
  • Eight posts give the phone number as 0507-1469-0457 and two give 010-3627-0070. On reservations they disagree: one says to book ahead on CatchTable, another was told bookings are by phone only; the rest only describe joining the on-site Tabling queue.
  • Many posts carry the same search keywords in their titles and tags and repeat the shop's own lines — beef 'two or three days after slaughter', sauce 'simmered 12 hours from 17 ingredients and aged 72 hours' — in the same order. Three disclose sponsorship and one says it was not paid for by the writer. We treated those lines as copied and did not count them.
