Raw fish

Sinsin Hoetjip

신신횟집 A sashimi house by Gangu harbour in Yeongdeok, where the owner's own boat supplies the day's catch.

Data as of · Published ·

Sinsin Hoetjip is a sashimi house on the main road at Opo-ri, between Gangu harbour and the Samsa headland park in Yeongdeok. The *Sinsin* named on the sign is the owner's own boat; several writers say the fish comes off it, or from the dawn auction, and that the plate is made up of whatever landed. The menu divides in two: a mixed platter in three sizes, whose contents change with the catch, and *mulhoe* — cold raw fish, made the Yeongdeok way, with chilli paste loosened with water and ice rather than poured-over iced broth. A board on the wall explains how to mix it. A husband and wife run it; the room holds six or seven tables of four. A new hotel nearby means a great many customers only come to collect. The posts we read run from August 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. Seven writers describe the thickness of the cut. One holds a piece of flounder against his palm; another says the slices are broad and thick enough to chew properly. Nobody says they were thin. What is on the plate changes by the day: the six who list the fish list six different sets, and three say outright that the platter is made up of whatever came in. In August 2026 a typhoon kept the boats in and one writer got flounder instead of the plaice she came for. Two went looking up a fish called *sanji* and came back none the wiser.
  2. Write a receipt review and you choose three extra dishes. Two writers list the options — kimchi pancake, seaweed soup, sushi rice, a small squid stir-fry, or an uncooked pot of stew — and three note they are packed with a takeaway order too. One says that with three to choose it would be quicker to name what you don't want. But it also muddies the count: one writer admits she could not tell the review dishes from the standard ones because the owner explained they overlap. How many side dishes there are depends on who is writing.
  3. They disagree about the price, and the fault line is clear — it is the grade. All six who call it good value are talking about the standard platter, the takeaway, or the *mulhoe*: fifteen thousand won a head; a small that was generous; that much fish for that money. Both who call it dear had the premium grade, eaten in. One was delighted by a takeaway in January, came back in March for the large premium at ₩160,000, asked what she had paid for, and concluded the place is for taking away. The other spent over ₩80,000 and felt he was paying restaurant prices for a local spread. One writer watched a customer read the menu and walk out. The listed prices themselves do not move: four copies of the menu between January and September 2026 all agree.
  4. Things keep arriving that nobody ordered. The stew is free, and one writer warns you not to order it because it comes anyway; another says you ask for it once the fish is gone. One was brought an extra braise because the kitchen thought they had been stingy with the first; another was given ice separately for a grandmother who cannot take cold food. There is a other side: the writer who spent over ₩80,000 found little worth reaching for, and one says plainly that this is not a place with a big spread.
  5. Nobody records queueing, and four say they did not have to. One made it a heading of its own: no wait at weekday lunch, no list, no ticket machine. Another puts it in her summary. A third arrived at noon, as the doors opened, and was the first customer. But one writer says she would have waited if she had not phoned ahead — and she had. It is worth remembering the room only holds six or seven tables.
  6. More than half these posts are by guests of one hotel. It opened in December 2024, fifteen minutes on foot or three by car from here, and six writers say they came looking for raw fish because the snow crab the town is famous for was beyond them. Nine took the food back to their room, and three describe watching other people collect theirs while they ate. Families outnumber every other kind of party, and some brought small children.

Parking

Posts saying you can park9 of 25 posts

Nine writers parked. The count in front of the shop is given as one or two, as three, and as one to three; nobody reports failing to find a space. There is a public car park immediately next door — one writer moved her car there after reading a notice on the shop wall, another gives the landmark beside it, and a third says there is plenty of kerb besides. One found it easy on a weekday evening.

Getting inside

Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 25 posts read)

No post says which floor it is on. Several read as though you walk in off the road, but not one writer says ground floor, and none mentions going up or down. We do not count what we merely infer.

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. The words for a step at the door, a level entrance, a ramp or stairs appear nowhere in the twenty-five. Two describe bench and sofa seating along the wall, but nobody describes the doorway. We have not checked it.

One post mentions the toilet, and says it is shared between men and women (September 2026) — the same writer who tabulated parking, waiting and high chairs. Whether it is inside the restaurant or out, and how many cubicles, even she does not say, and the other twenty-four do not raise it at all. That is one person's word.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Twenty-five posts are not twenty-five people. One writer posted the same text to two platforms in July 2026, and another split a single trip into a restaurant review and a travelogue. Counted by person it is twenty-three. One post covers two separate visits, in January and March. Of the twenty-eight confirmed, we removed a golf-resort review in which this restaurant appears only as a link at the bottom, and left two more out of the count for having no record of anyone eating: a five-line page copied from the platform listing, and a round-up of ten restaurants written entirely from other people's reviews.
  • Two writers discuss getting here without a car, and they disagree. One says it is ten minutes' walk from the Gangu bus terminal. The other found that the usual taxi app does not work in this area: he had to ring for a car, and a six-to-eight-minute ride cost ₩10,000. Two walked the fifteen minutes from the hotel for the sake of the walk; one warns that it is uphill. Nobody gives a bus route or a stop.
  • Whether it closes on Mondays depends on when the post was written — it looks as though the rule changed. Five posts between August 2025 and June 2026 all say Mondays. But two from August 2026 copy the platform's day-by-day table, and in it Monday opens at noon like the rest; a September 2026 post says there is no closing day at all. We could not settle which is current — but this reads as a change rather than a disagreement. The closing time splits the same way: five say ten at night on weekdays and midnight from Friday, four say ten every day, and one says midnight every day. If you are going on a Monday, ring first.
  • One customer paid more than the listed price. In September 2026 a writer went expecting ₩20,000 for the plaice *mulhoe* and was charged ₩22,000 — told in advance, and guessing the listing had not been updated. The squid prices scatter even more, from ₩10,000 to ₩50,000 a plate, but the portions differ and cannot be lined up; one August 2026 writer notes the market price for squid has jumped and that other shops told him the same.
  • There are no high chairs. In September 2026 a family with a fifteen-month-old asked the owner directly and were told so; they fetched a baby seat from the car. The benches along the wall were tried first. The other writers who brought children say nothing about seating for them.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship, and seven say plainly that they paid. But this is a place that gives you three extra dishes for a review, so paid meals and free food sit side by side — eight posts mention it. One post carries an affiliate disclosure, but it belongs to a baby-food article linked from the same page, not to this restaurant.
