Yeongwol Sogeumppang

영월소금빵 Yeongwol Salt Bread — a salt-roll bakery facing Yeongwol station, whose own line folds the county's unsprayed gondre thistle and Italian gorgonzola into the roll, eaten with a stick of honey.

Yeongwol Salt Bread stands directly across from Yeongwol station, in the row of dasulgi soup houses. It sells five or six kinds of salt roll, one salt-butter cookie, coffee, and ice cream — that is the whole shop. The ground floor is for baking and paying and is cramped; a steep staircase leads to a small café upstairs, though most people carry their bread away. A sign says the gondre thistle and the waxy corn are grown in Yeongwol, the sea salt and rice flour Korean, and the gondre-and-gorgonzola roll is the one you cannot buy elsewhere. The shop asks you not to seal the bag while the bread is hot: let it cool, or it turns chewy. The posts we read run from 8 August to 26 September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. This shop writes where its flour and its greens come from on the wall, and then puts it in the names. Five writers copy the sign down: unsprayed gondre thistle and waxy corn grown in Yeongwol, Korean sea salt and rice flour, Italian gorgonzola, French butter. So the board reads like a map — *Yeongwol gondre gorgonzola*, *Gangwon waxy corn* — and travellers go for those lines first. Four say plainly that they came because they had never heard of thistle in a salt roll and had to know.
  2. Sometimes there is a queue and sometimes there is none, and the hour decides it. The posts disagree only because they came at different times. The five who found no line came on a weekday morning — a Friday before noon, a Monday at 12:20, a weekday at 11:30 — or on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Those who queued came at weekends and over holidays: twenty minutes, thirty minutes, an hour, and one who spent twenty minutes to order and twenty more to collect, forty in all. Three note that paying is not the end of it — the bread itself takes another ten to twenty minutes, which caught one writer out entirely. Four say simply: come at opening.
  3. You buy downstairs and eat upstairs. Thirteen writers mention the seating on the second floor; four actually sat in it — the rest looked, then took their bag and left. Eight call the ground floor cramped, oven and till and nothing else, and one notes that people therefore wait outside on the pavement. Upstairs there is a lavatory (one writer), air conditioning (one), and chairs and a mirror for the wait (four). One writer calls the staircase steep.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is dambaek sogeumppang (담백 소금빵) — 21 of 25 posts.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

Parking

1 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 25 posts

Only one writer actually parked. Twenty-odd posts carry a line at the top — *parking: use the station car park* — but that is copied information, and just one person describes doing it: there is nowhere to leave a car, so you pull up on the road and dash in, or, if the queue is long, park at Yeongwol station and walk (a Sunday afternoon in August 2026). One other says only that she left her car on the roadside in front of the soup house next door. Nobody reports a car park belonging to the shop. Two writers came by train instead and walked across from the station opposite.

Getting there

Map showing where Yeongwol Sogeumppang is

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Second floor13 of 25 posts
Toilet inside1 of 25 posts

We do not know whether you can get in. In twenty-seven first-hand posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, threshold, ramp and step do not appear even once. One writer calls the staircase to the seating steep, so the upper floor looks to be stairs only — but nobody looked at the doorway on the ground floor, and nobody mentions a lift. This is not "there is no step"; it is "no one wrote it down." If it matters, ring the shop.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • What we could not count, and where the posts disagree. (1) Twenty posts give the hours and nineteen agree: Monday to Saturday 09:00–17:00, opening an hour earlier at 08:00 on Sundays. One post, from 13 August 2026, says they close at 19:00 instead. Not one post mentions a closing day. (2) Only one writer mentions a lavatory — upstairs, and nothing about whether it is shared. (3) Prices did not move between late July and late September (₩3,000 plain, ₩3,500 gondre); the only disagreement is the soboro roll, ₩3,800 in four posts and ₩3,500 in one. (4) One writer wrote about hygiene: at a weekend peak in August 2026 she saw fruit flies and small insects gathering around the display case. It is one post in twenty-seven, and we cannot tell you whether it was that hour or every hour. (5) No post declares a sponsorship. One writer did accept the iced americano the shop gives for writing a review on the spot, and eight state that they paid their own way.
