Ajae Buldakbal

아재불닭발 Ajae is a familiar word for a middle-aged man; bul is fire and dakbal is chicken feet. The full sign reads Ajae Buldakbal & Odolppyeo, Chuncheon branch — odolppyeo being pork cartilage.

Data as of · Published ·

Ajae Buldakbal is a chicken-feet drinking house on the ground floor of the eating alley behind the Ilseong apartments in Toegye-dong, Chuncheon, a 5–10 minute walk from Namchuncheon station. It opens at five in the afternoon and closes at two in the morning (last order 1:30), and eight posts say it never takes a day off. It is licensed as a soju house, and twenty-eight of twenty-nine posts either drank or say the food pulls the drink along. The line that recurs most is 'no capsaicin' — ten posts: the heat is built from chilli powder alone. Hence the phrasing that follows it — hot in a way that does not burn the stomach, clean rather than manufactured. There are two grades, middle and hot (one post states it outright), and three asked for something milder still. You choose twice. First grilled or in broth — thirteen took grilled, fourteen the broth, near enough an even split. Then the bone: fifteen boneless, seven 'tulip', three whole. Four explain that a tulip has the toe bones removed and the stem bone left to hold. People order the sets. ₩6,000 adds roe rice balls and steamed egg — seventeen did that — and the two-dish set with the pork cartilage is ₩38,000 (eight). Those two sides draw the most consistent praise in the whole file, and both are used for the same purpose: putting out the chilli. Three things come free: puffed corn, chilled bean-sprout soup, and pickled radish wraps (twenty-two posts). Two say the soup is served cold on purpose, and the corn alone gets nine posts. Eleven mention the house mayonnaise dip. In good weather people eat outside, on a strip of artificial grass — ten posts. Eleven say the delivery orders never stop, two of them having ordered in themselves. The owner has painted cartoon characters by the door, with a line asking someone to buy the narrator some chicken feet; six posts copy it out.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. How hot it is depends on the eater, but the fault line is clear. The four who ordered it hot agree it is fierce — one pair, who think themselves hardened, were finished off by the end, lips numb and noses running; another found it beyond Shin Ramyun or green chillies. On the middle grade the posts split evenly. Four found it plenty hot; five found it gentle enough to eat without worry. The comparisons offered are Shin Ramyun (one) and Buldak noodles (two). One post wanted more — a November 2025 writer had come for something savagely hot and did not get it. A January 2026 writer found the standard grade pleasantly warm. Three asked for it milder and all three were accommodated, though one who asked for a notch below middle still found it hotter than she expected.
  2. There are tables outside — ten posts, and they call it a 'yajang'. Three mention the artificial grass laid down at the entrance. But not one post ate out there. Four explain why they went in: it was too cold; they wanted the food hot; one of them was tired and the other had worked late. An October 2024 post found the outside tables already full, and another from the same month was not even sure eating outside was allowed. We have no account from anyone who sat there.
  3. What comes free takes up a fair share of the writing about this place: puffed corn, chilled bean-sprout soup and pickled radish, in twenty-two posts. Two say the soup is cold deliberately. One nearly set it on the burner and was thankful she did not — cold, it is what rescues you from the chilli. Three say the soup alone would carry a bottle of soju. The puffed corn alone gets nine posts — one suspected it had been fried that day and wanted to take some home; another asked for refill after refill; a third reckons that with corn on the table the drinking snack is already sorted. Two asked for a refill (corn in one post, radish in the other).
  4. The delivery trade is more visible than the room — eleven posts. One ate with no other table occupied while riders came and went continuously; another watched them all evening; a third found the place busy with both on a Sunday. One post (the sponsored one) concludes you should come in rather than order in. Three concluded the opposite and meant to order delivery next time. Takeaway exists too — four mention it, one noting a discount for collection. One names the delivery app used.
  5. Three posts say where the coats and bags go, and all three point at the chairs: storage under the round stools, which one writer valued because the broth splashes, and which another praised for having a back as well as a box beneath it. Six list what is already on the table: plastic gloves, wooden chopsticks, paper cups, tissues, a bin for the bones, and the menu. Two note the gloves are left out by the boxful rather than handed over one at a time, and two mention aprons.
  6. People walk from Namchuncheon station — nine posts name it. The walk, though, is given as 5 minutes by one, 7 by another and 10 by two more, and only one names an exit (Exit 1). One post tells you to come by public transport (January 2025), on the grounds that the place has no car park of its own. One notes the intercity bus terminal is also close. The alley is named consistently: the eating alley by the Ilseong apartments in Toegye-dong (seven posts), or simply the Namchuncheon station eating alley (three).

Getting inside

Toilet inside3 of 28 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 28 posts read)

On floors, the address is all there is. The shop is on the ground floor at 24 Umuk-gil 74beon-gil, and in twenty-nine posts nobody describes an upstairs room or a basement. One writer mentions the ground floor only in passing, while explaining where to park. No one counts steps or mentions a lift. Size, they do give: seven or eight tables (three posts), eight or nine (one), nine or ten seats (one), and a capacity of fifty (one). Four note a mix of round tables and tables for four.

Nobody writes about the doorway or about wheelchairs and pushchairs. In twenty-nine posts there is not one line on whether there is a step at the door, how wide it is, or whether a wheelchair or a pram could get in. The address is a ground floor and the outside tables sit on artificial grass in front of it, but nothing says what lies between that grass and the door. Three posts do say the lavatory is inside, so it means no trip outdoors — and one says it is a single unisex cubicle. Its width, and any step, go unmentioned. No post mentions a high chair or a baby-changing table. Anyone who needs to know should ring: 033-257-9991.

Three posts say the lavatory is inside, so you do not have to go out for it, and one adds that it was kept clean. But it is a single unisex cubicle — and only one post says so. An April 2025 writer thought the room looked rather like a kitchen and found the single shared cubicle inconvenient. Hers is the only complaint about it here; the other twenty-eight say nothing about cubicles or separate facilities.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Nobody writes about queuing. All twenty-nine have to say about seats is this: three found the room empty (first in at opening; an early arrival on a snowy day picking any table; one with no other table occupied), three watched it fill while they ate (one reckoning Friday or Saturday would be full), and one found the outside tables already taken. So when you would have to wait, nobody says. Three mention that you can book — one specifying the Naver booking page — but none of them booked. The place runs from five in the afternoon to two in the morning, and the visits described are mostly early evening or late.
  • One post declares a sponsorship: a January 2025 writer opens by saying she came as part of a tasting panel and promises to write honestly anyway. Three things appear only in that post — that the lavatory is indoors, that there is a call bell at the table, and that they will add cheese to your plate mid-meal. Of the other twenty-eight, three state outright that they paid, and twenty-five do not say. That the praise runs one way is worth recording plainly. Only three posts contain a complaint: the broth was not as hot as hoped (November 2025), the single unisex lavatory (April 2025), and a regret about ordering the pork cartilage mild (April 2025). Two more regret ordering the hot grade — their own choice rather than the shop's doing. The posts are unevenly spread in time. Twenty-five of the twenty-nine fall in the six months between October 2024 and April 2025; after that there is one each in September and November 2025 and January 2026. Only four voices speak for anything after spring 2025, so that is what we have to go on for how the place is now.
