Gangwon Yangeojang Hoetjip

강원양어장횟집 Yangeojang means a fish farm and hoetjip a raw-fish restaurant — the house raises its own trout in a greenhouse farm right beside the dining room.

Compiled from 18 blog posts read in fullSources →

A trout specialist on Hwaaksan-ro in Sanae-myeon, Hwacheon, right beside Samil Valley. The trout are raised in a greenhouse fish farm next to the dining room. The menu is just raw trout, baked trout and whole-trout stew; a raw trout for two costs 45,000 won. You mix the slices into shredded cabbage with soybean powder and chili sauce, and a spicy stew made from the bones arrives as you finish. Many posts end with a dip in the stream behind the restaurant. We read 30 posts from December 2024 to October 2026, 19 of them from people who ate there.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The most repeated point is that this freshwater fish doesn't smell. Ten of the 19 posts from diners said there was no muddy or fishy taste, and none said otherwise. One post noticed a fishy smell from the baked trout while photographing it, then found none when eating.
  2. Seating is split between a floor-seating room and a room with chairs; five posts described both. One said the area by the entrance is shoes-off, cross-legged seating, and one mentioned a private room. A July 2025 post found the chair tables almost all reserved, and another saw many reservation guests. Bookings are by phone.
  3. Expect a wait at lunch and on weekends. Three posts waited. One, on a July 2025 weekend, found the car park full, wrote down a waiting number, went to the stream and got the fish after more than an hour. An August 2025 post waited a long time even on a weekday, and a September 2026 post said lunch is packed every day, so the writer goes around 2 p.m. One more post arrived well after lunch and found it mostly empty.
  4. Mostly a family place: six posts came with family, two with friends, one as a couple. Two brought children; one group of six adults and three kids ordered 3 kg of trout. Seven posts had been before, one for about 20 years.

Posts saying you can park7 of 18 posts

There is a car park in front; seven posts parked there and five called it large. One mentioned a second lot a little farther up the road when the first fills, and one found it full on a July 2025 weekend.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 2 (of 18 posts read)

No post says which floor the dining room is on or whether there are stairs. That doesn't mean it's at street level, only that nobody wrote it down.

Nobody mentioned a step at the entrance or wheelchair or stroller access. One post only notes that the seating by the entrance is shoes-off floor seating.

The toilet is in a separate building outside; two posts said so, one adding that it is always clean. Whether it is split by gender appears only in copied directory listings, which we don't count.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 10 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2025-12-312 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The baked trout went up: 35,000 won in a December 2024 post, 40,000 won in May 2025 and July 2026 posts. An October 2026 directory still showing 35,000 is copying old data. The whole-trout stew is split, 40,000 won in two posts and 45,000 in one. Raw trout has held at 45,000 won in every post since December 2024, though one writer remembers it in the 20,000s years ago. The restaurant has not moved.
  • A meal is roughly one 45,000-won trout per two people. Two posts said one fish suits two and one and a half suits three; one party of five shared two, and four adults found two too much. No post called it expensive; one called it quite reasonable. Noodle and dough add-ins are 2,000 won, rice 1,000 won.
  • Every post agrees it opens at 11:00. Eight say it closes at 22:00 and two (December 2024) say 21:40. Last order is 19:40 in five posts and 20:00 in two. Seven posts list closing days as the first and third Monday of each month. Most of this is copied from the listing, so order before about 7:30 p.m. to be safe.
  • The phone number, 033-441-1034, is the same in over a dozen posts, and bookings are by phone. But an August 2025 post couldn't get through either the day before or the day of in peak season; arriving an hour late for a takeout order, the writer found it had gone to another table and waited 30 more minutes.
  • No post explains how to get there by bus or train. Four drove, 1 hour 40 minutes to 3 hours from the Seoul area, and one warned that the winding road gets slippery in winter.
  • We didn't count eight directory-style lists and one valley guide that just copy listing data; six of them share the same "best 10" template. One August 2026 post states it was produced with support from the Korea Tourism Organization's student reporter program.
