Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap
연화마을 꼬막비빔밥 Yeonhwa-maeul means 'lotus village' — the restaurant sits in Pungho village beside lotus fields that bloom each summer; kkomak bibimbap is rice mixed with seasoned cockles.

A cockle-bibimbap and cold raw-fish soup (mulhoe) restaurant in Pungho village, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung, right beside the lotus fields. Almost everyone orders a set: two-person (medium bibimbap + one mulhoe) 48,000 won, three-person 65,000, four-person 72,000, with a spread of side dishes, seaweed soup, laver and perilla leaves for wrapping, and noodles for the mulhoe. Of the 24 posts by people who went, 17 ordered the two-person set. It is out in the countryside, so people drive, and several posts mention a large hall full of group bookings. We read 30 posts dated 20 July to 27 October 2026: 24 visits, 2 entries in multi-restaurant lists, and 4 set aside as not about this place. TV segments from 2016–2019 introduced it as a lotus-dish restaurant serving baeksuk and lotus-leaf rice.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- Warm lotus-leaf tea sits by the entrance or counter for anyone to pour; 13 posts drank it, describing it as free and self-serve. Some posts also found after-meal coffee set out, and one said lotus tea and leaves were for sale to take home.
- 20 posts said the portions are large. In one, the owner talked a party of three out of the three-person set because the servings are big; in another, two people finished the two-person set feeling ready to burst. One called the medium bibimbap enough for three.
- 10 posts said the owner was kind — greeting guests at the door and seeing them off, suggesting the seaweed pickle as a topping, and in one case recommending the cheaper two-person set to a party of three.
- 15 posts said the hall is spacious, with generous gaps between tables; several found group bookings or village elders eating together, and one watched staff lay and cover tables in advance for a lunchtime group.
3 more
- Two posts said you take your shoes off to enter; one compared it to visiting a grandmother's house.
- Shoes off or not, you do not sit on the floor: 5 posts described regular tables and chairs, and none mentioned floor seating.
- 7 posts went with family — parents, a mother, a baby, a grandmother. One grandmother had three bowls of the mulhoe broth; one couple came back with their baby after first visiting while pregnant.

Parking is not a concern. 18 posts parked in front of the restaurant, and 16 of them said the lot was large — 'bigger than I expected', 'fine even for a beginner driver'. One post parked easily on a day with group bookings, and one said even tour buses can park.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.
From the station
0 posts say it is walkable from the station.
Getting inside
Nobody said which floor it is on or whether there are stairs; one post only called it a standalone building. That means no one wrote about it, not that there are none.
No one wrote about a step at the entrance or wheelchair or stroller access. We only know there is a spot where you remove your shoes.
No one described the restroom from experience. One post's info block says it is inside, but that was copied from the listing, so we did not count it.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 26 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Heat is disputed: 5 posts found it not spicy, 3 found it noticeably hot from the green chilies, and 2 landed in between. Many posts repeat that the chilies can be left out on request, but that is the restaurant's own line, so we did not count it.
- No post reported waiting. 3 walked straight in (one found the room empty), and 1 said group bookings filled the tables so that arriving a little later would have meant no seat. Several posts saw group bookings, so lunchtime may differ.
- No post arrived by bus or train. One writer recommended it for people with a car rather than those on foot. The near-identical line 'car or taxi rather than public transport' in several posts reads as the restaurant's own copy, so we did not count it.
- Only one post went with a friend.
- All opening hours come from copied info blocks. Of 15 posts, 13 give 10:30–20:00; one says it opens at 10:00 and one says it closes at 21:00. Last order 19:00 appears in 10 and Monday closing in 11, though one post says 'every day'. A list post's old tourism data (11:00–21:00, closed Tuesdays) looks outdated.
- Set prices agree across posts, but a few list different à la carte prices: one gives the bibimbap at 30,000/55,000 won, one lists cockle muchim at 50,000 won a plate (two others say 30,000), and the July post's menu had no three-person set. For a full meal, one couple paid 51,000 won for the two-person set plus a cider and extra rice.
- The phone number 0507-1349-0979 comes from copied info blocks in many posts (033-644-0979 in one list post looks old). One family called ahead before bringing a baby and found a high chair set out; 'reservations available' otherwise appears only in copied blocks.
- A shared template shows through. Distance lines like 'Gangneung Station 13 minutes' appear in 8 posts, and the claim that the owner, a certified Korean and Western cook, makes the side dishes from home-grown produce appears in 8, almost word for word; lines about adding sea squirt and abalone at the expense of margin, and openings contrasting famous places with long waits and hard parking, also recur. One post disclosed sponsorship; the rest say nothing. We treated these lines as the restaurant's own claims and did not count them.
- The restaurant appears to have been a lotus-dish place earlier: a TV list copied in one post shows lotus duck baeksuk and lotus-leaf rice (2016) and lotus neungi chicken baeksuk (2019), and a list post repeats tourism data naming baeksuk and samgyetang. A writer who first came two years ago already ate the mulhoe then, so the switch to cockles and mulhoe happened before that, but we do not know exactly when.
