Gohyangchon Junghwa Yori

고향촌중화요리 Gohyangchon means 'hometown village', and junghwa yori means Chinese cooking — one blogger first took it for a Korean restaurant because of the name.

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

Gohyangchon is an old-style Chinese-Korean restaurant on Heonhwa-ro in Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung, a short walk from Jeongdongjin Station and the local post office. People come for jjajangmyeon, jjamppong and sweet-and-sour pork; in 2025 posts the prices were 7,000 won for jjajangmyeon, 9,000 for jjamppong, 10,000 for the extra-spicy jjamppong and 20,000 for a small tangsuyuk. You take your shoes off at the door and fetch side dishes from a self-serve bar. Many writers stopped in during the Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival or a sunrise trip. We read 30 posts dated November 2024 to October 2026; 28 describe actually eating here. One was set aside because it was a café review that only linked to this place, and one writer found it closed on the day they went.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The thing people mention most is how thick the pork in the tangsuyuk is — six posts say so, and one estimated the pieces at about 1.5 cm a side, 'almost thick enough to need a knife'. Several posts note the sauce comes already poured over; one writer asked for it on the side and got it.
  2. How hot it is depends on what you order. Seven posts call it spicy, one says the regular jjamppong had 'zero heat', and one called it just slightly spicy. The person who had the extra-spicy jjamppong put it just under Buldak-noodle heat; the one who found the regular version mild suggested ordering the spicy one if you like heat. One diner asked for an off-menu spicy jjamppong-bap and got it.
  3. Four posts say you take your shoes off to go in. One described it as a classic old Chinese-restaurant interior; a winter visitor said the warm floor made them not want to leave.
  4. Side dishes are self-serve: five posts mention a bar with pickled radish, raw onion, black-bean paste and kimchi that you help yourself to. Posts also mention plates, forks and scissors at the station, and vinegar, soy sauce and chili flakes on every table.
3 more
  1. No one called it expensive; four posts describe the prices as cheap or reasonable — one pair ate for under 20,000 won.
  2. It's walkable from Jeongdongjin Station: three posts describe arriving by train and walking over. One post with directions says it's about 7–10 minutes on foot from exit 1 toward Heonhwa-ro.
  3. Nine posts went with friends, three with family, three alone, one with a partner and one as a group of film-festival volunteers. The three family posts include a toddler's first jjajangmyeon and a parent sharing a large portion with a grade-school daughter; one post notes high chairs are available.

From the station

It's walkable from Jeongdongjin Station: three posts describe arriving by train and walking over. One post with directions says it's about 7–10 minutes on foot from exit 1 toward Heonhwa-ro.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)

Only one post mentions the floor: it's on the ground floor of a brick building.

No one wrote about a step at the entrance or wheelchair or stroller access — only that you remove your shoes. That doesn't mean there's a barrier; nobody said.

No post says whether the restroom is inside or whether it's separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Shoes come off, but whether you sit on the floor is disputed: one post says it is floor seating, another says it is a shoes-off hall with regular tables, and a third counted ten four-person tables. We can't tell from the posts whether the seating is mixed or has changed.
  • Prices look to have gone up once. Posts from January and June 2025 list the small tangsuyuk at 20,000 won; a February 2026 post lists it at 22,000 won. Jjajangmyeon stayed at 7,000 won from January 2025 through February 2026. No post after February 2026 gives prices, so we don't know what a meal costs now.
  • Waits vary. One post describes a real wait: on a film-festival Saturday at 11:50 the place was full and they were told it would be an hour, so they gave up and came back at opening the next day. Another writer arrived around 2 p.m. on the last day of a holiday weekend and found it empty. A festival-weekend post says they walked in at 10:30 and it filled up within half an hour. Nobody reported on weekday lunch waits.
  • One October 2025 post says ganjjajang could only be ordered for two or more. No other post confirms it, but solo diners may not be able to get it.
  • Posts agree it closes at 6 p.m. and is closed Mondays (six posts say so). Opening time varies: five posts say 11 a.m., two say 10, and three say 10:30 on weekends or Sundays. Three give a 5:30 p.m. last order. Most of these are copied listing blocks. Some say it closes early when ingredients run out, and one writer found it shut on a day in early September 2025 and ate elsewhere.
  • Two posts list the phone number, 033-644-5232. Nobody says whether it takes reservations. Posts do mention takeout and local delivery.
