Royal Culture Festival

궁중문화축전

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

Twice a year Seoul turns its royal palaces into a stage. For five days each autumn, Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung and the Jongmyo Shrine fill with court music, night openings, re-enacted royal processions and craft workshops. Most of it costs nothing beyond palace admission, and palaces let you in free if you are wearing hanbok. Two things catch people out: the best evening events are booked through Korean ticketing sites and go fast, and the Gyeongbokgung side gets very crowded. We read Korean blog posts from people who went to the last three autumn editions (2023, 2024 and 2025) to find out what it is actually like.

What 30 visitors said

We searched Naver, the blog platform most Koreans use, for posts about each autumn edition (22 for 2023, 40 for 2024, 34 for 2025), read every one to the end, kept only people who actually went that year, and took ten per year. Sponsored or invited posts were dropped, and no writer is counted twice. Six of the 2023 posts are by festival volunteers — there were few ordinary visitors writing that year. Every number below counts the posts that mentioned something. Someone who did not mention a thing is not counted as disagreeing.

Who goes, and when

Almost nobody went alone; friends and families made up most of the visits we could place. Parents with children tended to pick sit-down or collect-everything activities — a royal tea-and-sweets session, the stamp tour across the palaces. Most people went after dark. The evening programmes at Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung are the core of the festival. The two morning visits were both pre-booked events. In 2024 the festival opened on Hangul Day, a public holiday, and in 2025 it overlapped with the end of the Chuseok holiday, so many visits fell on days when the whole city was off work.

Visiting from abroad

You will not be the only visitor from abroad. Nearly every Korean writer who mentioned foreigners said there were a lot of them — one was surprised there seemed to be more foreign visitors than Koreans. Language support is patchy. The early-morning Changdeokgung walk ran a separate English-language session; volunteers at Gyeongbokgung gave directions in English; but at Jongmyo, one writer found that the usual foreign-language tours were suspended during the festival. For 2026 the organisers list two programmes reserved for foreign visitors — the evening Hanbok Banquet at Gyeongbokgung and the early-morning garden walk — so if you want something guided, book those rather than the Korean-only sessions.

Weather and crowds

Days in mid-October can be warm, but the evenings turn cold, and that is the single thing people mentioned most about the weather. A couple found the afternoon sun hot, so if you plan to stay from day into night, bring a layer you can add. Four writers had rain on the day they went; rain cancelled the outdoor games area and shortened the royal procession. More than half the posts call it crowded and none call it quiet. In 2024 and 2025 the festival overlapped with public holidays, and several people describe the Gyeongbokgung entry line stretching back to Gwanghwamun Gate.

Getting there and access

The evening events at Gyeongbokgung do not use the main gate. You go in at Sinmumun, the north gate behind the palace, which is a 10–20 minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) — two writers found that further than expected, and one took bus 7012 to the Hyoja-dong stop instead. Expect a queue outside that gate: people waited anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Taxis and the subway are easier than driving; those who drove used the Gyeongbokgung car park (₩3,000 for the first hour) or the Sejong-ro public car park. Between palaces people walked, and took a bus for the longer hops such as Jongmyo to Deoksugung.

Only one post mentions wheelchairs at all, and it is a warning: the early-morning walk through the Changdeokgung rear garden told participants it was not suitable for wheelchairs because the paths are unpaved. Nobody wrote about step-free routes at the other palaces. That is a gap in what we know, not a sign that it is fine — palace courtyards are mostly uneven stone and packed earth, and the evening events are in the dark. Toilets exist inside every palace but can be a long walk; at one evening event the portable toilets had a long line and staff sent people to the palace toilets instead.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

Restoration work at the front of Gyeongbokgung pushed the evening entrance round to the north gate, and it has stayed there since. The palace concerts — ballet set to court music, a piano set by Yang Bang-ean — were the most praised. Several nights were cold and some were wet. Six of our ten posts for this year come from volunteers.

Autumn 2024

The festival opened on a public holiday. Many used the palace pass (₩10,000, with ₩3,000 of transport credit) to hop between palaces, and the light show on the Changgyeonggung pond and an outdoor musical drew the warmest reviews. It was also the year with the most complaints about queues and confusing directions.

Autumn 2025

It overlapped with the end of the Chuseok holiday, when palaces were free to enter, and Gyeongbokgung was packed. The palace pass came as a traditional knotted pendant (norigae), and several families completed the stamp tour of all five sites. For the evening Hanbok Banquet people were queuing an hour before the doors opened.

Tips from people who went

  • Leave Gyeongbokgung for last, or go first thing in the morning — it gets busier as the day goes on
  • Bring a warm layer for the evening, and insect repellent
  • Booked events check ID at the door — carry your passport
  • At the Hanbok Banquet you will stand for a long time; if photos are the point, head to the photo spots as soon as you are in
  • The palace pass gets you into the faster hanbok line
  • Moonlight tours at Changdeokgung are by lottery; if you miss out, watch for returned tickets
  • Wear comfortable shoes — you will walk between palaces
