Taehwajang

태화장 Taehwajang is written 泰華莊 on the sign — 'great', 'China/splendour' and 'manor house'; posts say the place opened in 1954 as Cheonhwagak and took this name in 1971.

An old Chinese restaurant occupying an entire three-storey building in the Jeong-dong backstreets, five to ten minutes' walk from exit 3 of Daejeon Station. The menu runs from 7,000-won jjajangmyeon and 8,000-won jjamppong to banquet dishes and set menus from 25,000 won a head, but what people actually come for is the off-menu menbosha (50,000 won for 13–14 pieces) — 18 of the 23 diners ordered it. It is a place for sharing dishes on lazy-Susan tables, in the hall or in private rooms. We read 30 posts dated 8 September to 23 October 2026; 23 describe an actual visit. The other 7 are multi-restaurant lists or rewrites of TV and map information, and we did not count them.

Rows without a count: 3 of 15 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect to wait at weekends. Nine posts say there was a queue and four say there wasn't. Recorded waits: 15 minutes on a Saturday at noon after registering on the Tabling kiosk at the door (46 parties ahead), 30 minutes at a weekend lunch, and 10 minutes loitering outside at 7:30 on a Saturday evening after the list had already closed. One weekend visitor got in via remote queueing near 2 pm and saw entry close minutes later; another was told the weekend dinner slots had filled by lunchtime. The four no-wait visits were a weekday noon, a weekday opening, 7 pm on a Saturday, and straight after the weekend afternoon break. Posts say remote queueing opens at 12:00 for lunch and 17:30 for dinner.
  2. There is a separate waiting room. Six posts mention it: a space signed as a waiting room beside the car park, plenty of chairs, strong air-conditioning in summer and heating in winter.
  3. Twelve posts say portions are large. A single menbosha is 'the size of my fist', and two people won't finish a plate — six posts took leftovers home, with sauce packed too. Because menbosha comes in only one size, several posts suggest going with three or four people.
  4. Five diners ordered the gogi twigim, fried pork eaten with salt instead of sauce. Six posts call the frying crisp — the pork, the sauce-on-the-side tangsuyuk and the house-made dumplings.
2 more
  1. Six posts went with friends and six with family. Four were groups of four, seven or ten — one booked a room for ten a week ahead. Two brought children, and one noticed high chairs.
  2. Three posts walked from Daejeon Station: about 500 m from exit 3, five to ten minutes on foot.

Posts saying you can park13 of 23 posts

Thirteen posts mention parking: a dedicated car park right beside the building, with an attendant according to two posts and valet parking according to one. It fills up — one weekday visitor arriving just before noon found it nearly full, another called it congested. One post (11 October 2026) listed alley or public parking instead.

Getting inside

Second floor9 of 23 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 23 posts read)

It isn't just the ground-floor hall. Nine posts ate upstairs or describe the upper floors: the third floor is a banquet-style room full of round lazy-Susan tables (one post saw a stage), and the second floor seemed reserved mostly for booked groups. One post counted about fifteen four-seat tables in the ground-floor hall, and one sat at a free ground-floor table. Nobody said whether you reach the upper floors by stairs or lift.

Nobody wrote about a step at the entrance, wheelchair or pram access, or a lift to the upper floors. That means we don't know, not that there isn't one.

On toilets we only have a copied info block saying 'inside' and one post calling them pleasant. No one described where they are or whether they are separated by gender, so we counted nothing.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 7 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-122 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Opinions on price split. Six posts call it good value, three call it expensive, and four hesitate and land nowhere ('pricey, but worth it'). The 'expensive' comments are almost all about the 50,000-won menbosha; the 'good value' ones are about the noodle dishes and the size of the set courses. One pair paid 77,000 won for menbosha, jjamppong, sacheon noodles and a bottle of baijiu. Individual prices also differ slightly between posts — dumplings mostly 9,000 won but 7,000 in one, japchae and gogi twigim 22,000 or 23,000 (the latter on a September 2026 receipt), japtangbap 18,000 or 17,000 — and we can't tell whether that reflects price changes or copying errors.
  • Whether the menbosha gets greasy is disputed: two posts say it becomes cloying, three say it isn't oily at all. Several suggest cutting it with jjamppong broth or the chilli sauce served alongside.
  • Opening hours are consistent across posts: 11:30–21:00 in 14 posts, a 15:00–17:00 break in 12, and closed on the first and third Monday of each month in 14. Three say Sundays close at 20:30. One gives the break as 14:00–17:00 and one gives hours of 11:00–20:30. Most of these are copied from map listings, so check before going.
  • Fourteen posts give the same phone number, 042-256-2407. On reservations: one family booked a room for ten a week ahead, another post saw a busy reservation board, and one copied note says phone bookings are for four or more. One post warns the phone can be hard to get through at peak times.
