Yongyong Seonsaeng Cheongju Jiwell Bokdae
용용선생 청주지웰복대점 A Hong Kong-styled Chinese drinking house on the Jiwell City eating lane, known for a volcano-shaped mala hotpot and sorghum-spirit highballs.
Data as of · Published ·
Yongyong Seonsaeng's Jiwell Bokdae branch is a Hong-Kong-styled Chinese drinking house on the ground floor of the eating lane behind Jiwell City in Cheongju, right beside Solbat Middle School. It is a national chain with three branches in Cheongju alone. Doors at five in the evening, closing at two in the morning — three on Fridays and Saturdays — and no lunch. Mala hotpots and fried Chinese dishes to drink sorghum spirit over, which is why most of these posts are somebody's first or second stop of an evening rather than dinner. Ten writers describe the room as red and dark; six of them reach for Hong Kong cinema, one simply says it is properly dark, and one that the lighting left her squinting. There are no tablets on the tables — you order by QR code from your phone. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- Book through Naver and they put something on the table for each of you. Two writers record it: one relays that a booking brings either condensed-milk buns or a mala dumpling per head, and the other actually did it and got the dumplings, counted out to the size of her party. The one who chose the buns expected two for two people and was given three. Only these two mention booking at all; the other twenty-two say nothing about it, and one notes that you simply sit wherever you like. Since the floor is reported to fill after eight, a group arriving late loses nothing by ringing ahead.
- Write a review and they give you something — and you should know that while reading this page. Four posts describe it: bring your receipt and get a serving; post the receipt on Naver and a drink comes free; take part and get a drink, says one who paid for everything else and tells you to claim yours; and one writer who filed two receipt reviews and was handed four condensed-milk buns. She actually received them. This is not blog sponsorship but Naver's receipt reviews, and not one of the twenty-four posts we read declares a sponsorship. Still, this is a restaurant that pays for good notices — keep it in mind when you look at its star rating.
- The thing written about most often here is not the signature dish but what comes free. Twelve posts record it and all twelve say the same two things: pickled radish and peanuts — near enough the same number as the fourteen who ordered the volcano hotpot. Three find the peanuts salty enough to keep reaching for; one calls them human feed, another says you can drink on them until the food arrives. One notes that they come already shelled. Since two writers say the wait for the hotpot to boil feels long, that is probably the point of them. One writer mentions that the water comes in a paper cup.
- Eight posts call the room roomy and none calls it cramped. Six of the eight give the same reason: the group tables. One describes railed-off bays along the sides, with a party actually sitting in one; another, seats partitioned off from the rest; a third, group seating generous enough for a work dinner. Two say the tables are far enough apart that you never think about the next one, and one found the chairs and tables comfortable. Six of the twenty-four visits were parties or work dinners and five were friends — not one writer came alone. But nobody counts the seats, and nobody says how many a group table holds.
- Seven writers had been before; five were there for the first time. The returners are specific about it: two years since the last visit; the same two dishes every single time; the hotpot ordered before anything else, every time; and one who simply says she ended up at Yongyong Seonsaeng again. Three more say they will be back. One switched branches — the Yullyang branch she used to go to closed, and she found this one when a meeting brought her to Jiwell City; another had been to the branch across town and came here because it existed. Since regulars of two years and more are still writing, and since one post notes that restaurants in this lane turn over fast, it reads as a place that has lasted.
- People come here for mala, and they cannot agree on how hot it is. Three call it hot, three say it was milder than they expected. Of the same volcano hotpot, one writer reports the Sichuan-pepper numbness almost absent and the dish a fine place to start; another warns off anyone who dislikes mala. What seems to decide it is how much of the paste on top you stir in — two writers lifted some off or mixed in only half, and one of those says half makes it manageable for a beginner. A writer who had avoided the place for years because she is weak with chilli ordered the mala rice-cake braise and came away asking whether she had become an expert. It is adjustable; do not be put off.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | 1 of 22 posts |

| Toilet inside | 3 of 22 posts |
The posts do not quite agree about floors. The registered address and the check-in line a dozen writers copied both say ground floor, 95 Jinjae-ro. But one September 2026 post says: "when I photographed the room I only got the ground floor — looking back, there was a first floor up as well." Whether that upper floor belongs to this restaurant or to something else in the building, how you reach it, whether anyone sits up there — that post does not say, and neither does any other. The remaining twenty-three describe the ground floor only. If you are a large group wanting the upstairs, ask first.
Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. Across all twenty-four, the words for ramp, threshold, step and wheelchair never appear. What is certain is that the registered address is the ground floor, and that eight writers describe the room as roomy with space between the tables — but that is about the inside, and whether there is a step at the door is a different question. Do not read "ground floor" as an answer. Ring and ask if it matters.
Three posts put the toilet inside the restaurant. One found it inside and very clean; another lists it as the thing women check before a late night out, and was glad not to have to leave the building. In a place that runs to two or three in the morning, that is worth knowing. The third writer, though, got stuck in it — the lock would not open and a member of staff had to let her out; she calls it a failed escape room. One person, one night, and nobody since reports the same. Whether the toilets are separated by sex, how many cubicles there are, whether there is an accessible one — none of the twenty-four says.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 24 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Of the thirty posts that matched, we counted twenty-four. Four are not about this restaurant. One is a sashimi place next door that shares the street address, and says so in the text — it sits right beside Yongyong Seonsaeng. One is a nearby yakiniku restaurant. The other two are the same chain at different branches: a diary carrying a check-in from the Seoul branch, and a review of the other Cheongju branch across town. Two more we did not count as visits. One credits its photographs to the brand's own Naver page, carries no price anywhere, and reports a new dish as being "well received" — which is hearsay, not eating. The other opens by introducing itself as a leak-repair firm, carries one check-in, for its own office in another province, and has neither a price nor a photograph in it. Left in, the pair of them would inflate every figure on this page by a quarter.
- Not one of the twenty-four says how to get here without a car. No bus number, no stop, no walk from a station. What they do give are three ways to find the door: three posts put it right beside Solbat Middle School, several place it on the main run of the Jiwell City eating lane, and the address is 95 Jinjae-ro, ground floor. Cars appear — one writer drove in from Ochang, another's friend took lemonade in a soju glass because she was driving. How you would arrive without one, we do not know.
- Nobody writes about queueing. Three write about the room being full. One arrived to find every table taken and could not photograph the place, so she used the brand's own pictures instead; another simply says it was very busy. The third gives a time: "there was hardly anyone when we arrived, and after eight the floor filled right up." Against that, two writers turned up at five as the doors opened and were the first customers of the night. Whether there is a waiting list, whether waiting works, or whether you simply go elsewhere, nobody says — it reads less like a place with a queue than a place that fills by eight. On booking, see below.
- None of the twenty-four declares a sponsorship. Four say they paid for themselves, one of them photographing the receipt; one says outright that his brother-in-law picked up the bill. The other nineteen say nothing either way. Only ten posts carry a price, though, so while twenty-four tell you what they ate, ten tell you what it cost. And six are week- or month-long diaries in which this restaurant gets a line or two — several places to a post, so we read only what sits around our own check-in. Counted as posts they are real; as accounts of this place they are nearly empty.
