Varnish Burger

바니시버거 Banisi Beogeo Handmade burgers built to order, by the university's main gate

Data as of · Published ·

A burger shop in the lane opposite Cheongju High School, between the main and middle gates of Chungbuk National University — a green sign on the ground floor of a low-rise block. Three posts say it has been in the same spot since 2012. The patties and the sauces are made in-house, and nothing starts cooking until you order. Two burgers carry the place: the mahogany, with its fried egg and bacon, and the birch, under a house meat chilli. ₩3,500 more turns either into a set. Open daily, closed between three and five. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. Nothing is cooked before you order it, and the shop tells you to expect about thirteen minutes. Four posts repeat that figure. Only two writers actually timed it: one at fifteen to twenty minutes, one who found it quicker than warned. There are board games out for the wait — three people mention them, and one says the wait vanishes into a game. The room is small enough, another writes, that you hear the bun and the patty going on from your table. Two expect it to run longer when the place fills.
  2. It is a small room. Four writers count the tables and get five, nine, nine and ten; three note they are mostly two-tops, and one passes on the house rule — two to a two-top, three or more to a four. Only one post calls it roomy, and even that says cosy first. Two mention a mirrored wall hung with small framed photographs. Groups of six and seven have squeezed in, but one writer advises against it for a date or anything that matters — on the grounds that the burgers cannot be eaten tidily.
  3. Six posts say the burger is too tall to pick up. Three note that a knife and fork arrive with it and that cutting works fine; one writer, eating her first handmade burger, found the whole business awkward. Another passes on the trick — leave the skewer in and cut either side of it. Two women report that one set and one burger on its own was right for them, where two sets would not have been, and one chose the junior out of caution. One writer dissents and says the burgers are not that big.
  4. The prices moved. The mahogany and the birch are ₩10,000 in posts from November 2024 and January 2025, and ₩11,000 in May and September 2026. A January 2025 writer catches the shop mid-change: every item had gone up five hundred won and the board had not caught up, so you added it at the till. Even so, not one post calls the place expensive — all five that discuss price say the opposite. One May 2026 writer claims the prices are what they were ten years ago, which our own two years of posts contradict. The same writer remembers a ten-thousand-won burger being a stretch at twenty.
  5. There are board games in the room — three writers saw them, placing them variously at the side and by the entrance. One guesses they are for students lingering over a drink after dinner, and is reminded of burger places in the States. Nobody says what the games are.
  6. One shop, and the person making the food is right there. One writer thinks the owner runs it alone; another met both an owner and a member of staff, so the count varies. A May 2026 visitor fell into conversation with the owner's wife and came away with the line she was given — that the food is made as if for her own child — along with an account of same-day prep and sauces developed in house. One writer, saying it was her first visit, was simply told what most people order.

Parking

2 posts say you can park; 7 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park2 of 24 posts
Posts saying you cannot7 of 24 posts

Driving here is a chore. Of the nine posts that discuss parking, seven say it cannot be done or is hard — no parking, the lane is impossible, hunt the verges nearby, or, in one case, four friends who each drove, each parked somewhere different, and met at the door. The two that say it is possible both counted the spaces: about four beside the building, full when one November 2024 writer arrived, plus perhaps one in front, by a January 2026 account. Four spaces, in other words, and the lane after that — a narrow one, easy to block.

Getting there

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)

Nobody says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across twenty-five posts, no ramp, no threshold, no step. One writer does describe the door: a sign asks you to pull hard, and she reports it means it — a half-hearted pull gets you nowhere. She tells it as a joke, not as a note on who might be unable to open it. Several establish that the shop is on the ground floor and that the two-tops are packed close. Whether there is a step at the door, or room to turn inside, we do not know.

Not one post mentions the lavatory. Nothing in twenty-five of them says whether it is inside, out in the building's corridor, or separated by sex. That the shop is small and rents the ground floor of a residential block is the whole of what we know. This is not a statement that there is none — it is a statement that nobody looked.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • One person, and one only, says how to get here by bus: get off at the Cheongju High School stop in March 2026 and it is a short walk. Nothing else in the corpus touches public transport. Two more writers walked, but both from the university — five minutes from the main or middle gate, one says. No route number, and no count of minutes from the stop.
  • There is a second burger shop of the same name in Cheongju. A May 2026 post describes the other one as a reinterpretation by its own owner; a September 2026 post counts two branches in all. This page is the one near the university's main gate. The other sits across town by a different campus, with a different address, a different menu — its burgers are named for their sauces — and a two o'clock opening. One writer who knows both had until recently only ever been to the other. Check the address before you set off.
  • The opening time is written down two ways. Thirteen posts say half past eleven; two — one from November 2024, one from January 2026 — say noon, and both writers add that they turned up at noon for the opening and found customers already inside, so these are not copied figures. One post closes at half nine rather than nine, and one puts last orders at eight rather than twenty past. Only the three-to-five break is unanimous, in all sixteen posts. Two say there is no regular closing day, and one notes it trades on Sundays. If you are aiming for lunch, it is worth a call.
  • Not one post discloses sponsorship. Nine of the twenty-five insist they paid, one of them adding that it carries no advertising at all. But twenty-five posts are not twenty-five people — one blogger wrote twice. Those two, and two others, are diaries or round-ups covering many places, and in two of them our shop gets a single line: lunch was a burger. We count them as visits and take nothing else from them. One writer says outright that the meal was two or three years ago and she remembers nothing; another that a month had passed and she was no longer sure what she ordered.
  • The number in the posts is not the number on the business register. All ten posts that give one give a Naver proxy line, which dies the day the shop stops paying for it; the registered line appears in none of them. Which is answered today can only be learned by ringing, and we did not ring. The page carries the registered number — if it does not answer, try the one in the posts. Two writers note that the shop posts new items and offers to its Instagram account.
