Pohang Mulhoe
포항물회 A thirty-year-old raw-fish house by Suyeong Paldo market in Busan, where the cold mulhoe arrives with a block of half-frozen dressing to melt over it, a whole abalone inside, and a boiling bone-and-chilli hot pot beside it for nothing.
Data as of · Published ·
Pohang Mulhoe sits in a lane across from Suyeong Paldo market in Busan, one to five minutes on foot from exit 4 at Suyeong station: a raw-fish house built around cold mulhoe and a tank of live wild-caught fish at the door. Eight posts say it has been in this one spot for thirty years. Its namesake bowl does not arrive swimming in broth the way most do — a red block of half-frozen dressing is set beside the fish, and that melting is the broth. A whole abalone goes in, and ordering brings black sesame porridge, thin noodles, rice and a bone-and-chilli hot pot at no extra charge — alternating the icy bowl with the boiling one is half of what people write about here. Half eleven until half ten, closed weekday afternoons between three and half four. Through the summer mulhoe season it does not close at all; out of season it shuts on Tuesdays. People come in summer for the cold bowl and in winter for yellowtail and a sliced platter. The posts we read run from January to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- One bowl of mulhoe brings four more things at no charge — black sesame porridge, thin noodles, rice, and a bone-and-chilli hot pot. Twenty-five posts mention the hot pot and nine of them are frankly startled by it: they ordered a cold dish and a boiling one arrived alongside. Four insist it is no token gesture; six describe real fish on the bone and thick chunks of radish in it. Order the sliced fish and the table goes up a grade. Six writers record a plate of steamed shellfish — abalone, scallop, prawn, surf clam — arriving unbilled, and all six are taken aback by it. Five more found grilled flatfish or saury, conger sashimi, dressed raw fish or grilled toothfish on the table. One regular says two seasonal shellfish come free each visit and the two keep changing; last time it was a stone sea squirt.
- Getting here is easier without a car. Sixteen writers describe the route and, unlike the parking, they do not contradict each other: ninety-odd metres from exit 4 at Suyeong, or a minute, or five; a minute from exit 3; two minutes from the Suyeong Historic Park bus stop. One says plainly that she came without a car and found it at once; another, who drove because she had her mother with her, says the trains would have been better. Even the landmarks agree — opposite the Daiso by the station, the lane across from the McDonald's, over the road from Paldo market. In a place where the parking advice splits five ways, the unanimity here is itself the answer.
- Nobody records waiting, and ten writers record a full room. This place runs on turnover rather than a queue — four say the food came inside five minutes, and one notes that even when the lunch crowd lands the kitchen keeps up. Those who give a time all tell the same story: the woman who arrived at half eleven for the doors opening watched the tables fill by noon; the one who came just after the lunch peak found it comfortably quiet; the one who arrived a little past five found it calm and full by the time she left; and the one who came at half six was clear about it — the crowd arrives after seven. The clientele recurs as well: ten writers remark on older customers, neighbours and market traders, and one says everyone in the room but her was a local.
- It is two restaurants, summer and winter. Twenty of the thirty posts are about the cold bowl and ten about sliced fish, and they fall on either side of the calendar — the mulhoe posts run May to September, the sashimi posts January to April. What the winter writers agree on is the cut: long and thick, generous without being unwieldy, neither thin nor daunting. Five of them reach for the same observation. Winter belongs to the yellowtail. A January 2026 post, from someone who had already eaten it several times that season, calls this the best of them — and records that she had booked, that the day's fish had sold out, and that the customer just ahead of her went without. Two writers in late January and late February were told the season had ended. One in July repeats the rumour travelling the other way, that the yellowtail here is extraordinary once it turns cold. If that is why you are going, ring about the season and the stock.
- There is more room inside than the front suggests. Nine writers call it roomy and none calls it cramped; two separately note the space between tables. Four mention a private room, one of them as a booking room for parties, and two advise ringing ahead if you are a group. Seating is at tables, not on the floor, by one account. Eating alone comes up too — three writers note solo diners at other tables, one saying the counter-less room is fine for it. But all three were there with somebody else, watching. Not one of the thirty posts was written by someone who came alone.
- There are regulars here, and six of these posts are theirs. One writer filed two inside a fortnight — the second opening with the first, and losing count of which visit it was. Another came back in July having been in February and pinned the receipt to the post. A third calls it where she goes with her parents. One writer brought her blog a second visit because the first had pleased her that much; another had been hearing about it from her family for years before she went back. Five posts were written by someone who brought their mother, and one of those calls it her mother's regular — she has been eating mulhoe here for years. Two writers say it was their first visit, and both say they will be back. Nobody says they will not.
- Every table has a call button, and there are separate buttons for soju and for beer. Two writers point them out, one of them delighted that you never have to say a word. Eight drank with the meal and three of those at midday — one post opens at eleven in the morning with the observation that fish calls for soju and a bottle between two is hardly a bottle. Another ordered the moment she tasted the hot pot; a third chose the local Busan label because it was stocked, at ₩5,000. And one writer, with high blood pressure, watched the cold bottle going past and looked at it only. A free soft drink per table, by one account.

Parking is where these posts disagree most. Eighteen of them raise it, and they do not match. · "Supported at the tower car park in the next building" — five, two with the terms: one car per table, or ₩2,000 off with a cash payment. · "Thirty minutes covered, then ₩2,000 an hour" — two, with two more capping it at ₩20,000. · "You use the tower next door and nothing is covered: ₩2,000 for thirty minutes, ₩4,000 for an hour" — one, from February 2026. · "No car park" / "can't park" / "hard to park" — five. One advises taking any paid space you pass, since the nearby ones fill. We cannot say which of these is current. One thing does hold across all of them: the restaurant has no car park of its own and you use the paid tower next door. Whether anything is knocked off, and how much, is unsettled. If you are driving, ring and ask.

Not one post says what floor it is on. Across thirty posts there is no ground floor, no first floor, no basement, and nobody going up or down. The address carries no unit or level either. About the front there is something: the sign is big enough to find easily (one writer), it is an old sliding door (one), and a live-fish tank stands outside it (seven). Inside is tables, and a wide room. It reads like somewhere you step into straight off the lane — but nobody has written that, and a thing we infer is not a thing we counted.
Nobody has looked at whether a wheelchair can get in. Across thirty posts there is no step, no ramp, no lift. One post does contain the words "wheelchair accessible entrance" — but that writer did not see it. It sits in a run of "separate men's and women's toilets, booking, takeaway, groups welcome, wheelchair accessible entrance" followed by "parking: private car park at the rear," lifted whole from the Naver place listing. The evidence that this list is wrong is on this very page: both writers who actually looked at the toilet call it shared between men and women, and five say there is no private car park. A list wrong in two places cannot be trusted in the third. So we do not know about the door. The building is an old shopfront with a sliding door onto a lane, and the seating inside is at tables, but nobody describes getting through the entrance.
Two people looked at the toilet and both say the same thing: it is inside, and it is shared between men and women. One states it outright (September 2026); the other lists it at the end of her write-up (May 2026). The other twenty-eight never mention it. One post, though, carries the words "separate men's and women's." It sits in a line with "booking, takeaway, groups welcome, wheelchair accessible entrance" — the Naver place listing, not something that writer saw. The two who looked say shared, and shared is what we go with: where a copied list and a pair of eyes disagree, the eyes win.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know
- The closing day changes with the season, and not knowing will cost you the trip. Four posts between 6 January and 16 April 2026 give "closed Tuesdays." From 30 April onward, eight posts say the opposite: "no closing day during mulhoe season," "no regular closing," "open all year." The switch falls at the end of April inside our window. It reads as open every day through the season and shut on Tuesdays outside it — but not one post says when the season is taken to start or end. The afternoon break splits too: fourteen posts give 15:00–16:30, three give 15:00–16:00. Six say there is no break at weekends, and one July 2026 post says there is no break at all during mulhoe season. That may also be seasonal; we could not confirm it. If you are going on a Tuesday, or between three and half four, ring first.
- The headline price splits between ₩18,000 and ₩20,000. Eleven posts give ₩18,000 for the Pohang mulhoe; two give ₩20,000 (July and September 2026). Yet the most recent post, 24 September 2026, gives ₩18,000 and adds that it looks to have gone up a thousand — the board she read had both signature bowls at ₩18,000. That the price is moving inside our window is clear; what it is today, we cannot say. Other figures hold steady: ₩23,000 for the sole, flatfish and wild-caught bowls, ₩15,000 for the rice bowl, ₩50,000/₩70,000/₩90,000 for the platter by size, ₩5,000 for the hot pot, ₩1,500 for rice, ₩3,000 for the corn cheese. One January 2026 post had a lunch set — hot pot and raw-fish rice bowl — at ₩12,000 a head, and it is the only post that mentions a lunch set at all.
