Badatsok Jogae Wangguk

바닷속조개왕국 A grilled-shellfish house on the seafront road at Songdo beach in Busan, where the free spread that comes before the clams is half the reason people go.

Data as of · Published ·

Badatsok Jogae Wangguk is a grilled-shellfish house on the main road between Songdo beach and the cable-car station in Busan. Three dishes head the board — the grill, the hotpot and grilled eel — and you order by head count, from 60,000 won for two. It occupies the first two floors of a three-storey building; the upper one looks out at the sea, and in summer there are tables on the pavement. Unlike the tented row at Amnam park it cooks over gas rather than charcoal, and it is indoors, so winter is no obstacle — four posts draw that contrast themselves. Eleven in the morning until midnight, closed on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. What people talk about here is not the shellfish but what arrives before it — nineteen posts stop to list it. The constants: raw-fish salad, steamed egg, corn cheese, kimchi pancake, mussel soup and a tomato spaghetti, with grilled prawn, corn, a small rice bowl or cold fish soup depending on the day. Two writers finished a bottle of soju on the free dishes alone; two others skipped the paid sides because of them; two note the cheese and butter get refilled. The spaghetti is what surprises: it is there to be simmered with the grilled shellfish dropped in, and two writers had never met the idea at a shellfish house.
  2. There is an upstairs, and the sea is only visible from it — eleven posts say so. One is explicit: the ground floor has tables, but for the view you want the first floor, and the ground floor has cars and passers-by going past. Four were shown upstairs; one found the window seats already taken; one weekday visitor had the whole floor to herself, and mentions carrying her own drinks up rather than making anyone climb the stairs for her.
  3. Eight posts mention the people running it and all eight are warm. Three were taught how to grill — one had the owner take over with a firm "not like that", another learned that scallops go on first. One asked whether she could sit upstairs and was waved up. One, with a companion who does not eat seafood, asked whether she could order only a rice bowl and a ramyeon at a shellfish house, and was served without fuss. One broke a nail and was lent a nail clipper. Nobody complains.
  4. Accounts of queueing disagree: two waited, three did not. The two were a Saturday evening — she phoned ahead, booked for eight and sat at twenty to nine — and a summer night, fifteen minutes behind a foreign family with three or four groups forming behind her. The three who walked in came on a weekday at five, on a weekend afternoon, and on a weekend evening when exactly one table upstairs was free. A regular says it is full every time she goes. One post notes you can put your name down by phone, and the same post notes there is nowhere much to wait.
  5. No post calls it expensive, and the three that discuss price all go the other way — reasonable for a tourist strip; genuinely reasonable; cheaper than other places charge for the same side of ramyeon. More striking is that the prices have not moved in two years: the board photographed in November 2024 (60,000 won for two, 70,000 for three, 80,000 for four, 100,000 for five) is quoted unchanged in May 2026, and a September 2026 post still says sixty for two. Soju was 5,000 won in both November 2024 and May 2026.
  6. You do the grilling, but staff step in — three posts say so. One was helped because they were making a mess of it; one had the owner take over outright; one was taught the order from scratch, and wrote it down: scallops first, and when the meat comes away from the shell, a knob of butter and some cheese on top, then turn it and finish it.

Parking

Posts saying you can park3 of 22 posts

There is no car park of its own; you use the public bays across the road and the restaurant validates. Three writers got the ticket and describe it, two with the terms: two hours free, one car per table, then 1,800 won an hour up to 8,000 a day. A third says only that they cover your parking if you eat. Most people arrive on foot, though — four walked from a nearby hotel, three dropped in while walking the seafront.

Not one of the twenty-five posts mentions a wheelchair, a pushchair, a step at the door or a ramp. What eleven of them do establish is that there are stairs to the upper floor, and that the sea view exists only up there. The ground floor has tables and you can certainly eat there; one writer says plainly that you cannot see the water from it. This is missing information rather than an absence of obstacles — if stairs are a problem, call first.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • There does not appear to be a toilet inside. Two posts, from December 2025 and February 2026, go out of their way to say you should use the public one right outside. Two other posts list "separate men's and women's" among copied facility bullet points; we counted neither, precisely because they contradict the people who were there. We could not settle which is right — but know that there is a public toilet at the door. Nothing at all about an accessible one.
  • A lot of people did not choose this place first. Five of the twenty-five came down from the shellfish tents at Amnam park having failed to eat there: shut for the summer; shut full stop; unwilling to seat a party of two with no estimate of the wait; told at five that nine o'clock was not guaranteed; and, in one case, simply turned away from the restaurant next door. Two of the five then say they preferred it here — better than Amnam, one writes; quieter, says another. One post argues the other way, that Amnam is still the better value.
  • The heat is gas, not charcoal, and four posts remark on it as a change from the tents up the road. Each table has two burners, though only one is used for the shellfish — one diner grilled on the left and shifted things to the right to eat. Two warn that the flame is strong enough to burn the shells if you look away, and one lost her corn cheese to it. One had her burner relit with a blowtorch.
  • Five of the thirty are out of the denominator, which leaves twenty-five posts by twenty-four people. One was dropped entirely: a top-ten list of Songdo fish restaurants scraped from the platform, in which this place is the tenth row, a name and a phone number. The other four round up several shellfish or fish restaurants and none of the four went to any of them. Two say so themselves — one credits its photographs to the business's own platform listing, the other states outright that the post was written from the platform entry. That one recites a rating of 4.56, 384 reviews, and how many people used the words "fresh" and "friendly", without once saying what was eaten. And twenty-five posts are not twenty-five people: one blog wrote the same meal up twice, once inside a trip itinerary and once as a review of its own.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship, and twelve state outright that they paid; the remaining thirteen say nothing either way. Nor did we find the usual cluster of commissioned copy here — the five we dropped are not sponsored write-ups but listings assembled from the platform, which is a different problem.
  • Three complaints turn up. One writer bit down on grit in a clam and feared for a front tooth — the other twenty-four say nothing of the kind, so there is no basis for treating it as normal. Two missed the foil tray of chilli paste and vegetables that other shellfish houses provide. One found the onion scattered over the shellfish too sparse. In a place whose prices have not risen in two years it is tempting to connect those last two, but that is our inference and not something anybody reported.
  • The shop has moved once. Its own notice on the platform says the location changed, that the new one is a minute's walk from the old, and that it now has a clean upstairs with a view; one post copies that notice verbatim, and that post is among the five we dropped. When the move happened we do not know. What we can say is that the address is the same in the oldest post we read, from October 2024, as in the newest, from September 2026 — and that a November 2024 post already describes the upstairs. The current address has held for two years.
  • One party got in at ten. Writing in February 2025, the author says she arrived an hour before opening, found customers already inside, asked, and was told ten was fine. The other eleven posts all give eleven o'clock. With a single account we left the published hours alone; whether that was a one-off or the usual, we cannot say.
  • Three phone numbers exist for this place. The posts give two — one appearing in ten of them, one in a single post — and they share their last four digits; one writer laughs at how memorable they are. Numbers beginning 0507 are masked forwarding lines, so both may well ring the same phone. The number filed on the business licence is different again and appears in none of the posts. Whether it changed or serves another purpose we could not verify, so the number we publish is the one ten writers agree on.
  • Not one post describes getting to this restaurant by bus or train. The closest is from November 2024: Songdo is easy to reach by bus from Jagalchi station, the writer says, and then adds in the next breath that having to change from the subway to a bus is why she rarely comes — which is about the neighbourhood, not the door. Most people walked: four from a hotel, one of them ten minutes; three while out on the beach or the cliff walkway; two put it at three minutes from the cable car. Three arrived by car.
  • Two posts noticed foreign customers: one saw several downstairs and remarked that they were mostly eating the grilled eel; another queued on a summer night behind a foreign family. Neither says anything about a menu in another language, and nor does anyone else — how ordering goes, we do not know.
