Japanese

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam

종로돈부리 연남 Jongno is the downtown Seoul district where the brand started in 2010, and donburi is Japanese for a rice bowl; this is its Yeonnam-dong branch.

Compiled from 29 blog posts read in fullSources →

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Japanese rice-bowl restaurant in the basement of a building on Donggyo-ro 46-gil in Yeonnam-dong. The most-ordered dish is the salmon bowl (sakedong, KRW 18,000). Bowls run from KRW 12,000 for katsudon to KRW 26,000 for salmon belly with pollock roe, and there are also hot-pot sets and udon. Bowls come with miso soup, pickled radish and pickles. We read 30 posts dated 7 September to 16 October 2026, and every one describes an actual meal there. Twenty-eight of them went up in the ten days from 7 to 16 October. One describes a December 2025 visit but was posted in October 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The word that comes up most is thick: 15 posts said the salmon or the pork cutlet was thick. One wrote that the thickness of the salmon belly was the first thing she noticed; another said a lifted piece of cutlet showed a fat cross-section.
  2. Twenty-five posts described the seating: a long wooden bar facing the open kitchen, a second single-row bar along the wall, plus tables for two and four. Five writers went alone, and all said the bar or single seats made eating solo easy.
  3. Eight posts mention a Naver receipt-review promotion: a written review earns a soft drink, and adding photos also earns a stamp on a loyalty card. Some posts said two people taking part can swap their two soft drinks for one highball, ade or beer.
  4. Nine posts said the frying was crisp. One praised the thin, crackly tempura batter, and another was surprised the shrimp stayed crisp even sitting in the hot-pot broth.
2 more
  1. It is a walk from the station. Five posts described walking from Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, putting it at 7 to 15 minutes. One writer went without a map, hit a dead-end alley and had to double back.
  2. Eleven posts called the staff friendly. One said a server warned that the light soup bowl might tip if a spoon was left in it; another said staff showed how to wrap the salmon around rice like sushi.

Getting inside

In a basement7 of 29 posts
Toilet inside6 of 29 posts

It is below street level: seven posts said so, and four of them mentioned walking down a flight of stairs. One warned that the big lit sign on the building belongs to another shop, so look for the wooden menu board and white noren curtain in the alley. Even so, posts kept noting daylight: the windows face the street, one writer called it a basement that doesn't feel like one, and ten posts mentioned the windows or the sunlight.

No post mentions a step at the door, wheelchair or stroller access, or an elevator, so we don't know. Four posts did say you go down a flight of stairs to get in.

Six posts said the toilet is inside the restaurant. Three noted a separate washbasin outside the toilet, handy for washing up before eating.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • No post reports waiting for a table. Two said they didn't wait: one went around 11:30 on a rainy Saturday in December 2025 and found it nearly empty; another walked in around 12:30 on a weekday, though it was busy enough that they took bar seats. Two others arrived at opening time and were first in. We don't know about weekend evenings.
  • Opening hours are mostly copied from listings, not checked in person; only one post says it read them off the sign out front. Most give weekdays 11:30–21:30 with a 16:00–17:00 break and last order at 21:00, and weekends 11:30–21:00 with last order at 20:30. Five posts put the weekday close at 21:00, five say there is no weekend break, and none mentions a closing day. Check before you go.
  • Prices appear to have gone up. A December 2025 visit lists cold bukkake udon at KRW 12,000 and karaage at KRW 6,500; October 2026 posts list KRW 14,000 and KRW 8,000. The salmon bowl was KRW 18,000 in both periods. One post gave a full bill: two bowls and one ade for KRW 39,500, about KRW 19,750 a head. Three posts called it good value.
  • Many posts copied the same phone number, 02-6448-2384. One post says Naver booking takes parties of two to six, but no post clearly says the writer booked ahead.
  • Many posts look like they follow one template. Twenty-eight of the 30 went up within ten days, with near-identical titles and hashtags. Ten describe the same moment, staff recommending salmon because it was especially good that day. One post discloses sponsorship, one says the writer paid, and the other 28 say nothing either way. Claims like 'aged fresh every dawn' and 'sold the same day' are the restaurant's own slogans repeated by posts, so we don't treat them as evidence.
