Korean

Ppeolgeon Nakji

뻘건낙지 Ppeolgeon is a blunt, colloquial way of saying 'red' and nakji is long-arm octopus — 'red octopus'; the sign is white with the name in red letters.

Compiled from 29 blog posts read in fullSources →

An octopus specialist down a side street from Exit 1 of Yeokchon Station in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. Live octopus from the tank out front goes into a stir-fry (43,000 won for two) and a clear clam-and-vegetable stew (46,000 won for two), with single-person lunch bowls such as the octopus rice bowl (12,000 won). For the stew, the owner drops the octopus in at your table and cuts it once it is cooked. The room is small, four to six tables by the posts' counts. We read 30 posts dated 20 January to 17 October 2026; setting aside one about another restaurant, all 29 record an actual meal here.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You don't handle the octopus yourself. Twenty posts say the owner or a staff member came to the table, put the live octopus into the pot, lifted it out before it toughened and cut it with scissors. For the stew, several describe the legs being cut first and the head left to simmer and cut later; four say the stir-fry was cut at the table too. One post notes the owner does this when not busy, and in another the writer's father cut the head himself.
  2. Eight posts say they watched the octopus being taken from the tank after they ordered; in one, the writer followed and helped pick it out. Posts that only repeat that it is 'said to be' cooked to order are not counted.
  3. Thirteen posts got something they hadn't ordered — mostly a soft-yolk fried egg, sometimes fried gimmari (four posts) or sea squirt (two). One post says what you get, if anything, varies. The standard sides that come up again and again are glazed rice cake like a tteok skewer, young-radish water kimchi, soft tofu, macaroni salad and bean sprouts.
  4. It is a small room. Ten posts call it not large or snug, and none call it big. Those that counted tables give four, four, four, four or five, five, six, two four-tops plus two two-tops, and three four-tops plus two two-tops. One says that despite few tables the middle is open and comfortable. Seventeen posts call it clean, pointing to the tables, floor, self-serve bar and tank.
2 more
  1. Seven posts walked from Yeokchon Station, giving two or three to five minutes; several say the red-lettered sign shows up as soon as you turn into the side street from Exit 1.
  2. Posts mostly found the stir-fry mild: three say not spicy, four moderately spicy, one spicy. Two posts chose between regular and hot, one picking a level likened to Shin Ramyun. The '300-hour aged sauce' line is the restaurant's own claim repeated, and we don't rely on it.

Parking

6 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park6 of 29 posts

Parking is one or two cars in front of the shop. Six posts parked there or looked at the space; one adds that a regular car fits in front and only a compact fits the narrow spot beside it. One post that drove used the Eunpyeong Peace Park public lot near Exit 4 of Yeokchon Station (900 won per 30 minutes), and another says that is where they go when the front spaces are taken.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 29 posts read)

Only one post mentions the floor, saying it is at street level; no other post addresses it.

We don't know whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. Two posts went with children, but nobody described the entrance. That means no one wrote about it, not that there's a problem.

No post mentions the toilet — where it is or whether it is separated by gender — so we don't know.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • No post says they waited. One found it full on a weekend evening; another felt tables turned over quickly because much of the business is delivery. That isn't proof there is never a line — just that nobody wrote about waiting.
  • Twenty-five posts give opening hours, all copied from listings: 24 say 11:00 to 22:00, 23 of them adding that Wednesday is the regular day off. A single July 2026 post says Saturdays open at 12:00. Nobody mentions a break time or last order.
  • Prices held mostly steady from June to October 2026. One post (2 July) gives 45,000 won for the stew for two; the rest say 46,000. Mixed fritters are 8,000 in a June post and 9,000 in an August one — one post each, so we can't call it an increase. One pair spent 60,000 to 70,000 won on the stir-fry for two, squid fritters and beer.
  • More than twenty posts list the phone number, 02-351-3636. That you can reserve appears only in copied listings; no post says they booked. Several suggest calling ahead about parking because the space is tight.
