Gyeongseong Jangeo

경성장어 Gyeongseong is the old colonial-era name for Seoul and jangeo means freshwater eel; posts say the room takes its cue from 1945-era Gyeongseong Station.

Compiled from 29 blog posts read in fullSources →

Gyeongseong Jangeo is an eel tasting-course restaurant on basement level 2 (unit 212) of the Seoul Finance Center mall on Sejong-daero, Jung-gu. Domestic eel is grilled in the kitchen and served over a small charcoal brazier, framed by egg custard and a hand roll, a raw-fish and abalone platter, a pot-rice set with perilla eel soup, and dessert. Prices in the posts run from 46,000 won for the lunch hitsumabushi course to 157,000 won for the dinner signature; the most-ordered was dinner course B at 133,000 won a head, eaten in ten posts. A 52,000-won kaisendon course was added in September 2026. We read 30 posts from 31 August to 9 October 2026; 29 describe an actual meal.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You do not grill at the table. Thirteen posts say the eel arrives fully cooked from the kitchen, kept warm over a few coals in a brazier — no smoke filling the room, and several mention their clothes did not end up smelling of it.
  2. The grill station is on view as you walk in: eleven posts mention watching eel being split and wood-fire grilled in the open kitchen.
  3. There are private rooms. Nineteen posts mention them, and three actually ate in one — the room by the entrance, a room taken because of a baby, and a tenth-anniversary dinner. The post with a baby says a high chair was set out; another says the main hall is adults-only while children may eat in the rooms.
  4. Sixteen posts call the staff kind, and they say why: each dish is explained as it lands, and the pot rice is mixed and portioned at the table. One post notes there is no call bell in the rooms.
5 more
  1. Seven posts say the courses leave you full — one says the signature course is plenty even for two men. One post adds that each individual plate is small.
  2. Eight posts say the eel and raw fish had no fishy smell. One post found the black-pork tsukune noticeably porky.
  3. Ten posts booked ahead through Naver or Catchtable and found their table already set.
  4. Three posts describe walking in from Gwanghwamun station exit 5 (one also mentions stairs straight down from City Hall station). The "two minutes' walk" lines elsewhere are copied info.
  5. Couples marking an occasion are the biggest group (six posts), then family outings with a mother or baby (four), friends (two), and one team lunch and one solo meal.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

Three posts describe walking in from Gwanghwamun station exit 5 (one also mentions stairs straight down from City Hall station). The "two minutes' walk" lines elsewhere are copied info.

Getting inside

In a basement8 of 29 posts
Lift to the floor1 of 29 posts

It is two floors underground: eight posts describe going down into the SFC mall and walking to the end of the corridor. One warns the entrance does not look like a door; another says it is heavy to push.

Nobody says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. Four posts came down by escalator and one mentions the building lift; one says the door is heavy.

No one describes the toilets from experience. One post's header says "toilet inside", but it reads as copied info, so we did not count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Nearly every post repeats "free corkage", but only two actually brought a bottle (one red, one white). One post says spirits, beer and traditional liquor cannot be brought in.
  • Treat the chorus with care: 22 posts landed between 8 and 27 September 2026 with the same hashtags, info block and order of praise. Two disclose sponsorship, and one reports an in-store notice offering a 50,000-won voucher for writing a review. Only one says the author paid.
  • Prices are time-bound: several posts cite 20% off the weekend lunch signature course (99,000 to 79,200 won) until 31 October 2026, and three ate at the discount. Nobody has written about prices after that.
  • No post mentions queuing — not proof there is none, but ten booked and no one wrote about walking in and waiting.
  • Opening hours appear in 24 posts; 23 agree on 11:00–22:00 with a 15:00–17:30 break and last orders at 14:00 and 20:00, mostly copied from listings. One post alone gives 11:00–20:00.
  • Two phone numbers appear: 0507-1341-1222 (looks like a Naver relay number) and 02-6951-1222 (given for reservation enquiries). Most posts booked via Naver or Catchtable.
  • The kaisendon course was new in September 2026 — an 8 September post calls it a recent launch. No earlier post lists the menu, so the exact date is unknown.
