The Ban Food

더반푸드 Deoban Pudeu A self-service Korean buffet canteen in an office-building basement, open to anyone at weekday lunchtime.

Deoban Food is a Korean buffet canteen on the first basement level of the SK Techno Building, three minutes on foot from exit 5 at Ttukseom. You do not have to work in the building to eat here — one writer notes it is not her company's canteen, another is simply glad an outsider can get in, and a third records that outsiders face no time restriction. You buy a ticket at the kiosk by the door and then serve yourself as much as you like. Rice, soup and side dishes change daily, and the day's menu is posted to a KakaoTalk channel. It opens for three hours at lunchtime on weekdays and that is the whole day. We read ten posts, from August 2019 to July 2026 — and ten posts are not ten people: one writer came twice, in 2019 and in 2020.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Seven years of prices line up without a gap — the cleanest such record we have read anywhere. ₩5,000 cash in August 2019; ₩6,000 by February 2020, which the same writer notes is a thousand more than the year before; ₩6,000 still in September 2020 and September 2021; ₩7,000 by April 2023, in a post that puts the previous figure at ₩6,500; ₩7,000 that July; ₩7,500 in August 2024; ₩8,000 in July 2026. The price rose by sixty per cent and the word people reach for — value — did not change once in seven posts. The cost of lunch outside seems to have climbed with it: the 2026 post opens by observing that a meal out now starts well above ten thousand won. You pay at the kiosk by card or cash, though one writer warns that it will not take a fifty-thousand-won note, and the Seoul and Seongdong local-currency vouchers are accepted — one writer paid with hers.
  2. You serve yourself, so the portion is yours to decide. Four posts lead with it — take as much as you want; eat more if you want more; refills without limit. One writer, eating only once that day, piled the rice high; two confess to overeating every time they come. The kitchen does push back a little: one post records a sign asking people to take only the rice they will finish. Five posts mention a free fizzy-drink dispenser on the way out — cola, lemonade, orangeade — and one notes a yoghurt drink or a piece of fruit for afters.
  3. It is big enough that you do not queue. Four writers call the room large, and one spells out why that matters: at some Korean buffets you wait for a seat, and here you sit straight down. Another, arriving at ten to one, still found plenty of people eating — but not one post describes standing in a line. The same writer who praised the size hedged it in the next breath: not exactly a pleasant room, but bright and roomy enough. One post says the air conditioning works well.

Parking

1 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park1 of 10 posts

If you drive, do not count on a space. Only one writer actually parked, and he went down to the lowest level and still found almost nothing free. The same post gives the rate: ₩600 for ten minutes (August 2024). Two other posts say there is parking, but both lines are lifted from an information block rather than seen, so we have not counted them. More writers arrived another way — two by bicycle (the same person twice), one by bus, and several on foot from Ttukseom station.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

In a basement1 of 10 posts

Not one post mentions a step, a ramp, or whether a wheelchair can get in. We know it is a basement and that one writer took the stairs, but nobody says what else there is. We do not know. All we can confirm from the posts is that the food is self-service, so a tray has to be carried.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • The posts disagree about hygiene, and five years separate them. In September 2021 a writer set down what she saw: tongs changed constantly at the serving counter, disposable gloves laid out, the whole thing scrupulous. In July 2026 another wrote the opposite — an old building, a canteen that felt worn with it, and a general standard of cleanliness that fell short of his own. He qualified it himself: this is the standard of someone with a horror of germs, and going by how fast the counter turns over and how many people eat here, most office workers clearly find it fine. The other eight posts say nothing about hygiene at all. We have not dropped the single dissenting voice — the other eight did not contradict him, they simply did not raise it. Whether the building aged in those five years or the two writers simply differ, we could not tell.
  • It is one floor below ground, unit 107 in the basement of the SK Techno Building, and one writer describes taking the stairs down. No post says whether there is a lift or another way in. Finding it does not seem to be a problem — one writer says you will spot it easily once you are down there.
  • No post mentions a toilet. That does not mean there is none — it means nobody wrote it down. Being inside an office building, one would expect to use the building's, but no writer says so.
  • You can come on your own. One writer puts it in his title — good for eating alone — and none of the posts written by people with company mentions sharing a table. Few writers say who they came with, though: two came to meet someone for lunch, one came alone, and the rest do not say. The customers appear to be mostly people working nearby.
  • It used to open on Saturdays and no longer does. Posts from 2019 and 2020 say Monday to Saturday, and the writer of the September 2020 post actually ate here on a Saturday. A year later another still counted Saturday opening as a real advantage. But from April 2023 the posts say closed at weekends, and by 2024 and 2026 they say Saturday and Sunday closed, weekday lunch only. Saturday service ended somewhere between September 2021 and April 2023. The opening hours themselves never moved in seven years: eleven until two. No post mentions a midday break or a last order. A telephone number appears in only one post, from 2021, and even there it sits in a copied information block, so we have not been able to confirm it.
  • The dishes change every day. A writer who came for over a month reports that everything except the salad at one end of the counter is different each time, and that she can count on her fingers the days she saw the same dish twice. It is worth looking before you go — two posts say a KakaoTalk channel carries the day's menu, and one notes that today's and tomorrow's are pinned up at the door. Two days, copied from the posts as written: one Monday in 2019 brought multigrain rice, ox-bone and cabbage soup, lemon sweet-and-sour pork, cold jellyfish salad, sausage with rice-cake in soy, and stir-fried sweet-potato stems; one Wednesday in 2024 brought squid with spicy pork, bean-sprout soup, assorted fritters, rice cakes in black-bean sauce, meatballs, sugared tomato and green salad. On the hottest day of 2026 there was ginseng chicken soup with a bowl of chicken porridge beside it. One writer rates the fritters highly, one will drop everything when the chicken-and-egg rice is on, and one finds the kimchi stew thin — otherwise perfect.
  • No post declares itself sponsored. Two say plainly that they paid; the other eight say nothing, but most describe handing over their own money. One writer anticipates the question herself: you might think the place is paying me to write this, but if a canteen like this closed, I am the one who has to eat lunch every day. The name changed in May 2019 — the same room was called Jeongdam Food before that, and a writer who had been away since April found the sign changed on his return, along with a notice announcing a relaunch as Deoban Food on 7 May. The same writer adds that either way the food was as good and the price the same.
