Hongdae Jopok Tteokbokki

홍대조폭떡볶이 Jopok is Korean slang for gangster; posts say the nickname stuck because the founder, who began selling from a street stall, kept getting into scuffles with drunk customers.

A snack-food counter on the ground floor of Wausan-ro 29-gil, near Exit 7 of Hongik Univ. Station, serving tteokbokki, fried bits, sundae and gimbap. You order at a kiosk, wait for your number and collect the food yourself. Posts from mid-August 2026 list tteokbokki at 5,000 won and sundae at 6,000; earlier posts had 4,500 and 5,000. Six posts say the original stand by Sangsang Madang closed and reopened here. We read 30 posts from 14 May to 11 October 2026; after setting aside three about the second branch, one about a photo studio upstairs and one list post, 25 are first-hand visits.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Everything is self-service. Eighteen posts ordered at the kiosk. Pickles, soy sauce, cutlery, water, ice and fish-cake broth come from a self-service bar, drinks from the fridge after paying, and trays go back to the return counter. Several posts liked being able to take broth without ordering fish cake.
  2. Roomy for a snack bar: 17 posts called it spacious and 11 called it clean. There are two- and four-seat tables and sofa seats, and posts saw plenty of solo diners. One post missed the cosy street-stall feel of the old days.
  3. Not hot. Eleven posts said so, four called it sweet-spicy without calling it hot, and none said it was spicy. One put it at Shin Ramyun level or milder; another said a five- and eight-year-old found it a little hot but kept eating.
  4. Nineteen posts called the fried items crisp; they are re-fried to order and cut up. One takeaway post said they stayed crisp even after microwaving.

No post found a dedicated car park. Two said there is no parking; one couple who drove paid 10,500 won for 90 minutes at the LC Tower car park. Most 'no parking, use the public lot' lines are copied listing info.

Where it is

Map showing where Hongdae Jopok Tteokbokki is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

5 posts say it is walkable from the station.

Getting inside

No post describes the floor from experience; the address says ground floor, but nobody wrote about it.

No post says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. That is unknown, not absent.

No post mentions the toilet, where it is or whether it is split by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices went up. Six posts from May to 17 July 2026 list tteokbokki, five fried pieces and gimbap at 4,500 won and sundae at 5,000; six posts from 17 August onward list 5,000 and 6,000. One post dated 16 August still gives the old prices. Fish cake (2,500) and drinks (2,000) did not change. No one called it expensive and 14 posts called it good value; one group of four paid under 30,000 won, a pair paid 20,500.
  • This is not the original spot. Six posts say the main shop by Sangsang Madang closed and reopened here, two of them saying two years ago; none gives a date. We treated the second branch at Hongik-ro 6-gil 38 as a separate place and did not count it.
  • Only two posts speak to waiting: one walked straight in at 1:30 pm on a Saturday, another saw people waiting for tables around 11 pm. Guesses that fast turnover keeps waits short were not counted.
  • Five posts walked from the station: five minutes from Exit 7, eight to ten from Exits 4 or 8, under ten minutes. The '315 m from Exit 7' line is copied listing info. No one came by bus.
  • Eighteen posts give opening hours as 11:00 to 22:00 daily and 13 give a 21:40 last order, mostly copied from the listing. No one mentions a day off. One September 2026 post says they went around 11 pm, which does not fit.
  • Many posts list the phone number 02-332-1009, but none tried to book. One summary said walk-in only, without saying they asked.
  • Four posts carry the same five hashtags in the same order, and one of them discloses sponsorship; four more open with the same tags. All describe what they ate and saw, so we counted them, but some may be promotional.
