HAWAII SHELLFISH

하와이조개 홍대점 Hawai Jogae Hongdae-jeom Hawai jogae means 'Hawaii clams' — the wall logo spells it HAWAII SHELLFISH; Hongdae-jeom marks the Hongdae branch.

Compiled from 28 blog posts read in fullSources →

Hawaii Shellfish Hongdae is a clam-grill house in the basement of the Taegyeong Building, next to Hongdae Playground (Hongik Culture Park). The signature two-person clam grill costs 53,800 won and comes in two rounds: scallops, hard clams, pen-shell clam and a whole squid, with tteokbokki, corn cheese and cheese spaghetti. You finish by cooking free, unlimited instant noodles in the mussel soup. In autumn, five posts ordered salt-roasted live prawns instead (28,000 won per 500 g). We read 30 posts dated 23 May to 5 October 2026 and set aside 2 that were about other restaurants. The remaining 28 are all visits made between July and October 2026, and none of them reports a change in prices or layout.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Nineteen posts said the portions are large. With the two-person grill, the second round arrives while you are still on the first; one post wrote that the second round was much bigger, and another counted eight scallops alone. Two posts said the meal took them two hours. No post called the portions small.
  2. Staff cook the first round. Nine posts said staff flipped the clams and cut up the squid for them, and three said staff only laid things on the grill or set it up. Posts say you grill the second round yourself. One post warned that the burners are hot enough to char the squid in moments.
  3. Folding doors open onto outdoor street-stall tables out front. Ten posts mentioned them, including one that ate inside because the outdoor seats were full. One post counted four to six outdoor tables.
  4. Sixteen posts said the room is large. One estimated well over forty four-person tables, another said it seats more than eighty, and several noted wide gaps between tables. On noise, one post said it was not quiet, while another found it not too loud even on a weekend evening.
4 more
  1. One post said they came by subway, nine minutes on foot from Hongik University Station exit 9. Counting posts that said the station is within walking distance, there are three. The seven-to-ten-minute and 577 m figures elsewhere are copied directions. Nobody described getting there by bus.
  2. Seven posts came as a couple and three with friends. Three said they drove. No post describes a visit with family or children.
  3. No post called it expensive. Nine said it was good value or cheaper than the seaside clam towns of Oido and Wolmido. One said it was on the pricey side but fair for the amount and freshness. Couples who listed their bills paid roughly 60,000 to 85,000 won for two: 53,800 won for the grill plus 10,000 won of soju and soft drinks, or plus 25,000 won of raw prawns and 5,000 won of soju.
  4. Six posts saw celebrity autographs and a poster for the TV show Meoksuldan on the walls and pillars. One singled out Pani Bottle's autograph, and another saw comedians and YouTubers eating there that day.

Parking

4 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park4 of 28 posts

Customers use the free underground car park in the next-door building. Four posts drove and parked there. One noted there is no barrier and warned that the ramp is steep, and another had heard that low cars may struggle. The 'ten free spaces' figure is the restaurant's own claim, copied into posts. Posts disagree on whether the car park is to the left or right of the shop.

Where it is

Map showing where HAWAII SHELLFISH is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

One post said they came by subway, nine minutes on foot from Hongik University Station exit 9. Counting posts that said the station is within walking distance, there are three. The seven-to-ten-minute and 577 m figures elsewhere are copied directions. Nobody described getting there by bus.

Getting inside

In a basement5 of 28 posts
Toilet inside4 of 28 posts
Separate restrooms3 of 28 posts

The address says basement, but the building sits on a slope and has two entrances. Five posts described the floor. One said that, thanks to the slope, the front opens straight onto the road, and another called it both B1 and ground floor. Two posts that came in from the back said they had to walk down stairs.

No post describes getting in with a wheelchair or a stroller. 'Wheelchair-accessible seating' appears only in copied listing text, so we did not count it. Two posts said the back entrance is a stairway. Nobody said whether the front entrance has a step, so we don't know either way.

Four posts said the toilets are inside the restaurant, and three of them said they are separate for men and women. One post mentioned a phone-charging spot outside the toilets. Nobody said whether the toilets are cramped.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • No post reports waiting. Three posts said they walked straight in, one of them on a Saturday night. Two others had heard there can be a wait in the evening, or guessed there would be one on weekends. Several posts said the room fills after 5 or 6 pm, so we don't know how long the wait is at the busiest times.
  • Accounts of the corkage policy conflict. A copied in-store notice says one bottle of wine per table is free and each bottle after that is 5,000 won. Another post said corkage is not free but costs 5,000 won. Nobody actually brought a bottle, so we did not count either claim. Seven posts noted that the restaurant sells wine.
  • Twenty-two posts listed opening hours, and all agree: daily from 4 pm to 2 am, last orders at 1 am. Four said there is no closing day. All of these figures are copied from the listing, though; the only first-hand check is a post that went after 10 pm.
  • Many posts give the same phone number, 0507-1383-8897. Reservations go through Naver, and one post that booked there received a highball as a welcome drink. No post tried booking by phone.
  • Of the 28 posts, one says it was a sponsored tasting, one says the writer paid, and the other 26 say nothing about payment. The August 2026 posts all repeat 'seafood brought in fresh every dawn'. The September–October posts repeat 'clams from Yeonan Pier the same day', 'a special sauce built on ten years of know-how' and 'one minute from Hongik Culture Park', in the same order. That looks like two rounds of commissioned posts. We treated these phrases as the restaurant's own claims and did not use them as evidence.
