Chunli Malatang Hongdae-jeom

춘리마라탕 홍대점 Malatang is the Sichuan-style numbing, spicy soup you build from a self-serve bar; Chunli is the chain's brand name, which none of the posts explain.

Compiled from 23 blog posts read in fullSources →

A malatang chain branch on the second floor of a building on Wausan-ro 27-gil, near Exit 9 of Hongik Univ. Station. You fill a bowl yourself with vegetables, noodles, fish balls and even beef or lamb, weigh it, pay at the kiosk, and staff bring the cooked bowl to your seat. Malatang is 1,900 won per 100 g (6,900 won minimum), mala xiangguo 3,000 won per 100 g (15,900 won minimum), and a small five-piece guobaorou that works for one person is 6,900 won. Bowls people actually paid for ran from 9,000 to 14,000 won. There is a solo counter along the window, and six posts say they came alone. We read 30 posts from April 2025 to October 2026; six were about other branches or other restaurants and were set aside. Of the remaining 24, 23 describe eating here (November 2025 to October 2026) and one only ordered delivery.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Meat goes on the same scale. Nine posts say they paid at the kiosk. Several mention a scale beside the ingredient fridge so you can check the weight as you go; one bowl came to 760 g, about 14,000 won including meat. Posts keep contrasting this with places that charge around 3,000 won per 100 g of meat.
  2. Many find it milder than the number suggests. Of ten posts that commented on heat, six said it was less spicy than expected and four reached no conclusion. Several compared level 2 to Shin Ramyun or milder. Posts say half levels such as 0.5 and 1.5 are available.
  3. Ten posts describe the guobaorou as crisp. One says even the small order came as five large pieces, enough for two; others mention the chewy glutinous-rice batter. One found the sauce slightly bland.
  4. Eight posts call it cheap, usually saying a full bowl cost less than they expected, around 10,000 won where other places charge 12,000 to 13,000. Nine posts mention a free soft drink for leaving a review.

Fourteen posts note it is on the second floor, reached by a ground-floor entrance and stairs; one says there is no elevator. Fourteen posts describe walking from the station, most often from Exit 9.

No one says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in — we don't know. One post does say the shop is upstairs with no elevator, only stairs.

Two posts say the restroom is inside the shop. Nobody says whether it is separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 24 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No post describes queuing. But one says the room was full about 30 minutes after a 5 pm weekday visit, and another found every seat taken on a weekday evening. Two posts say the food came out quickly.
  • Six posts came alone, two with family (a sibling, a child), one with a boyfriend. None clearly says they came with friends.
  • Nineteen posts give the same hours, 11:00 to 23:00 daily with last order at 22:30 (thirteen of them mention last order), but most copied this from map listings. None mentions a closing day; one says it is open every day.
  • Two price points disagree. Two posts say rice is free, four say it is charged separately (one gives 1,000 won). Most posts put the malatang minimum at 6,900 won; one June 2026 post says 9,900 won.
  • Nine posts list the phone number 02-334-8777, but none says whether you can book ahead; with a self-serve, kiosk setup it reads as walk-in.
  • Only one post discloses sponsorship. Yet several posts from around September 2026 repeat the same hashtag string, the review-event pitch and the 'meat is weighed too' point, and two share near-identical sentences. Some promotional writing is likely mixed in, so read the praise counts with that in mind.
